Scenes of Summer
We’re away on vacation this week and rather than boring you with photos of my boys all over Orlando, I’ve taken the opportunity to go through lots of random photos that make me think of summer. Here are just a few.

Pet of the week-Simba
Super Senior Simba here! I am a sweet and mellow fellow with an affectionate nature. I like to relax in sunny window perches and taking long cat naps. I am looking forward to enjoying my Golden Years by taking things slow, snacking often, playing freely and loving without abandon. How about you? I am looking for a family who is willing and able to love me for the rest of my days. Maybe this could be you? Then stop by and visit with me today! The Super Seniors program is supported in part by a grant from the Petco Foundation. Please check out our website for all available animals and to support us in our Gloucester Pride Stride Effort to raise funds for veterinary care. http://www.capeannanimalaid.org

EDITED W/EMAIL CONTACT INFO Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team Spring Peeper Field Trip Tonight at 9pm

EDITOR’S NOTE: To correspond with CAVPT, please email at cavpt@yahoo.comRick Roth writes from Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team
DID I MENTION WE NEED VOILUNTEERS FOR THIS WEEKEND?!?
And… there will be a field trip tonight. Almost all the salamanders have left the vernal pools and gone back to the woods. We might see a few. Peepers should be screaming. Meet at Walgreen’s parking lot on Main Street at 9pm. Look for my van, White Lightning.
My cell phone is still out of order. So… those of you that have been calling or texting that you are helping with these shows, please respond to this email. If you have not been calling or texting respond to this email anyway. We need you.
Okay… CAVPT basically has three components: protection of wetlands and wildlife habitat, education- this is where we teach people about the importance of wetlands and wildlife habitat, and fundraising, which is where we get the money to do this. So… this weekend we have apportunities to accomplish two of these goals, education and fundraising. But we can’t do it without volunteers. So far I have a total of one volunteer besides me for two shows. Please get in touch and tell me you want to volunteer this weekend.
TWO SHOWS AGAIN THIS WEEKEND, so… we will need lots of volunteers:
Saturday April 23, 2016 somewhere around noon or 1pm.
Snakes of New England and the World- one hour live animal presentation.
Earth Fest at Lynn Woods, Lynn MA- Pennybrook Rd. entrance.
Sunday April 24, 2016
Gloucester Pride Stride, Stage Fort Park, Gloucester
Pride Stride starts at noon. We will be there with some sort of live animal exhibit for the after walk party.
We need people to walk for CAVPT and people to help with the exhibit.
And… keep gathering those yard sale items for the Big Giant Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team/Kestrel Educatrional Adventures Yard Sale, Saturday May 28, 2016 9am-1pm, St. Peter’s Square in Gloucester. Rain date- Saturday June 4th.
Thanks, Rick

Joey: “Who in their right mind uses Red Mulch?”
This has been a burning GMG question for years now. Joey believes that anyone who uses red mulch is a sociopath, only sane people use black mulch. This is a photo of red and black mulch. Equal piles. I will be graphing the usage of the mulch over the next two weeks.
The problem is, this is right next to Fenway Park so we might find that only gardening sociopaths live in the Fenway area.

A Song About “How the Chickens got to the Other side of the Street”
Breaking News: Prince, Singular Music Star, Is Dead at 57
From New York Times:

Prince, the singularly flamboyant and prolific songwriter and performer whose decades of music transcended and remade genres like funk, rock and R&B, died on Thursday at his Paisley Park studio and estate in Minnesota, according to The Associated Press. He was 57.
Across a career of more than 35 years, Prince released 39 albums while being lauded not only for his songs, but their visual presentation both onstage and on camera. His 1984 film “Purple Rain” is widely considered one of the best and most influential music films ever, while its accompanying soundtrack spawned the No. 1 hits “Let’s Go Crazy” and “When Doves Cry.” He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
This is a major loss for Pop Music!!

HAPPY POEM IN YOUR POCKET DAY! T S Eliot Macavity The Mystery Cat
It’s a beauty for a poem day. What poem would you share? Along with an original poem from each kid, it’s tradition for us to read and carry Macavity: The Mystery Cat by T S Eliot. You can grab it below the GMG post fold (otherwise known as read more.) The T S Eliot Foundation bought his family’s Gloucester summer home in 2014 and I’m looking forward to hearing more about their plans. You can read more about Eliot in Gloucester on the HarborWalk and TS Eliot on GMG. Gloucester kids can try out their original poem as they ready for Sawyer Free Poetry Without Paper deadline.
When we visited Portland, ME, we walked by the house Henry Wadsworth Longfellow grew up in and that his grandfather built in 1785. You can’t help but walk by it several times as it’s on the beaten path. It was winter and the garden was closed else we would have stepped inside. Pretty sure my kids wouldn’t pick a Longfellow poem for today. For Longfellow in Gloucester.
