Often asked this question, I thought it would be helpful to post the answer again, especially as at this time of year when we see numerous numbers foraging in our marshes and along the shore. Both species of birds breed on Cape Ann and the coast of Massachusetts.
The first clue is size. Snowy Egrets are small, about the size of the Mallard Duck. Remember the letter S for small and snowy. Great Egrets are much larger, nearly identical in size to that of the Great Blue Heron.
Great Egrets have black feet and yellow bills. Snowy Egrets have reverse coloring, yellow feet and black bills.
Great Egrets stand very still while fishing. Snowy Egrets are wonderfully animated when foraging; they run quickly, walk determinedly, fly, and swish their feet around to stir up fish.
FYI….traffic is blocked from the rotary all the way over the bridge, past lobster land, past Sudbay, to the route 133 exit. Not moving. It looked like there was a tow truck at the very beginning of it all picking up a car. Slooooow Going!

“Sacred Nature: A Journey of Spirit – Conomo Point” is open at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center on July 7 through July 31,2016. The exhibit features an architectural installation of stunning photographic images and vibrant stained glass creations by visionary artist and artisan Hilary Harrison. The focal point is Conomo Point in Essex, Massachusetts, a place where the tidal waters of the Northern Atlantic Ocean meet the salty marshlands of Essex and Gloucester. Through the eyes of love a story emerges relating to nature. The journey begins with an invitation to come into the center to experience and contemplate the vast beauty of nature in its sacred expression.
Experience through the center of being … the Heart, resurrecting devotions to nature that are timeless, timely, and eternal. Stories permeate past, present, and future into one sacred and eternal moment through each untouched photograph. Honor the light, color, and experience of our being, sacred as music through the soul. Witness the beauty and sacredness of nature, the exhibition of photographs and stained glass reflects the sanctuary of Mother Nature brought alive by the artist.
“Our experience is reflected in nature, and nature is reflected within us. We are the thread that binds heaven and earth. ” Hilary Harrison

Each time I drive down Storrow Drive on my way to Fenway I think, I should really bring the boys in here to bike ride or paddle board along/on the Charles and make a day of it.
What better way to end a day of doing just that than taking in a free movie on the lawn at the Hatch Shell?
Disclaimer: Upon writing this post, I realized that there isn’t a movie scheduled for this week…probably because of the 4th of July festivities, but I kept it as a “pick” because you can plan ahead for the remaining weeks of summer.
