Downed phone lines and pounding surf from gale force winds

I saw two downed phone lines this morning, reported them and steered clear. I was taught those are the low ones.

Rusty & Ingrid Creative Company

I have meaning to get over to Magnolia to visit the studio of Rusty & Ingrid Creative Company since purchasing some of their artwork at City Hall Plaza’s “Boston Winter” back in December. I have yet to do so, but wanted to give a shout out to their amazing work now anyway.  If I’m being honest, I didn’t realize when I first started to look through their shop for some holiday gifts that Rusty & Ingrid actually calls Gloucester/Magnolia home.  I was poking around and picking out some prints when I overheard someone mention that their studio was located on Cape Ann.  How have I missed that?  Their artwork is gorgeous! Of course, and I should have know, upon conducting some research, both Donna and Joey have done numerous posts here on GMG about the phenomenal art that this talented duo creates…and their super cute kids.

While the boys were skating at #BostonWinter that afternoon I quickly purchased a print of Brant Point, Nantucket for my own home (that’s where we got engaged) and a print of Martha’s Vineyard for my mom…who visits there often.  I really wanted, however, to also buy the print of Fenway’s Green Monster and at least ten of the prints depicting many of my favorite haunts of both Gloucester and Rockport…including, of course, Thacher’s Island for Thatcher.  I also texted photos of a print of Lake Winnipesaukee to a friend who owns a home up there….and several of their ski destination prints to friends who frequent various mountains. I would totally decorate a beach cottage or ski lodge with a large series of these….if I had one to decorate.

If you haven’t seen their work, take a peek at their website in the link below.  I’m in love with their work…but also that they are local and make magic happen as a small, family run business.

Art teachers: they get the job done. Mary Sullivan and Brett Dunton at O’Maley Innovation Middle School

Mary Sullivan and Brett Dunton, fine artists and visual arts teachers at O’Maley Innovation Middle School, Gloucester, MA, act like art is the best subject anyone could dream of teaching. It’s evident that they’ve established an inspiring collaborative approach; they work together seamlessly and dazzle the students.  Their art rooms are just the way you’d dream they should look–ample rooms that look like art work is done there in a big way.

They are super resourceful and adept at re-purposing and re-inventing materials. They adhere to the ‘your trash is our treasure’ school of thought. Any donated supplies can be dropped off at room 130 before or after school.

4 Days left to get in on the action in Beverly

9WallisApprovedIt’s right down the road. Geographically, you could argue it’s the beginning of Cape Ann (see map) AND you can get there on a CATA bus… Beverly’s arts scene is about to get its first performance/event venue with flexible table seating from cabaret-style, to theatre-style to elegant dinner parties, called 9 Wallis.  Plus it’s a new venue for Gloucester artists to perform in — yes, Gloucester artists do cross the bridge from time-to-time.

We first told you about it in this post.  Here’s an update:

On Jan 12, the City of Beverly approved our liquor license and we’ve tentatively scheduled our Grand Opening Gala for Saturday, April 1.

Now you’ve got 4 days to help us get it open by pledging to our Kickstarter Campaign — and in return reap some wicked cool rewards like an invitation to our Grand Opening Gala!

psssst … all the cool kids will be there  ….

Best Air Freshener Ever

Two boys + lots of hockey + two dogs + wet trips home from the beach = need for a good car air freshener.

And, this is it.  First of all, I welcome any reason at all to visit Surfari.  Secondly, they’re super cute.  Third, they’re inexpensive.  And, fourth, they work crazy well!

Marijuana
What exactly is being proposed in Gloucester?
Where can people legally purchase marijuana and what credentials will one need to purchase it?
Will it be taxed?  On the State Level, Federal level, local level.
Besides jobs and real estate taxes, what other benefits to the City of Gloucester does having a dispensary have?
Are there laws for police officers when people are driving under the influence of marijuana and is there a test that police officers use?
Scott Memhard and Val Gilman filed ordinance to add Coyotes to existing ban on feeding Pigeons, Seagulls, terns and other Water Fowl downtown.

BOSTON STRONG, BOSTON BEAUTIFUL, BOSTON WOMEN’S MARCH!

boston-womens-march-gloucester-contingent-copyright-kim-smithboston-womens-march-jason-sarah-matilda-grow-copyright-kim-smithThe day started with a wonderful chance meet up with Gloucester students and the Grow and Abrams-Dowd family. Thanks to both families for their kindness; I so enjoyed the train ride into town with Bo, Sarah, and Jason. We were amongst the early birds arriving on the scene and it was tremendously exciting to see the preparations underway and the crowd swelling in number throughout the morning.boston-womens-march-1-copyright-kim-smith

The newest estimate is perhaps 175,000 attendees at an event where initially 25,000 were expected. The Boston Women’s March was one of over 600 peaceful rallies held around the world. Reportedly not a single arrest related to the march took place in Boston.boston-womens-march-21-representative-ann-margaret-ferrante-copyright-kim-smith

Representative Ann Margaret’s friendly face in the crowd.

People rallied for different reasons–for compassion and dignity towards others, equality and justice for all, for better stewardship of our environment, affordable healthcare, to protect women’s reproductive rights, for equal opportunity for the disabled–along with many other issues. The signs carried reflected all our concerns. For those who may be wondering why and to what end, I believe it is the coalescing of many movements into one and the beginning of a new world movement. Women are refusing to move backward and most assuredly, there is more to come.boston-womens-march-22-representative-ann-margaret-ferrante-copyright-kim-smithboston-womens-march-7-copyright-kim-smith

The official program began with music and dance performances, followed by speeches given by our fiercest advocates. The march was to follow however, it was delayed by several hours because the planned route was overflowing with marchers. Participants were not just from the immediate Boston neighborhoods, but had come from all around the state. The Boston Common and streets surrounding the Common had become a sea of people. Despite the human gridlock, kindness and patience prevailed.
