Greenbelt to Host Free Guided Walks in DeNormandie Woods

Events to take place April 12, May 21, and June 7

 

This spring, Greenbelt will host a series of free guided walks in the DeNormandie Woods Conservation Area, an environmentally rich 330-acre property that spans Gloucester and Manchester. The walks will take place on April 12, May 21, and June 7. Space is limited, pre-registration required.

 

In January, Greenbelt successfully completed its campaign to acquire and protect this valuable acreage, ensuring the land’s long-term preservation. This landmark acquisition safeguards vital natural habitats, an established trail network, and critical watershed lands, guaranteeing they remain protected from development for generations to come.

Part of a vast 1,400-acre expanse of protected land, DeNormandie boasts a breathtaking landscape of hardwood forests, rugged granite outcrops, rocky ledges, and a rich variety of terrains and elevations, all contributing to its exceptional natural beauty. Additionally, the property includes the headwaters of Cat Brook and Wolf Trap Brook, playing a vital role in preserving local water quality.

 

Since acquiring DeNormandie Woods, Greenbelt has been focused on mapping the land, marking trails, expanding a small parking area, and developing wayfinding signage. A special celebration event to commemorate its permanent protection is being planned for the fall.

Join John Herron for a brisk hike through the hidden trails of DeNormandie Woods. With his deep knowledge of the area, Herron will guide participants through the diverse landscapes of this stunning property.

May 21, 9:00am – 11:00am

Take a step back in time on a guided walk through DeNormandie Woods, where our guide will share fascinating stories about the land’s rich history and the evolution of its landscape.

 

> Birding Stroll at DeNormandie Woods

June 7, 9:00am – 11:00am

Join expert birder Laura Vehring for a relaxing stroll through DeNormandie, where participants will observe both seasonal and resident birds while learning about their habitats and behaviors along the way.

For over two decades, Rose has held various roles in the education system, including administrative assistant, school counselor, and assistant principal. She now serves as principal and Director of Professional Development, SEL, and Equity of a public school.  Rose has mentored and led many conferences that guide new administrators, teachers, support staff, students, and families.She currently lives in Rockport, Massachusetts, with her husband and two children.

We LOVE going to Bravo by the Sea on Beach St in Manchester especially on Mondays when the Detroit style pizza is available. The small seating area is comfortable with easy parking. The service is thorough and friendly. And as if all that wasn’t enough, the Detroit style pizza is outstanding!

Maritime Gloucester WalkAbout

I took a cue from Joey’s recent post about the beauty along our harbor behind Maritime Gloucester on the Harbor Loop and went down there myself. I visit that area frequently and there’s always something beautiful to share. On this morning, there was work being done (no doubt volunteers).
