Frrrrrrozen Fenway

With the temperatures in the low 20s, I’d say Frozen Fenway is an appropriate name!

A friend and I took some avid little hockey players to check out “the big kids” on the ice. In this case, those big kids were the Boston University and UMASS teams.

The temperatures were no joke, but it was great to get in there for a bit. With some competitive hockey, cocoa, and even curling the boys had a great time.  A couple of the boys had to get back to Cape Ann for their own hockey games so we didn’t stay for the double header and I couldn’t help but think how much colder it must have been for the 5:00 Boston College vs. Providence game at the end of the day.  There isn’t enough “Bailey’s in the coffee” to make that sound tempting.

A thank you note from TBT Post

Richard from TBT Post sent this email out on Sunday.  Another reason we love our local stores.  Thank you Richard.  As I am typing this, have the wonderful warm socks that TBT Post sell on.

This Sunday morning I shoveled my way out of my house in Rockland Mass to enjoy my adventurous drive north to our wonderful City of Gloucester Mass.

When I arrived in the City of Gloucester off of RTE 128 I could only say one word. WOW!!!!

The streets and sidewalks were cleaned as if we didn’t even have our first blizzard of the year.

I was able to walk right into the TBT Post Store and open it for customers as if it was a summer day. Despite the foot and a half of snow.

 I am just speechless.

The only words I can manage to say at this time are “Thank You Gloucester and to everyone involved”

It was great to see that Short and Main had a nice crowd for their Sunday Brunch today.

Premier Imprints, The Olive Oil Company and other stores where open ready for  business.

Café Sicilia who is always open, was open with my favorite morning cup of hot chocolate and sweets that we all love.

Café Sicilia has the best cup of Hot Chocolate for the worst blizzard mother nature can ever come up with.

Thank you  to the City of Gloucester and everyone who works so hard making Gloucester a fun destination all year round.

TBT Post is so proud and we feel so fortunate to be a part of the unlimited positive energy in the City of Gloucester Massachusetts.

Note: TBT Post did pass the positive energy forward by shoveling out some of the cross walks.

A Million Thanks to The Wonderful City of Gloucester Ma!!!!

ARTICLE IN THE LONDON SUNDAY TIMES FEATURING CAPE ANN: Seafood and Dunes: New England’s Lesser-known Cape

Salt hits the back of my throat. As I step out of my car, I suck deeper on the icy sea air. Freezing waves crash below me as I gaze out towards the Atlantic from Gloucester, an old fishing settlement on the New England coast, while the sun slowly drops below the horizon.

In the distance is the glimmer of the Eastern Point lighthouse, the last sight of home for many Gloucester fishermen before they sailed into the vastness of the ocean. Dotted around the harbour are small wooden houses from which fishermen’s wives would look anxiously into the bay.

Fishing has run thick in the blood of Gloucester since English settlers arrived in 1623. The city — the oldest seaport in America — is on Cape Ann, which juts into the Atlantic just north of Boston. Across the Cape, stretched over some of the most beautiful coastline in America, are working fishing towns, beaches of white sand, marshes, old colonial buildings and, of course, bucket loads of fresh seafood.

In the winter, with the fishermen at rest, the pace of life slows to match the region’s calm, understated beauty. This is perhaps the reason that Manchester by the Sea, the brooding drama starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams, was filmed here in the winter months. Although the movie (most of which was filmed in Gloucester) follows the lives of a working-class family, Manchester-by-the-Sea itself, which lies to the west of Gloucester, is unabashedly wealthy. Just off the main road are $14 million mansions with great sea views.

When we Brits think of the Massachusetts coastline, we think of the dreamy panoramas of Cape Cod. Indeed, most Bostonites head south to the sand dunes and salty air whenever they take a break from the city. If Cape Cod and its quaint little villages possess a special kind of serene beauty, so does the lesser-known Cape Ann. And with fewer tourists, Cape Ann — unlike Cape Cod — stays in character.

After a year of monthly programming by the libraries and community partners, the Cape Ann Reads original picture book contest is in full swing and has moved into the jury processing stage. The contest is hosted by the 4 public libraries of Cape Ann. They will publish the first edition printing for one book from entries that were submitted by December 15, 2016. The jury selection panel includes representatives from each of the public libraries: Justine Vitale Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Public Library; Carol Bender, Children’s and Teen Librarian,  Rockport Public Library; Kate Strong Stadt, Head of Youth Services, Manchester-By-The-Sea Public Library; Anne Cowman, Young Adult Librarian, Manchester-By-The-Sea Public Library; and April Wanner, Assistant Librarian at the TOHP Burnham Library, Essex. Joining these talented library participants are three artists and award winning children’s picture book authors and illustrators: Pat Lowery Collins; Giles Laroche; and Anna Vojtech.  Bob Ritchie proprietor of Dogtown Book Shop will provide another crucial area of book world expertise.  Cape Ann Reads is grateful for their time and considerable talents to help the participants and the process. A second jury of children will select their favorites and is chaired by Liza Browning from the Cape Ann Museum, a Cape Ann Reads partner.

About the Cape Ann creates for Cape Ann Reads Children’s Picture Book Contest:
The 4 public libraries hosted a one of a kind call for entry seeking new and original children’s picture books showcasing local artists and writers.

Cape Ann residents of all ages, students attending school on Cape Ann, and people who work on Cape Ann were invited to create part or all of a picture book for consideration to be published, and to submit their entries by December 15th, 2016. A first edition printing of one of these submissions will be published in 2017 by the 4 public libraries and with the support of various sponsors. The copyright is timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of a Caldecott award for the children’s book, “Little House”, by Virginia Lee Burton, eminent Gloucester artist, author and illustrator.
