2017 Sidewalk Bazaar

  •   Danielle Capalbo asked me to post her photos and appreciation to GMG for helping promote Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar
  • Billy Goulart, owner of Nana’s Fried Dough in Gloucester, wiped off a “gift” our seagull friends left on the electric BMWs that Lyon-Waugh Auto Group and BMW of Peabody had donated to the Gloucester Police Department.  The two vehicles were on display at the Sidewalk Bazaar to promote the use of green energy.
  • The B-Fit Team of the Bruins Foundation was a popular stop for our young athletes!  The B-Fit team is a community outreach program whose primary objective is to increase the overall wellness of the New England community through fitness and dietary education.
  • Another popular stop is the puppet show.
  • The DPW, Fire Department and the Police were all hard at work supporting the Bazaar before and during the 3-day event.  A visitor dropped something down a drain-hole, and the DPW was called on to help retrieve it.

Thanks to our sponsors: The Cape Ann Savings Bank, The Randazza Group, Horvitz & Frisch and Lahey Health.

Key volunteers who helped out at the event: John Orlando with the Harborview Inn, Patty Gates with Cape Ann Olive Oil and Premier Imprints,  Elizabeth Carey with Discover Gloucester, Melissa Cox, Ward II Councilor,  Elliott Margolis, Josiah Fisk with More Carrot, Michaela DiPersia, and Kathleen Adams.  Thanks also go to Brass Monkey and Bank Gloucester for the use of their parking lot.  The Clean Team from the Cape Ann YMCA did an awesome job keeping Main Street clean throughout the event!

Many thanks to GMG for helping with getting the word out!

Pet of the Week Hooper

Hi! My name is Hooper and I am what you call a friendly feral. Although I’ve lived outdoors for part of my life I’ve become very fond of humans and now am looking for my own to share their home with me. Because I’m so friendly the folks here don’t think I’ll have a hard time transitioning to the indoor life .I like warm cozy beds, snacks to share and a sunny spot to lounge in. I don’t mind a good scratching behind my ear from time to time. If your into helping out with second chances stop in and meet me and maybe I’ll be the lucky one ! To see all of the available cats and dogs at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter please go to our website: capeannanimalaid.org.

Painted Lady Butterfly Irruption
Plover Update

THE DANCE OF COLOR AND LIGHT

Have you noticed the beautiful Painted Lady Butterfly flitting about your garden, in the meadows, along roadways, and even at the beach? I think we are having a Painted Lady irruption. The wave of Painted Ladies began appearing in large numbers this past spring, with reports of a dramatic increase in sightings in the midwest.

Seeing Double

The Painted Lady is the most successful butterfly in the world. It lives some part of the year on every continent except South America, where it is rare or absent. Despite the fact that the Painted Lady is the most widely distributed butterfly, not a great deal is known about its migration. In North America the annual spring migration is thought to originate in the northwestern region of Mexico, where they can be found all year round. Heavy rains in late winter in that region trigger an explosion of northward migrating Painted Ladies that establish the spring brood.

I watched this little torn and tattered Painted Lady fly south over the Essex River, from Crane’s Beach to Wingaersheek Beach. She rested on a rock briefly, and then headed to the wildflowers in the dunes.

On Friday, the seas were choppy and the water was warm

These days of summer when you can body surf for hours in the water are the best. It makes you feel like a kid.
