Guess who is coming to the North Shore Arts Association September, 22nd 2 – 4 Yes…It’s BRIAN RUTENBERG Brian Rutenburg is… Widely considered to be one of the finest American painters of his generation, Brian Rutenberg has spent forty years honing a distinctive method of compressing the rich color and form of his native coastal South Carolina into complex landscape paintings that imbue material reality with a deep sense of place. He is a Fulbright Scholar, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow, a Basil Alkazzi USA Award recipient, an Irish Museum of Modern Art visiting artist program participant, and has had over two hundred exhibition throughout North America. Rutenberg’s paintings are included in such museum collections as Yale University Art Gallery, The Butler Institute of American Art, Bronx Museum of Art, Peabody Essex Museum of Art, Greenville County Museum of Art, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, South Carolina State Museum, and many others. His popular YouTube videos “Brian Rutenberg Studio Visits” are viewed daily by people all over the world. Radius Books published a full color monograph in 2008. Jude Abbe Pre-Demo Studio Showroom Pop Up Show Aug. 27- Sept. 1 Demonstration September 1 (2pm) Jude Abbe – Oil Impressionist – Plein Air Painter. Jude studied with Roger Curtis for several years, more recently working with many others, including Charles Movalli, Mary Minifie, David Curtis, Christopher Zhang, Jonatan McPhillips and T.M. Nicholas, to name a few. Using the impressionist palette, she paints, landscapes, portraits and occasionally still life. Her work has been exhibited in shows and galleries throughout New England and New York. Paul Ciaramitaro Pre-Demo Studio Showroom Pop Up Show September 3 – 7 Demonstration September 7 (2pm) How to make something out of nothing! Paul Ciaramitaro, a lifelong resident of Cape Ann, began his love of art as a child. Over the years, he has been influenced by the Renaissance artists as well as Aldro Hibbard, Emile Gruppe, and especially Charles Movalli. In the 1970’s, Paul became a student of Movalli’s and was deeply inspired by him. He told Paul “If you learn something from every painting you do, you will become an artist”. In between his grueling hours as a commercial fisherman and dockworker, Paul sketched and painted in his spare time and worked hard to glean all that he could from his mentors. His commitment and talent led him to become a well-established and accomplished Cape Ann artist. His paintings have won many awards and his work can be found in both private and corporate collections, as well as in prestigious galleries and museums such as the Cape Ann Museum. Over the past several decades, Paul has taught numerous classes and workshops which have been widely attended, and he has served as a juror for many exhibition. He is a juried artist member of both the North Shore Arts Association and The Rockport Art Association & Museum. When asked about being an artist Paul says, “I’m serious about it. CAPE ANN ARTS ALIVE REVIEW, WITH DAISY NELL AND STUDENTS PERFORMING “HEARTBEAT FROM THE SEA” AT THE SHALIN LIU

Thank you to all the generous people and organizations who added so much to the CAAA program this year.

Her Honor, Sefatia Romeo Theken, Mayor wears a stole from the Mayor of Gloucester, England as she greets us in her office at City Hall! We were fortunate to visit when such a special dignitary was in town, and she invited us to visit “the other Gloucester.” As always, Sefatia was a wonderful host.

Morgan Faulds Pike, Sculptor, gave us not only the history of her own Fishermen’s Wives Monument and the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association but also the stories of Anna Hyatt Huntington’s “Joan of Arc,” Leonard Craske’s “Man at the Wheel” and Walker Hancock’s “Triton.”

Maggie Rosa, whose civic passion helped us to save City Hall and its iconic tower, took us up to see the bell which rings the hours in the city. The sight of Gloucester from this vantage is breathtaking. On the way up, Maggie introduced us to the citizen portraits of A. Piatt Andrew, Charles Olson, John Hayes Hammond, and Clarence Birdseye.

Daisy Nell, folk singer/sailor extraordinaire, taught us the song she wrote for all Cape Ann children to know: “A Heartbeat from the Ocean.” Daisy accompanied us in our performance at the Shalin Liu.

Artist and Art Historian, Susan Erony, showed us the beautiful Charles Allen Winter murals at City Hall and gave us the background of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal and the Works Project Administration (WPA) which supported the artists during the post-Depression era.

Sarah Flanagan, Education Coordinator at the Cape Ann Museum, was our guide to the Museum’s holdings regarding maritime Gloucester, with special attention to the late 19th c. diorama, the Fresnel lens, and the Native American artifacts.

ON SALE AT GLOUCESTER HIGH SCHOOL STARTING WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29
CATA Student Bus Passes are scheduled to be sold in the Gloucester High  School Atrium on Wednesday, August 29, Thursday, August 30 and Friday, August 31 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.; Tuesday,  September 4 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and  Wednesday, September 5; Thursday, September 6; and Friday, September 7 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Gloucester High School Atrium. Student Passes will not be available for purchase at the CATA office until  September 10

The Pass Plus, Unlimited Semester (Fall or Spring) Pass and Unlimited Annual Pass will be on sale. The Unlimited Semester (Fall or Spring) Pass and Unlimited Annual Pass are photo IDs and the student must be present at the time of purchase. The cost for the Unlimited Annual Pass is $200.00; the cost for theUnlimited Semester (Fall or Spring) Pass  is $100.00 and the cost for the Pass Plus is $25.00. ALVIN FOSTER AND SOUL ECLECTIC BAND BRING THE BEAT OF MOTOWN AND SOUL MUSIC TO LAST GLOUCESTER MEETINGHOUSE CONCERT, SEPTEMBER 7

Alvin Foster, vocalist, music director, songwriter and teacher, and his band Soul Eclectic, will perform at the final free Gloucester Meetinghouse Summer Concert Series Friday, September 7, 6 – 9 pm, at the corner of Church and Middle Street.

Boston-based, Alvin Foster found his passion in music through immersion in Hip-Hop, and later, Soul and Jazz. He counts Miles Davis, James Brown, Lou Rawls and Aretha Franklin as profound musical influences. Alvin has been performing in the Boston area for 10 years. He is currently Executive Director for SaveOurSelves Productions, a multi-faceted musical platform producing live concerts, studio recordings, publications and educational clinics. Alvin is also a faculty member of his alma mater, Berklee College of Music.

Alvin and his band Soul Eclectic will take you back in time to the 60s, 70s and 80s. As he said, “We will play soul music underpinning Black people’s courage to be happy and celebrate life, love, spirituality and growth in the face of racism.” The band celebrates and features artists that grew up alongside Motown. Enjoy the rhythm and mojo of Alvin Foster on vocals, Tricia Reed on vocals, Oscar Brown III on guitar, Briana Washington on keyboard, Min Jae Yim on bass, and Jarrell Campbell on drums.

The concert is free. As with all of Gloucester Meetinghouse Green’s concerts, the audience is encouraged to make free-will donations. The last concert is dedicated to the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation, founded in 2015. The mission of the Meetinghouse Restoration Project is to complete a historically informed but fully functional building restoration, both to preserve this important landmark and to be a cultural gathering place for all of Gloucester and Cape Ann.

Fresh, all-natural food is provided by The Common Crow. In case of inclement weather the concert will be held inside the Meetinghouse. Parking is available on Meetinghouse Green, nearby lots, and at St. Peter’s Square.

The final dollar amount raised from this year’s Bluefin Blowout for the Alzheimer’s Association was announced last night at a check presentation evening at the Beauport Hotel.

In all, the 7th Annual Bluefin Blowout raised an incredible $155,000 to help End Alzheimer’s. Phenomenal people doing amazing things.
