Body Cast, by Azita Moradkhani
Azita Moradkhani was born in Tehran where she was exposed to Persian art and culture as well as Iranian politics, and that double exposure increased her sensitivity to the dynamics of vulnerability and violence that she explores in her work and art-making process. She received her BFA from Tehran University of Art and both her MA in Art Education and her MFA in drawing, painting & sculpture from Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts & Tufts University. The female body, and its exposure to different social norms, is central to Moradkhani’s work. Through her drawings and body castings, she is examining displacement as an unnatural state we experience when we find ourselves insecure in our own body.

For Immediate Release:
New Generations of Cape Ann Art: Leon Doucette and Peter Herbert ART@the Icehouse Exhibit Opening

New works by Gloucester painters Peter Herbert and Leon Doucette are featured in a special upcoming Artist Exhibition hosted at the Art@the Icehouse gallery in Gloucester’s “Fort” neighborhood.
“New Generations of Cape Ann Art” opens with an Opening Reception at 5 pm Saturday, October 13, 2018. ART@the Icehouse Gallery is located above Cape Pond Ice Company, Fort Wharf, 104 Commercial Street, Gloucester, MA.
Leon Doucette is a nationally recognized young portraitist and oil painter, who has won recent awards of the Guild of Boston Artists, and an international competition by the American Portrait Society in Washington, DC. Leon received his BFA from the New Hampshire Institute of Art, and serves on the Cape Ann Museum curatorial staff. Leon’s paintings are characterized by soft tonal modeling, diligent brushwork, and often solemn atmosphere.
Peter Herbert most recently exhibited his abstract landscapes at The Jane Deering Gallery and in Annisquam, and will share a new series of land and seascapes examining play of light and color on horizons, and fresh images of Gloucester harbor and Cape Pond Ice’s wharf and Icehouse. Peter studied at the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Students League of New York, with Brooklyn realist Andrew Reiss, as well as master painter David Levine, and locally under mentorships of Erma Wheeler and Gordon Goetemann.
Preparing together for this ART@the Icehouse exhibit at Gloucester’s iconic Cape Pond Ice, Peter and Leon have explored fresh, complementary synergy in their new work and color palette.
Saturday’s 5pm, October 13th Artist Reception is free and open to the public. This special exhibit extends through Sunday, November 4th, with hours Monday – Friday from 9 am – 5 pm, Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm, and Sundays from 11 am – 3 pm, and by appointment.

Couples from South Dakota.  We had a great conversation about the contrast of where we live.

I also directed them to the Eastern Point Light House.  The couple on the left where originally from the west coast but now operate  Sunshine Valley Gardens in Piedmont South Dakota.  (see link below)

Fire Department Housekeeping

I wondered why the fire trucks were gathering in the Stage Fort Park lot, so I asked and was told they were checking the hoses. I guess it’s one of those regular maintenance jobs that has to be done on a regular basis.  Most of us don’t give such tasks a second thought, but the reliability of the hoses is critical to the success of the department’s mission. Thanks guys!

HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FEMALE AND MALE MONARCH BUTTERFLY

A question often asked, “how can you tell it’s a male or female Monarch Butterfly?”

Female (left) and male Monarch (right)

The difference is easy to see when you are looking at the upper side of the butterfly’s wings. On the hind wings of the male Monarch are two black dots, one dot on each hind wing. These dots are actually pockets filled with pheromones, or “love dust.” When the male and female meet, he sprinkles his love dust, and if she is receptive, the pair will join abdomen to abdomen, where they stayed coupled together for several hours.

You can also see the difference by comparing wing veination. The females wing veins are thicker and smokier, the male’s wing veins are thinner.

During the summer breeding months, you can often tell the difference by behavior, especially when near a patch of milkweed. The males vigorously fly about looking for females, whereas the females are more slowly flitting and hovering around the foliage, looking for places on which to oviposit her eggs. Their behavior during the fall migration is such that both male and female are intently drinking nectar, building their lipid reserves for the long journey south.

Next time you see a Monarch in your garden, have a look and see if you can tell whether male or female.
