Ron Gilson’s patriotic tribute to his friend, Joe Mondello at the dory shop
A spectator packed room and observation deck at Geno’s Dory Shop, greeted Ron and Joan Gilson on this sunny, mild mid-winter afternoon for Ron’s patriotic tribute to his friend, Joe Mondello. It was to the sound of bag pipes, guitars, concertina, and mandolin, playing light, spirited music, Ron delivered his tribute to his longtime boyhood friend, Joe Mondello, on the occasion of Joe’s 93rd year.
Joe Mondello, a lifelong Gloucester cobbler, still working daily, is a proud U.S. Navy WW II veteran. Surrounded by his family and friends, he stood at attention and returned Gilson’s respectful salute while the audience sang Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America”.
Following this tribute, Mondello, “the Dog Hill legend”, and his guests shared a delicious cake, frosted with the patriotic colors of red, white and blue, as the crowd congratulated Mondello and “the band played on”!

CELEBRATING CAPE ANN ANIMAL AID!!!
Cape Ann Animal Aid is just one of the many nonprofits on Cape Ann that is eligible to receive grants given yearly by the Cape Ann Community Foundation. In the last two years the Foundation has awarded $24,000 in grant to Cape Ann Nonprofits. This year they will award another $15,000. This all happens because you show your love for Cape Ann and order a Cape Ann License Plate at Lovecapeann.com. The License Plate funds the Cape Ann Community Foundation.
My own cat, Bogey is a 2007 rescue from Cape Ann Animal Aid. The work they do mean so much to the animals and the people who rescue them.

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) 2019 grant recipients were announced this month. Poetry was competitive.
- For the NEA 2019 Artworks – 972 of 1605 eligible grants were funded (ranging from $10,000-$100,00 totaling more than $25 million)
- For the NEA 2019 Challenge America – 138 of 221 eligible applications to receive $10,000 each for a total of $1.38 million
- For the NEA 2019 Creative Writing Fellowships in poetry– 35 of 1700 eligible applicants (none having won an NEA fellowship before) to receive $25,000 each. “Visit the Arts Endowment’s Literature Fellowships webpage to read excerpts by and features on past Creative Writing Fellows and recipients of Literature Fellowships for translation projects.”

I recently attended one of the Beauport Hotel’s Fireside Chats featuring Lise Breen discussing Gloucester’s ties and history with slave trade. It was informative and interesting, especially since I learned there are additional Fireside Chats scheduled. Jeanne Hennessey, Director of Communications for the Beauport was hostess and let us know the upcoming dates and topics:

Cat Cavallini Shares Some Kitesurfing Photos From Good Harbor
I’m no Kim Smith that’s for sure, but had to send you pics, cuz I think you love all things GH too. the wind surfers were like watches dances in the clouds! It was so windy, freeze rain and gorgeous waves for them when I got to GH around 10 30 this morning.
Over sixty years ago my parents came over here from avellino Italy and our combined next door started taking us to Good Harbor every Sunday. So I’ve been going there since I could crawl 61 years ago!
Of course passed on the tradition taking my sons there too. last May we rested my oldest son Joshs ashes into the ocean from salt island where I will join him someday too. He was my twice a week Gloucester kayak buddy. Now my brother and I come up here to kayak and even though we live out Worcester way we love Glosta hope to live here someday, well I’m still alive that is, haha!
This Christmas you actually delivered a GMG calendar gift for me to my friend Hilda’s house. She had just moved to magnolia and was so thrilled that Joey actually dropped off the calendar in person! So ya, we’re all big fans.

THREE GRACES – BEAUTIFUL YOUNG SWANS AT NILES POND!
A beautiful trio of young Mute Swans spent the day at Niles Pond foraging on pond vegetation and enjoying fresh water. When the fresh water ponds thaw, we see our local swans take a break from their salty harbor refuges. The Three Graces spent the entire day eating nearly nonstop, which suggests they are very hungry.
I believe the three young swans are not quite one year old. Their bills are pale, and brown first-molt feathers mix with incoming white feathers. It’s their first winter so if you see the young swans, please be kind.
Mr. Swan, too, has been enjoying the fresh water at Henry’s Pond. He’s so territorial that I hope he stays over in Rockport for a bit so the Three Graces can fortify at Niles.
