“In Search of Orcas” Day #1

We woke up at 3:00 a.m. yesterday morning to begin Thatcher’s birthday trip by catching a 6:00 am flight on Alaska Air. With a 6 hour flight to Seattle, a pit stop at the car rental company (where they upgraded us to a sweet Jeep at no cost for the birthday boy), a ferry ride from Mukilteo to Whidbey Island, and then a BEAUTIFUL ride up the length of the island…with some stops at Deception Pass, the Cap Sante Marina, and the seaport town of Anacortes…. our vacation has already been amazing.  I surprised Thatch with a trip to the San Juan Islands north of Seattle as a birthday gift back in May….for lots of different reasons (which you can read about here if you’re so inclined).  We’ve been eagerly anticipating yesterday ever since!

I am aware that there is a chance that we could actually NOT encounter orcas this week despite looking long and hard for a vacation spot with best likelihood…and while I’ll secretly be devastated….Thatch has already made it all ok by saying, “this vacation has already been so special.” I’ve already seen a side of him that I don’t always get to see at home as we race from rink to rink, lament about homework and laundry, and deal with the day to day blur of activities.  The two of us need this time together.

So, while the motivation for booking this special trip was to see orca whales, I’m positive there will be many other gifts along the way.

As I type this he’s looking out our balcony to the islands in the distance with binoculars trying to find whales. Tomorrow (or “today” ….as you’re reading it) we’re off for four days in Friday Harbor….where the real games begin.  Fingers crossed.

WARM WATER ALERT!

Heads up, the ocean water temperature is delightfully warm!

Even at Good Harbor the water is warm. I just returned from a late day swim (6:45) and the beach is not nearly as crowded as earlier in the day.

Love Summer

MYSTERY CHICK AT GOOD HARBOR BEACH THIS MORNING

There were not one, not two, not three, but four chicks feeding together at the wrack line at day break this morning. The mystery chick appears to be about the same age as our brood, exhibiting all the same behaviors, although it is not a Piping Plover fledgling. I think it is a Semipalmated Plover fledgling.

The chick was sopping, soaking wet and very disheveled, but feeding as vigorously as our family finding Good Harbor Beach ants, beetles, mollusks, and sea worms to be excellent breakfast fare.

When Papa Plover voiced danger warnings, the little visitor listened as attentively as did our brood of three. At one point Papa ran towards him, I thought to scare him away, but Papa was really after the Bachelor and kept on charging.

How could such a little fledgling fly from their northern breeding grounds at such an early age I wonder. He was so drenched, he appeared to have “washed” ashore, not flown. Semipalmated Plovers breed as far south as Newfoundland so perhaps he only traveled across the Gulf of Maine.

Evocative light at daybreak this morning.

CHILDREN’S BUTTERFLY GARDENING WORKSHOP AT PHILIPS ANDOVER CHILDREN’S CAMPUS

Snapshots from a butterfly gardening workshop that I recently participated in at Philips Andover Children’s Campus. This wonderful program was coordinated with the Andover Gardening Club and Andover Memorial Hall Library. Many thanks to SHED educator Julie for inviting me to participate and for taking such great care of Charlotte while I worked with the kids!

FRIEND ERIC HUTCHINS’S LUSH MILKWEED PATCH

My friend Eric Hutchins sent along this snapshot of his wonderfully lush patch of Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca). He thought I would like to see how beautifully his milkweed has grown from seeds distributed at our milkweed sale several years ago. Thanks so much to Eric, love, love seeing this!

Plant for the pollinators and they will come 🙂

Music on the Meetinghouse Green

CLASSIC ROCK AND ROLL BY LIVIN’ ON LUCK
July 12 free concert of rock will inspire you to get up and dance on Meetinghouse Green

North Shore based group Livin’ on Luck plays the second free Friday evening concert of the Music on Meetinghouse Green’s 2019 season, at the corner of Church and Middle Streets, on July 12, 2019, 6:00 P.M. – 8:30 P.M.

Rockport-based vocalist Ann O’Donnell together with North Shore locals Josh Bevins (bass), Tom Bull (drums), Bobby Cedrone (guitar and vocals), and Tom O’Donnell (guitar and vocals) have a combined century of rock experience, while playing together as a band for fifteen years. All of the band members began their musical journeys in garage bands. They will play a choice mix of tunes from the seventies, eighties and nineties. Classic rock by Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, the Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones and Moody Blues and other greats will take you on a musical trip down memory lane. “Love, relationships and nature are big themes of our songs,” said Ann O’Donnell. “We combine ‘torch songs’ which are slow and soulful with eurythmic and dancing songs. We have fun, and the audience loves our choice of songs.”

Each week Music on Meetinghouse Green partners with a different non-profit organization to raise awareness for the services they provide to the local community. At the July 12 concert, the audience is invited to contribute to a freewill donation for Backyard Growers, a grassroots non-profit organization that teaches people to grow their own food. Classic Cooks will provide tasty food for concert-goers.

The Gloucester Meetinghouse, home of the Unitarian Universalist Church, is located at the corner of Church and Middle Streets. The concert is handicapped accessible. Event parking is available on the green and at additional parking lots nearby in the Historic District. Folding chairs will be provided or bring your own beach chair or blanket. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside the Meetinghouse.
