Blackburn Challenge Race Saturday July 13th

Blackburn Challenge Race Saturday July 13th

Hello All Rowers,

This Saturday July 13th is the annual Blackburn Challenge Race around Cape Ann.  This is a 22 plus mile rowing race.  We will be having four of the IDRC race boats and two practice boat in the event.  The event starts at 8 AM in the Annisquam river.  The racers travel up the river towards the Ipswich bay, around Halibut Point, through Straitsmouth, along long and good harbor beaches, past eastern point light house and finishes at the Greasy Pole at Pavilion beach.  If you have free time make your way to the water around Cape Ann to cheer on our racers.
With this said the four race boats and two practice boats will not be available Saturday until after 2 pm.  Some of the race boats will be moved Friday afternoon.  If there is a race boat at the dock in the morning please do not take it for a row.  Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause anyone.  Thank you very much for your cooperation on this day.
Best of Luck to the racers

July 12 Meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club: How do Stars and Planets Form?

Michael Deneen's avatarCape Ann Community

This month we’re fortunate to have Catherine Zucker of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics as our guest speaker. Catherine will show us how we have begun to derive accurate distance measurements to large, star-forming molecular clouds in the Milky Way galaxy, and what that means for astronomy.

Why go to all this trouble? Obtaining accurate distance measurements to molecular clouds is important for understanding the star and planet formation process. The advent of large photometric surveys and theGaiamission offer an unprecedented opportunity to derive the distances and properties of hundreds of millions of stars, as well as the molecular clouds between them.

Without resorting to scary math, Catherine will explain how we have combined these data with statistical methods to create a new 3D map of molecular clouds in the solar neighborhood (the nearest 10,000 lightyears). As it turns out, these phenomena are surprisingly interrelated — using interactive visualization software…

ROMANTIC CANDID MOMENT OF YOUNG COUPLE BECOMING ENGAGED AT GOOD HARBOR BEACH

On my way to PiPl monitoring, I stopped to take a few photos of the rising sun. A couple were in my frame and I thought how striking a pose silhouetted with the sun coming up behind the two. It quickly became apparent that the man was proposing!

After some time had gone by (because I didn’t want to barge in on their moment), I asked if they would like the photos and they said yes. We shared email information. At this point they would like to remain nameless, but you can see from the silhouetted moment just how sweet to happen upon this scene.

Popping the question

We heard you when you told us we’d outgrown the venue in Newburyport. So, we’re excited to share that Riverfest is moving to a new, larger venue — beautiful Stage Fort Park, Gloucester, overlooking Gloucester Harbor.

And we’ve also moved the event up one week from its traditional Labor Day weekend. The event will be held Saturday, August 24, 2019, 12-6pm.

But something that definitely hasn’t changed — Riverfest will continue to be free and open to the public, as it’s always been.

We’re stoked about the future for this popular, annual event, and we hope you’ll join us on August 24th for an awesome day of live music and great vibes!
