From the tiniest pinhead-sized eggs hatched quarter-inch caterpillars. A month later and these gorgeous Cecropia Moth caterpillars (30!) are approximately five to six inches in length and 3/4 of an inch in diameter.
Halibut Point Quarry was transformed in late July by the Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre who bedazzled the landscape in saffron and mustard yellow costumes and took center stage for a moment in time. Perched like birds on the quarry cliffs, first hovering, then gliding and cascading, the dancers interfaced with the seagulls in brilliant choreographic tandem! Windhover Performing Arts Center has produced eight quarry dances so far, and each one is unique and site-specific, utilizing the characteristics of each particular quarry landscape. All of us who were present at a performance witnessed the art of dance and music enlivened by nature… a perfect trio!

I noticed this struggling bird on the rocks off the back shore a few days ago. I believe it’s a Northern Gannet. I had seen them only out to sea previously so I was kind of excited to see one up a bit closer. But it appeared to be injured so I reported it to Jodi Swenson at Cape Ann Wildlife then was referred to City of Gloucester Animal Control (978-281-9746). I hope the beautiful bird is better by now.
***PS: Not long after I scheduled this post, our own Kim Smith re-posted information she had provided in 2017 regarding a mysterious disease affecting the Northern Gannets. See her post for more info! Great minds and all that……***

We’ve decided to switch things up at Seaport Grille this summer with a little bit of help from our neighbors at the famous Virgilio’s Bakery!
Beginning in 1961, three generations of Virgilio family members have owned and operated their bakery located here in Gloucester. Their speciality baked breads and rolls are made fresh daily and delivered to restaurants and supermarkets throughout Cape Ann. According to Virgilio’s, “the bread makes the sandwich,” and at here Seaport Grille we couldn’t agree more.
Some of our favorite menu items that have benefited from the fluffy yet crisp and perfectly toasted Virgilio bun include our Gloucester Haddock Sandwich, our Sully’s Bacon Cheeseburger and our popular and delicious Lobster BLT.
Join us for #summeratseaport to indulge in a taste of our Gloucester Haddock Sandwich made with fresh haddock and home-made tarter sauce, our Sully’s Bacon Cheeseburger filled with lettuce, tomato, onion, bacon and American cheese…
The momma and poppa finches were busy this summer. Three rounds of eggs in the nest that they built in the spring wreath on our front door.
You may remember when we returned from vacation late one night we entered the house through that door and the dad finch flew into the house. We had a hell of a time getting it out.

Just go check out their site. Kate and I met the wonderful people that run this online/pop-up coastal goods store and you couldn’t put together a cooler collection of nautical themed stuff for your home or for gifting.
You may remember the cigar ash tray with working wheel and compass we got at the Bluefin Blowout from www.thatcherellery.com
