Heidi Caswell Zander One-Artist Show

October 26 – November 7, 2019
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 26th, 2 – 4 PM

An exhibition of oil paintings by Rockport artist Heidi Caswell Zander will open in the Marguerite Pearson Room of the Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) on Saturday, October 26th with an artist’s reception from 2 – 4 PM. The exhibition will be on view Saturday, October 26 – Thursday, November 7.

Heidi Caswell Zander’s work bares the imprint of growing up immersed in the artist culture of Cape Ann, Massachusetts. As a youth, summer days were spent in adult workshops absorbing the enthusiasm for capturing a cloud on 140 lb. watercolor paper, for being a link between natural wonder observed on location to its impression on a rectangle which would hang on a wall. Rich color and connection to place are the prime elements of her works. Caswell Zander’s signature brushstroke, which is used to convey both the excitement of creating the image as well as the value of making a mark, is retained through process, marks articulated and layered through to the final piece. There is an energy displayed by these brushstrokes. She distills from observation the essence of objects, their radiant colors, vibrancy of life, the subtleties of their relationships, their harmonies and completeness.

Heidi Caswell Zander is owner and sole artist of Tidal Edge Gallery in Rockport which opened in 2005.

A Rhode Island School of Design B.F.A. & M.A.T. graduate and member of the RISD European Honor Society, she has also lived in Rome, Italy, New York, and Berlin, Germany. Heidi is a juried artist member of the Rockport Art Association & Museum, North Shore Art Association and National Association of Women Artists. She is currently Rockport Art Association & Museum’s President. Her paintings are in collections throughout the United States and Europe.

The Rhumb Line Tonight – 8:30pm Dave Sag’s Blues Party special guest: Ken Clark Organ Trio 10.24.2019

courtesy photo

Ken Clark Organ Trio have been performing around New England and the eastern U.S. forthe past 15 years. “Organist Ken Clark, guitarist Mike Mele, and drummer Steve Stephan Chaggaris lean on the beat, (high stepping funk, shuffle boogaloo back beat ballad), build dynamic climaxes sprinkle in jazz solos and deliver the goods. Clark controls the B3 like a master: hip bass lines, sizzling chordal washes, feel-good riffs, funky blues lines and syncopated accents figure in the mix. The groove, the sonic power of the organ and a soulful message are a forceful combination for reaching the people, all the way from the church to the dance floor. Can’t beat the feeling.” ~ Owen Cordle, Jazz Times

Drunken Pumpkin Event Big Success

The Drunken Pumpkin flower arranging event hosted by Audrey’s Flower Shop was a big success last night at the Mile Marker. Nearly 100 women ( apologies if there were any men in attendance… saw none) were presented with a bundle of flowers and a pumpkin base.

Heather gave instructions and advice before we dive in to create our own pumpkin floral displays.

Mike Marker staff did their best to provide food and drink. Thanks Kyle, well done! At my table, Jean ordered buffalo shrimp and a chowder/chip plate. We were joined by Melissa and Amber-Rose.

It was great fun . Thanks Heather and staff! Looking forward to the Boxwood Tree Design event at the Beaufort December 5.

SHOUT OUT TO GLOUCESTER’S DPW FOR THE AMAZING DOWNED TREES STORM CLEAN-UP!!

THANKS SO MUCH TO MIKE HALE AND GLOUCESTER’S SUPER HARDWORKING DPW FOR THE OUTSTANDING JOB CLEANING UP AFTER THE BOMB CYCLONE NOR’EASTER.

With tremendous speed and efficiency, they have done a stellar job cleaning up the streets of downed trees and branches.

Stumps are painted orange to help prevent people from tripping.

Our own beautiful plum tree did not survive this last storm. It had been severely damaged several years ago when struck by lightening. The flowering plum (Prunus cerasifera ‘Thundercloud’) was planted in the sidewalk in front of our home, providing us with years of joy and beauty. Baltimore Orioles, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Chickadees, Gold Finches and House Finches were just some of the birds that called ‘Thundercloud’ home.

The DPW came within one day of calling to report the damage. My husband was home at the time and he said that within fifteen minutes after arriving, the crew had cut down the tree, chipped all the wood, and painted the stump.

Prunus cerasifera ‘Thundercloud’

RIP sweet plum tree, we are surely going to miss you. Even more so, will all the wildlife sustained by your nectar-rich flowers, fruits, and sheltering branches.

KIM SMITH PRESENTS “THE HUMMINGBIRD GARDEN” FOR THE NORTH SHORE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY THURSDAY OCTOBER 24TH

SACRED HEART CHURCH PARISH HALL

62 SCHOOL STREET

MANCHESTER, MA

Please join me Thursday evening at the Sacred Heart Church in Manchester where I will be giving my presentation “The Hummingbird Garden” for The North Shore Horticultural Society. It has been a phenomenal year for Ruby-throated Hummingbirds on Cape Ann and I am looking forward to sharing information on how you, too, can create a hummingbird haven. I hope to see you there!

“The Hummingbird Garden” is free for members and five dollars for guests.

THE HUMMINGBIRD GARDEN

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the only species of hummingbird that nests in Massachusetts. Learn what to plant to help sustain this elusive beauty while it is breeding in our region and during its annual spring and fall migrations. Through photographs and discussion we’ll learn about the life cycle of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird and the best plants to attract this tiniest of breeding birds to your garden.
