Phoebe Potts is an author, comedian and storyteller. She’s also director of education at the Temple Ahavat Achim. Her husband is the well-known Gloucester artist Jeff Marshall, and she is mom to a Plum Cove third grader.
Phoebe’s show will be a funny take on trying to adopt a baby from China. She’s already a published author. Her first book was about trying to have kids and this show at Gloucester Stage will be the sequel to that.

Checking the traps in Norway — pat morss

We are in Tjome, Norway visiting Anne-Lise’s sister Berit and her husband Jan. This morning we followed him out in his boat checking his lobster traps. His private license allows him up to 10 individual traps and the commercial lobster season only lasts 2 months from October 1st to December 1st. Allowable size is between 25 and 32mm from tip of nose to end of tail.

Sunday at Tonno

Last Sunday we decided to go to Tonno and try out the Sunday dinner special featuring an appetizer and an entree for a fixed price. GMG Jimmy had the eggplant appetizer and I had the shrimp bruschetta. They were each amazing and nearly a meal to themselves.

I chose chicken parmigiana and Jim ordered spaghetti with meatballs and sausage. We were not disappointed. Lovely evening out! Thanks Tonno for bringing back some of Jim’s childhood memories in an Italian household.

North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra

Music Director Robert Lehmann and the North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra begin the Orchestra’s 72 nd season on Sunday, November 17 with music of Franz Shubert and W.A. Mozart.
The 3 p.m. concert at Swampscott High School Auditorium will feature Shubert’s Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished” and the Mozart “Mass in C Minor.”  Tickets will be available at the door for $30, $25 for seniors and students, and children 12 and under are admitted free.  Tickets can be purchased in advance at http://www.nspo.org
The concert marks the start of Maestro Lehmann’s 22 nd as the Orchestra’s Music Director.
Shubert’s Symphony No. 8, popularly known as the Unfinished, was begun six years before the composer’s death in 1828.  It contains, however, only two fully orchestrated movements, and musical scholars have debated whether the composer intended to write a traditional four-movement symphony.
Mozart’s Mass in D minor was completed in 1783.  The piece depicts the traditional outline of a Mass celebration in their order of liturgy and ritual.  It is considered one of Mozart’s greatest works.  It is grand in scale and reveals the influence in Mozart’s work of Bach and Handel, whom Mozart studied diligently.
The NSPO, founded in 1947, plays a season of three subscription concerts at Swampscott High School Auditorium.  After the November 17 “Fall” concert, the “Winter” Concert will be held Sunday, March 1, 2020 at 3 p.m. with a program that includes Borodin’s Polovtsian Dancs, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, and the New England Premiere of Daniel Crozier’s Concerto for Two Clarinets, with soloists William and Catherine Hudgins.
The Orchestra’s “Spring” Concert is April 26, 2020 also at 3 p.m..  The program will include Ralph Vaughn-Williams “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis”, William Walton’s Viola concerto featuring Kimberly Lehmann, and the Symphony No. 5 of Sergei Prokofiev.
In addition, the Orchestra plays two holiday concerts on December 8, 4 p.m. at St. Richard’s Church in Danvers and December 15, 4 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Church in Revere.  Admission to both concerts is free in exchange for a substantial donation of non-perishable food to benefit local food pantries.

I’m Karen McLane. My family built a house in 1870 in Rockport and WE STILL HAVE IT. And oh, I am a direct descendant of Richard Tarr, first settler of Rockport, through my great-great-grandmother, Eldora Tarr. My dad, Merrill McLane, was a local historian, writing books about Rockport, and he was a founding member of the “Rights of Way” Committee.

I’m in town with my dance company, Ancient Rhythms, for a show at MAGMA Dance in Gloucester Saturday, November 9. We’re excited to be working with some local dancers to present an exuberant dance performance with fantastical costumes, and something for everyone ages 8 and up. A few years ago, our dancers came up to perform our original production of The Crowning of the Woodland queen at Windhover. We are excited to share our dance again via a new production on the North Shore!

We have a fabulous audience base in the DC area, but here we are not really known. We would appreciate a shoutout from you so the Gloucester community knows about the performance tomorrow night.

Audubon Birdwalk Highlights Rescued Birds

Mass Audubon and Hunts Photo recently sponsored a birdwalk in Canton MA at the Museum of American Bird Art which we attended. It’s only about an hour’s drive and the trails are accessible and manageable. We definitely plan to return without a crowd of photographers and birdwatchers trailing along. Although no birds were sighted during the actual birdwalk (probably due to the healthy number of participants stomping through the woods all together), we were also treated to a show of rescued birds being rehabilitated and allowed to photograph them to our heart’s content. I am very sorry I did not get the name of the rescue organization as they were extremely knowledgeable and open to the desires of the photographers present.

Here are some of the rescues we met. They included a male American Kestrel, screech owl, saw-whet owl, and barn owl.
