Thanks to the generosity of Sarah Silfer-Swift at MAGMA, we are able to offer a free Nia class to all seniors on Cape Ann. Previously this class was held at the Rose Baker Center but due to their limited space and the growing class numbers, we are lucky to be able to dance in this beautiful studio. The center is accessible via elevator, see note below.
If you are a member of the Rose Baker Center, we will be keeping attendance as the center will continue to promote the class to its members. Thanks to Rose Baker Center Director, Lucy Sheehan for helping keep Nia available to its members.

Several days ago at daybreak after photographing the setting Moon, I popped over to Brace Cove. The temperature was 19, the wind was biting. and my hands were already frozen stiff from photographing the Moon. I only stayed for a moment but as you can see, the seas smoke was rising in the distance. Happy for the return of warmer temperatures, albeit however brief!

Here was my question: Anyone know what this is called, it is a Meteorology term? Happens when it is very cold outside and it looks like a tanker that hovers over the ocean? Thanks
Catherine Hull was able to answer my questions. It’s an optical illusion. “The phenomenon is called a Fata Morgana mirage, and involves a complex trick of the light. Caused by a narrow band of light above the horizon, the Fata Morgana gives the impression an object is actually floating above the water. The mirage distorts an object, and can occur on land, sea, polar regions and deserts.”

Tucked away safe and sound for the winter and, like many of us, dreaming of summer days gone by and those yet to come. Thank you, Paul Horovitz!

After October 31, Salisbury Beach State Reservation charges no parking fee so we look forward to when we can return there to take a look around. On our first trip in the off season, we were rewarded with frolicking seals. Apparently a number of them had been hauled out on the rocks during low tide, but something spooked them back into the water just as we arrived (I do not believe there is a correlation here 🙂 ) Only one remained on the rocks with a sunning bird for company. Others were swimming a flipping themselves around as if they were glad the off season had arrived too.

Gloucester’s 400th Anniversary: “Our People, Our Stories™”
Gloucester, Massachusetts, America’s oldest seaport, will be “400 years young” in 2023. To celebrate its past, honor its people, and welcome its promising future, the city has already begun preparations for celebrating this historic milestone and organizing the year-long celebration of its anniversary. Often times when we think of efficiency, we fall into two separate camps. The first thing is using less to save money. The second is environmental, be more efficient to reduce your footprint. I am here to make the case that the two are one and the same. That using less ultimately costs us less, which is better for our environment. Being efficient in our homes this winter means saving money, keeping your home at a cozy temperature and using less resources. It’s a win – win situation.
