LOBSTER TRAP TREE UNDER CONSTRUCTION, WITH A VISIT BY MAYOR SEFATIA, KEN RIEHL, THE DI STEFANO FAMILY -AND DON’T FORGET TO VOTE FOR WHITE OR COLORED LIGHTS

By noon today the super dedicated Lobster Trap Tree building team had made great headway. With snow predicted for tomorrow, the crew plans to have the tree built by day’s end. Don’t let the photos deceive; Shawn Henry was wearing shorts but it was frigid at noon and only getting colder as the day progressed.

Many thanks to Three Lanterns Marine for providing the 360 lobster traps required to construct the tree.

Mayor Sefatia and granddaughters, Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce CEO Ken Riehl, and Gloucester’s Economic Development Director Sal Di Stefano and his wife Maria (and kids), all stopped by to check on the tree’s progress while they were out shopping local for Small Business Saturday.

Please vote your preference for either warm white lights or multi-colored lights for Gloucester’s unique and beautiful Lobster Trap Tree. Thank you!

Barnacle Tea Room Annisquam

I was meandering through Ebay recently and came across this postcard featuring the Barnacle Tea Room in Annisquam. I thought it was completely charming and, naturally, began to do some research. Link to ebay here.

That research led me to this document by Peter Fortune outlining (among other tidbits) the history of this building which is still standing at 25 River Road in Annisquam. It is now a private residence. It’s called A Brief History of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, most recently revised in 2017. You can read it or download it here. It’s a very interesting read. I appreciate Mr. Fortune’s efforts!

I also found this ad in an August 1914 Cape Ann Shore provided online by the Cape Ann Museum (thanks to them as well!)  It’s well worth checking out. Perhaps you have a little extra time over a long weekend to do some reading. You just never know what you might find when you are wandering around the internet!

The past week Eastern Point has seen a wonderful influx of wildlife, in addition to the beautiful creatures already wintering over and migrating through.

On Tuesday before Thanksgiving, a great raft of Ring-necked Ducks joined the flock of Buffleheads and Mallards at Niles Pond. Five chunky American Coots have been there for over a week, and two female Ruddy Ducks have been spotted.

Fifteen Harbor Seals were sunning and basking on the rocks at Brace Cove on Wednesday, along with several Bonaparte’s Gulls that were diving and foraging in the waves. The increasingly less timid Lark Sparrow is still here, too.

Great Blue Heron agitating the Ring-necked Ducks

The most enigmatic of Great Blue Herons criss crosses the pond a dozen times a day but, unlike last year’s fall migrating GBH, who allowed for a closer glimpse, this heron is super people shy. He has been here for about a week and was present again today.

This morning I watched the four beautiful Mute Swans depart over Brace Rock, in a southerly direction. Will they return? Mute Swans migrate from body of water to body of water within a region. Perhaps they will return, or they could possibly have flown to a nearby location–further exploring our Island.

The four had not returned to Niles Pond by day’s end. If any of our readers sees a group of four Mute Swans, please write and let us know. Thank you so much!
