Good Harbor Beach Gray Day

It was a little bit gray and overcast but that didn’t stop the fun at Good Harbor Beach one weekday afternoon recently. There seemed to be more birds than people. The lifeguards appeared a bit lonely and chilled but the nesting plover appeared calm and in charge. Others braved the water or just read.

The plover exclosure and the nesting plover. They are well camouflaged!

Gloucester Hero’s Story Told on National Podcast

GMG contributor Pat Dalpiaz (yours truly) was recently interviewed by renowned genealogist and podcaster Lisa Louise Cooke for an episode of Genealogy Gems Premium. It was Gloucester hero John Handran’s story as told here on Good Morning Gloucester as well as on my personal family history blog Gathering the Cousins that Lisa thought her listeners might like to hear.

It’s a story I’ve told here previously. John Handran was a US Naval seaman on duty in Lisbon Portugal in 1876 when he rescued a fellow seaman from drowning. Apparently this was not his first successful rescue, and it did earn him the US Medal of Honor as presented by President U.S. Grant. He was only 24 at the time. A few years later he married Sarah Campbell and they made a home here in Gloucester with 3 children.

John’s life was cut short in 1885 upon the sinking of the Schooner Cleopatra, itself an amazing tale. His story has been told in our family circles for many years thanks largely to the research skills of our cousin George Handran, a former Gloucester resident and esteemed genealogist.

Now, thanks to the work done as told in this podcast episode, John’s memory is honored by a plaque placed at Calvary Cemetery just prior to the quarantine. This was an arduous effort finally come to fruition due in part to the wide reach of the Good Morning Gloucester blog. Researchers looking to honor John Handran found me through GMG and the story began! It’s a lesson in how far and wide the interests of the readers and followers of the blog stretch.

When restrictions are lifted, a dedication ceremony will be held at Calvary Cemetery and I hope anyone interested or related can attend. I would love to  meet you all.

Lisa Louise Cooke has generously made this episode freely available here. Genealogy Gems Premium is a paid subscription service and is worth every penny of the $49.95 per year for its reasoned advice and responsive nature. Please give a listen as yours truly tells the story of researching Gloucester resident John Handran to verify his service to our country and his heroic acts.  If you cannot listen, read the story as told in the shownotes.  His story might have been lost to history but now can be celebrated.

Thank you readers and listeners for sharing these stories widely. Thank you Joey for your vision and support for all of us who love Gloucester.

Exciting News! Sawyer Free Library to Begin Curbside Pick up and Home Delivery Service on June 8th

Sawyer Free Library's avatarCape Ann Community

The Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Public Library is pleased to announce its phased reopening plan will begin on Monday, June 8. The plan, approved by the Library director and board, lays out phases that move the library toward a return to a “new normal” for its operations.

Sawyer Free Library, which strives to provide a welcoming, enriching, and above all, safe environment for their patrons was closed in early March to the public as a precaution against COVID-19. Now, as conditions allow them to reopen, it is their goal to provide library services in the least restrictive manner possible while preserving library patrons and staff’s health and safety.

“While we have and will continue to provide a lot of great services and programming online and through digital delivery, everyone at the Sawyer Free Library is anxious to get back to the business of serving our community in person,”…

Brittany Barry, of Brit Barry Design #letteringforloveproject

Hi Joey,
I want to introduce myself, my name is Brittany Barry, of Brit Barry Design, and I’m a local of Gloucester (I actually think my grandmother Jane Noble is friends with your mom).
I was sent the post from Good Morning Gloucester showing pictures of the #letteringforloveproject I’m taking part in and the windows I’ve done at the Franklin, Sample This, the Avenue Beauty Bar, Salon Unique, Avanti Salon, EnVogue Salon and Captain Hooks.  (passports I did not do)
The Lettering for Love Project was brought to my attention by another creative who started it in Reading. I asked if I could bring it to Gloucester and she was thrilled to have the movement grow as I was even more elated to be able to brighten and cheer up the windows of local businesses.  This is all about being able to spread love and positive messages during all of the uncertain and challenging times we have been living through, with all of the recent protesting its even more important to continue to send love and unity and let people of color know that I (we) stand with and support them.  If there are any businesses that would like to include a positive, unified or uplifting message on their storefront please reach out to brit@britbarrydesign.com. The handwriting is done for free, but donations are welcome and are given to the Open Door and Equal Justice Initiative.
I have about 15-20 more to go around Gloucester (many on Main Street) and Magnolia, so I’m sure you’ll be seeing many more pictures
I just wanted to let you know the story and message behind the windows and why they started popping up ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Thank you so much for you time,
Brittany Barry

Sincerely,
Brittany Barry

Annisquam Village Church

Members of the Annisquam Village Church volunteer to buy food, prepare and serve a Community Meal for clients of the Open Door several times a year. The serving of Community Meals in the dining room had been suspended due to the pandemic. Indeed, the meal that we prepared on March 11th was their last. Since then, the Open Door has been meeting the community’s needs for such a meal by means of take-out prepared meals (grab and go), and home delivery. Their main fundraiser for the year, the Empty Bowl Benefit, was cancelled. The Open Door needs to make up the shortfall somehow.

Our plan is send financial support equivalent to our expenses on food for the dates the AVC is committed to serve at the Open Door until was are able to volunteer once again.

In the meantime if you would like to donate directly the The Open Door click here: https://www.foodpantry.org/03_How_To_Help/donate.html
