Did You Know? (Gloucester Cinema)

My sister Judy came to visit yesterday and wanted to go see the movie “War Horse”.  She checked for cinemas nearby where it was playing and lo and behold, it was playing at the Gloucester Cinema.  I never knew there was a first run movie cinema in Gloucester.  I had been by it many times, but never really paid attention and thought it was a car dealership (which apparently it was 20+ years ago).  John Williams (top photo) has owned and operated the cinema for 11 of its 20 years.  Tim Spinney (middle photo) operates the concession stand.  It is a clean, small cinema with 3 screens and a bunch of game things to occupy kids before the movie.  It is on Essex Ave next to the Causeway, where we went after for the some of their great clam and fish chowder, salads and a seafood platter which barely got touched, although it was fresh and delicious.  I love Cape Ann Cinema with its comfy couches and chairs and intimate livingroom feel, but it is great to know there is a local cinema to see movies like “War Horse”, which was a beautiful, thrilling, tear jerking movie by Steven Spielberg.  If you haven’t seen it, you should – bring kleenex.  Does anyone know the name of the War Horse in the movie?  Hint: he is name after our fearless leader.

8 Months Later Danvers Highway Construction Update

I wrote this on the blog May 14th, 2011-

Highway Construction in Danvers

Posted on May 14, 2011 by Joey C

I’m not sure if it’s Moe, Larry and Curley or Charlie Sheen and his two goddesses who are doing the highway work up in Danvers but I swear I’ve never seen more than three stooges working there at a time.

They’ve been working there forever. I have no idea why thus stuff takes so long. In other parts of the country I visit I swear they put in entire interstate highways in less time than they take around here to do a single overpass.

Is it a union thing? I’m not sure why they don’t bring in an army of workers and equipment and bang out one job at a time quickly rather than have 20 projects going on at once with just a handful of workers at each project and dragging it out for years.

and these were the responses in the comment section-

is this a hysterical comment made by someone who went by once, next time, take your camera and sit there for a while…this is how rumors get started…also, all projects like this a bid in an open and public way, you can research the bid process and trully have an understanding, then you can draw a conclusion not “jump to one”…

Someday, we will tell people about the on ramps on 128 during rush hour, bumper to bumper traffic and how thrilling it was to try and merge. Zero to 60 in 3 seconds.

Fast forward to today, eight months after that original post in which we talked about how long it was taking for that short section of highway to be complete

Go to Texas or Florida and they get this stuff done in months not years.  Seriously.

Get ‘er done.

Windy Walk

WINDY WALK

There’s something to be said for

venturing out in the cold

and heading into the wind:

the bite on the face and tears

dimming sight, the pounding of

the surf echoed by my heart;

the dog hunkered down trying

to get under the wind, the

bleakness of the empty beach;

short steep waves with their tops blown

off , sand lifting and shifting

like in Lawrence of Arabia,

and the marsh grass showing

the scudding clouds the way to

yesterday’s calmer weather.

Did You Know? (Homies Fish)

I had taken this shot because I liked the scene, and it wasn’t until I looked at it on my computer that I saw the homie diving for a fish.  I think of them more as scavengers, beggars and thieves and harvesting and dropping mussels and clams on rocks, docks and rooftops.  I don’t ever recall seeing one dive into the water like this.  They probably do it all the time, I just never caught one doing it before.

Good morning Gloucester it is indeed!!

Hi, Joey, thought you might like to know that one of the stellar residents of Gloucester, Charlotte Papp, my granddaughter, the current reigning Miss MA, also a sophomore at Wooster College, was chosen in a Vogue, Italian, contest with rising photo artist, Jacob Benjamin Taylor from West Newbury, MA ( a childhood friend who submitted the photo), among 1,000s of photos—it was chosen to appear in the latest Vogue picks on line. Charlotte also heads her Heart Foundation, helping to support children in need of greater heart health. Charlotte also reigned among other honors as Miss RI also! Her great heart and inner beauty reign supreme with her talents in art, sports, modeling and journalism, a very accomplished young lady on the rise in the International scene.

Please vote and urge all in Gloucester to vote for their own to further chances to appear in the worldwide edition soon coming of Vogue that would feature these native MA residents!!!! Always the best and first waves in art and fashion to hit the shore are from Gloucester!!! Go Charlotte and Benjamin with great Congratulations!!!

Unique Opportunity for Artists

Photo of artist Kathy Liao from Seattle, Washington in summer 2011 Residency

Goetemann Residency:  a unique opportunity for artists in Gloucester, MA
Be part of the next generation of  21st century artists to build on the foundations set by Edward Hopper, Milton Avery, Nel Blaine, Winslow Homer, and many others.

We are currently accepting applications for the 2012 Goetemann Artist in Residency Program at the Rocky Neck Art Colony (www.Rockyneckartcolony.org). Three visual artists will be selected to be in residence for three one month residencies during the summer season from May to October of 2012.

Rocky Neck sits like a jewel in the large fishing harbor of Gloucester, MA. With rafted fishing vessels sitting below the stacked houses of surrounding hills, it has provided the visual drama and complex beauty to draw America’s greatest artists over the last 150 years to the oldest working art colony in the United States. Residents accepted will receive a prime live-work studio both private and on a wharf right in the midst of it all.

Choices for subject matter are endless.  Interpretive possibilities abound.  We encourage applications from artists interested in the naturalistic phenomena of this place as well as from those on the cutting edge of contemporary thought and exploration.

GLOUCESTER — Paul Francis Frontiero, Sr., 86, of Gloucester, passed away on Friday morning, January 13, 2012, at the Addison Gilbert Hospital.

Born in Boston on May 3, 1925, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna (Lovasco) Frontiero. During World War II, he had served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a Seaman 1st Class and Boatcoxswain.

Paul was very proud of his service and had fought in numerous campaigns including landing Marines in the first wave of the invasion of Japan where prisoners from six nations were waiting for them on the docks. For his service he was awarded the American, Asiatic and Pacific medals, Philippine Invasion and Liberation medal, Japan Occupation and Victory medal with three Battle Stars.

As a young man, Paul began fishing with his father and had worked on many boats as an engineer, cook and doryman. He later gave up fishing to raise his three boys and began his career as an artist. Paul was an accomplished artist and his works hang in many private collections around the world.

Regarding the chart, I can provide a chart like that starting with any Ciaramitaro (and their spouses) born in Terrasini before 1911 for which there is a baptism record published. So, if someone has an ancestor other than the Carlo show, I can send a chart.

you might also want to mention, most of the documents for Terrasini (and other nearby towns) are now online

click on Palermo at the top and it will show the other towns. Terrasini is closely linked to Cinisi and Carini
and also had a lot of immigrants from Partinico, Prizzi and Monreale.
