Big Mike’s Bikes Blowin Up!

image

Hey Joey!

Just wanted to let you and the GMG readers know we’re moving to a bigger space! We had NO IDEA we would get this popular, and we are running out of space here on Maplewood. We’re moving to the former Junque & Disorderly spot at 57 Washington, next to Tacos Lupita and Sclafani’s. It provides us with storage space for all our trade-ins and purchases, and no more tripping on bikes! We should be open the week of Thanksgiving so we will be all set for Christmas season.

We recently started selling Redline BMX bikes in addition to being a new Jamis dealer, and new 2014 models are reasonably priced Christmas gifts for boys and girls! Now we can have a space to actually display them!

HUGE thanks to you and all the GMG contributors and readers for the support we’ve gotten since we opened a few years ago. We knew Gloucester needed a bike shop, but we didn’t realize how much support Gloucester gives to local business!

Len Robertson Oarmaster 2013 & 2011 (pictured with Erik Dombrowski of the IDRC)

On September 29th, the International Dory Racing Committee held its annual Oarmaster Cup race off the Dock at Maritime Gloucester.  The course was set to begin at the Maritime’s dock and proceed out around Ten Pound Island , then back to the start line.  Eight participants enjoyed excellent late September weather and navigated their 800+ pound dories single handedly through the course (see times below).  The winner for a second straight year (2012 was cancelled due to inclement weather) was Len Robertson with a time of 21 minutes and 30 seconds on the 1.75 mile course and proving once again that he is the best single dory rower in the US. And, not to diminish Len’s rowing prowess, we also had a couple very impressive competitors who competed in the Oarmaster as their first dory race.  Gus Cambell (our youngest participant ever) and Bob Ritchie (just started rowing in the “learn to row” program last May) both took to the sea this day, navigated the course well and finished strong.  Gus and Bob, as well as the rest of the competitors deserve much praise for putting their pride and body on the line in this very challenging race!!

Making the day a little more special for all involved, a memorial service followed the race to honor a fallen member Mike Regan.  Mike’s family and friends attended the races, donated some food and drinks for the festivities and honored Mike’s life and passion for dory rowing.  All who attended enjoyed a special day on the Gloucester waterfront.

Special Thanks to all who helped organize, set up, breakdown, get the boats to the course and back, start and time the races…including but not limited to: Maritime Gloucester, Joe Novello & Tim Oakes, Damon Cummings, Hilary Frye, Jimmy T, Geno & Fran Mondello, Leo & Susan LaRosa, Lillian LaRosa, Janelle & Bailey Dombrowski, and many more!

Results:

1. Len Robertson             21:30:07

2. Jimmy Tarantino       22:37:44

3. Dave Buchanan           22:40:44

4. Erik Dombrowski        22:49:09

5. Jack Alexander           25:30:12

6. Peter Parsons               27:43:05

7. Gus Cambell                 30:55:10

8. Bob Ritchie                   30:56:19

2013 GHS Field Hockey Tournament vs Tewksbury Coverage By John Nasser

John Nasser Submits-

The 2013 GHS Field Hockey team played Tewksbury this past Wednesday in Tewksbury after qualifying for Tournament play during the regular season.
Even though the Gloucester girls lost 1-0 on a very hard fought game, they played their hearts out and gave everything they had.
Gloucester hasn’t seen tournament action since 2008 according to the GDT.
Congratulations to all the ladies and first year Head Coach Lauren Riley on an exciting and successful season.
They’ve made their school and fans proud!

2013 GHS Field Hockey Kudos From John Nasser

Hello Joey,

I just thought that the 2013 GHS Field Hockey team should get a little recognition for qualifying for the State Tournament this season following a 3-1 victory over Peabody this past Monday night.

These girls worked their tails off this year.

Right now their record stands at 8-6-1 which puts them in 4th place in their division. They have one more game to play before the tournament begins.

I believe it’s been six years since they last qualified.

The team is led by head coach Lauren Riley and assisted by her Dad, Don Riley.

Congratulations Ladies!

Family Ties, Inc. is a Massachusetts Non-Profit Corporation that was established to help families affected by cancer.  Family Ties, Inc. works with Relay for Life which is a 501(c)(3) company to help as many as we can in the fight against cancer.  In 1985, Charles “Chucky” Pratt was diagnosed with cancer as a 17 year old high school student.  Chucky lost his battle with cancer after four years and missed out on so many of life’s wonderful moments. Gloucester Based Cycling Show- Behind The Barriers

Yeah, why would we want this kind of thing here, right?  The people that rally against the world class event Cyclocross in Gloucester honestly baffle me.  Anyway check out the episode-

image

From the show site-

Behind THE Barriers heads to Gloucester, Massachusetts, for the Great Brewers Gran Prix of Gloucester, known across the cyclocross community as “New England Worlds!” Jeremy Powers is back in Gloucester after a long swing away from home, and is keen to repeat his winning effort from one year prior. Standing in his way are a tip-top field of riders, including young protegé Stephen Hyde, who makes his Behind THE Barriers debut. Also standing in his way is unseasonably hot, dry and dusty weather; the kind of weather that makes you want to hop in the ocean and go for a swim, a temptations Jeremy nearly succumbs to. Also on site are this season’s next big musical hit, The Sorcerers, who take you on a tour of their unrivaled touring vehicle. Once the racing starts, it’s a duel between a pair of New England’s favorite sons, with Jeremy standing toe-to-toe with Massachusetts legend, Tim Johnson, for top honors. Between racing, eating lobster, and hanging with Jeremy and his family, Behind THE Barriers takes you behind what makes the Great Brewers Gran Prix of Gloucester on of the most highly anticipated races on the calendar.
