Well played, Wally.

Ok, restaurants and bars, what are your plans for the Super Bowl? Anyone want to leave a comment about any plans your establishment has or Super Bowl promos being offered?

Our busy schedules and racing from rink to rink and activity to activity often leads to eating on the road, late take out dinners, and tons of money spent. I used to be much, much better about packing food, but that ship has sailed.
Last week, after an 8:00-9:00 pm practice, we yet again phoned Mike’s Place for a late dinner.
I ordered up some pizza, chicken fingers, and french fries and for the assortment of boys who were landing at our house for the night and I got the Protein Power Salad. It was phenomenal. Not only was it delicious, but it was so packed with great stuff that there was a ton left over of the “regular” size for Freddy to finish it once he and Thatch got home from an even later game.
NEW! Protein Power Salad
Served with orange vinaigrette dressing
Grilled chicken tenders, avocado, and sliced hard boiled egg, over a bed of baby spring mix. Topped with crumbled goat cheese and walnuts.
The photos don’t do it justice, but you should give it a try.

It’s official. The holidays must be over.

One of the things I love most about Cape Ann is that winter, spring, certainly summer, and fall you can find signs of a busy working waterfront everywhere you look. While these images speak to the hard work done by many, they are often also really pretty in their own right.

One of (maybe the only) positive things about the extreme low temperatures is the cool sea smoke that engulfs Cape Ann.

I love that the boys would rather play pond hockey in between their 100s of hockey games than anything else. Don’ Get me wrong… Xbox is a very close second.
The Mill Pond was a buzz this weekend. As I often say about Rockport….it was very Norman Rockwell.
Good times….great memories in the making.

In between uproarious laughs, the players sing very familiar musical tunes—with all-new lyrics. A grand showcase of community talent and local heroes will add to the audience’s delight.

This is one of my boys’ favorite events of the year. We weren’t able to squeeze it in this year, but it gives me the excuse to share the video of them tearing up the car show a couple of years ago.
It’s the Biggest Auto Show in New England… and the perfect place to browse hundreds of the newest vehicles! Located at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in the Seaport District, the New England International Auto Show is the premier showcase of the newest model year imported and domestic vehicles — cars, vans, crossovers, hybrids, light trucks and sport utilities – cars to suit every budget and lifestyle. Factory and dealer representatives are on hand to answer your questions in a no pressure environment, and with your favorite car lines all under one roof, it’s easy to compare prices and features, saving both time and money.
So come sit in the cars, pop the hoods, inspect the trunks, kick the tires. The New England International Auto Show is great entertainment for serious shoppers, car buffs and the entire family!

On January 13th Gillette asked, “Is this the best a man can get?” as a spin on their long standing slogan “The best a man can get.”
Lots of talk last night and this morning about this Gillette Ad. As is typical……it seems people are divided. Some are applauding and some are boycotting. Some are feeling vindicated some are feeling insulted. Your thoughts?
Bullying. Harassment. Is this the best a man can get? It’s only by challenging ourselves to do more, that we can get closer to our best. To say the right thing, to act the right way. We are taking action at http://www.thebestmencanbe.org. Join us.
While going through my phone last night I found this photo from August. It is always right about now that I begin to miss summer days. These oilskins all lined up for a hard day at work definitely say Gloucester to me.

Any day on the beach is a good day, but boy was it cold on Pebble Beach.

A friend has 4 tix available last minute for today’s playoff game.
Section 240. Tix are $150 each.
comment with your email or cell# and i’ll Connect you with the owner.

Well, two things…..
First of all, this is all the way down in Providence. Which is about 90 minutes away.
Secondly, it is sold out for this weekend….because it is pretty cool.
So, look into it and reserve your ice bumper car time slot for a weekend later on this winter.
The Providence Rink at the Alex and Ani City Center has the first outdoor rink to host this unique all-ages entertainment. Imagine sitting in the bumper car moving forwards, backward and sideways with a full 360-degree turn radius bumping opponents out of your way!

Head to Joppa Flats on Plum Island birding activities
Sunday Morning is Meet Backyard Birds from 10:00-12:30. Suitable for all ages and FREE.
Drop in at Joppa Flats for an up-close winter wildlife experience! On Sunday mornings in winter, Joppa’s Bird Banding Station Manager Ben Flemer presents demonstrations on bird research and banding. After capturing wild birds in the Joppa backyard, Ben brings them inside to measure, weigh, examine, and then release them. The unique band that Ben places carefully on each bird’s leg connects other bird researchers with the data he’s collected. You’ll learn about your own backyard birds and why they’re here while watching scientific research in action.
This is a free program. All ages welcome. No registration required. Since bird safety is dependent on weather conditions, this program will not be held in inclement weather. If in doubt, please call ahead to confirm that the program is on for the day.
Come birding with our talented guides in one of the best year-round birding locations in the country. Each week throughout the year (except July), we’ll search out avian activity in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. Beginners and birders of all levels are welcome to drop in and join us.Meet at Joppa Flats Education Center. Please wear weather-appropriate clothes and sturdy footwear, and bring binoculars (we do have some loaners available).
I am beyond excited that the first SoBowl has opened in Massachusetts and it just so happens to be in Beverly and super close to my office.
I feel in love with Acai Bowls this summer in Long Island so when I saw the sign for SoBowl’s grand opening in Beverly I went right away!
So delicious and a super cute vibe to sit for a little while.

My boys love this. Nice job, Mass Mudders
What a creative and fun thing to do with their Adopt a Visibility Site! We have always enjoyed seeing their displays at Exit 14 over the years and this one is our favorite. I think it is so great that they put such thought and effort into what they do with their site….and my boys definitely appreciate the work that goes into it. So, thanks to Mass Mudders!

I often joke, maybe even complain, about the schedule that we (and many other families) keep. It is met with a mixed bag of opinions. Some people applaud and appreciate the long weekends and busy days that our boys tend to have. Other people find it to be “too much”…detrimental even, so I’ve been told. I do understand both sides of the argument. Truly.
That having been said, I can tell you that we only do it because our boys love it. And, after weekends like this, I am incredibly proud of their determination, stamina, and commitment.
Thatch skated hard late Friday night with a short handed Rockport Middle School team. After getting home at 10:30 he was up at 5:00am to play in Haverhill with Cape Ann PW1. With no downtime in sight, he went directly to the Coast Guard Station for three hours of Sea Perch training and annual inspection prep with the Navy Sea Cadets. He was dismissed at noon and we drove directly to Rhode Island for two big Coyotes games. Back in Rockport at 10:00, and totally wiped, he managed to tackle his math homework patiently and without fuss.
Over-scheduled? Perhaps. Dedicated? Absolutely. Was he happy to be in all of the places he was? For sure. Being a part of these teams, groups, and organizations means everything to him.
I love him and all that he gives. I also love all that their sports, interests, and activities have added to our family dynamic….especially the friends it has added to our lives. We’re pretty lucky.
So, is there a fine line between appropriately busy and over-scheduled? No doubt it depends on the child. But, until one of the boys asks us to do things differently, we’ll keep on going on.

Rye, New Hampshire
My boys have both been here a few times and love it! It is HUGE. It’s also a great option to break away from the normal indoor activities that your children may need a little vacation from. You can bring your own bikes, scooters, skate boards, etc. or simply rent something up there.
Before we get to the ramps, we have a ton of viewing areas, retail, concessions, bathrooms, showers (camp use only), multi-purpose rooms and usually a good joke or two.
Rye Airfield is New England’s premiere skate & bike park. Our indoor skatepark was originally designed and built by Jack Murphy Productions (designers of The Gravity Games, Vans Skateparks and the Dew Tour) with the consultation of former Pro Skaters, Dave Duncan, Andy MacDonald and Chris Senn. Over the past decade we have remodeled a handful of times with the most recent phases of design and construction being completed by Brad Jameson and John Saxton of Skidmark Skateparks along with a covert crew of volunteers.
We are not just a skate & bike park though, we also offer a full service pro shop that carries a solid selection of bike, skateboard and scooter products from completes that are ready to go, or all the parts you need for a custom built ride. Our mechanics can build and repair just about anything that is used in the park.
Our year round indoor facility has 50,000 square feet and features everything you’ve dreamed about riding or skating all under one roof. Our outdoor area is more than 100,000 square feet and is a work in progress with wood and dirt features. The ultimate goal is to create an outdoor bike park that offers something for the cross-country mtb rider and the dirt jumping bmx rider.
