CAPE ANN WILDFLOWERS BLOOMING TODAY!

Summersweet (Clethra alnifoloa( ©Kim Smith 2015

Summersweet

There is an exuberant abundance of wildflowers blooming in marsh and meadow all along the shores of Cape Ann and here are just a few snapshots. When out and about on a wooded walk, you may notice a wonderful sweet spicy fragrance. What you are smelling is more than likely our native summersweet (Clethra alnifolia), which also goes by the common name sweet pepperbush; perhaps a more apt description of its potent and zippy honey-spice scent.

Opening Hidden Doors: The Unifying Power of Art

Third Tuesdays Program Reconnects Older Adults to Art and Their Community

The Cape Ann Museum announces the beginning of a unique new program, CAM Connections Third Tuesdays, which brings Cape Ann art, culture and history to older adults in the local community, and invites individuals with memory challenges and their care partners to be part of the experience. The program offers meaningful engagement with the Museum collection through small group conversation in the galleries on the third Tuesday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

The heart of the Third Tuesdays program is to create a welcoming space for open-ended discussion, art appreciation and reflection. Art is for everyone. The Third Tuesdays museum experience of slowing down to explore the world of a painting, object or artifact stimulates wonder, and ignites new ideas and discoveries for participants. Looking at art can open the door to express an idea or feeling, find a personal vision, or unlock an instinct. After a recent CAM Connections tour, Pippy Guiliano, museum guide expressed the many ways the experience stimulated ideas and was unifying, “We had another wonder-filled visit. The level of engagement was palpable. Conversation was off and running … progressed easily covering painting techniques and composition, technology, poetry, color effects, people mellowing with age, inner and outer light.… Our souls were soothed and our minds tuned up in the warmth of camaraderie.”

Third Tuesdays promotes active engagement with the arts as a bridge to reduce isolation and offer an enriching art and culture experience. The Cape Ann Museum, a regional center of art, history and culture with a treasured collection, invites the personal and collective history of older adults with ties to the region, past or present, to be part of the Third Tuesdays experience. The role of the Museum as a community center, bringing people back into connection with their own essential history and with others, helps to form new connections in an atmosphere of mutual fun, growth and learning.

If you are interested in learning more about CAM Connections Third Tuesdays tour program, or would like to make a reservation, please call Cara White at (978)283-0455 x24 or emailcarawhite@capeannmuseum.org.

Discover John Sloan’s Gloucester: A gallery tour with curator Martha Oaks

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present a special gallery tour with Cape Ann Museum curator Martha Oaks on Friday, August 21 at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $10 for Museum members; $15 nonmembers (includes admission). Space is limited; reservations required. For reservations and tickets please call (978)283-0455 x10 or emailinfo@capeannmuseum.org.

One of this country’s most important artists of the early 20th century and a highly respected teacher, John Sloan (1871-1951) spent five summers—1914 through 1918—living and working on Cape Ann. During that time he created nearly 300 finished oil paintings, using Gloucester’s rugged landscape as a backdrop to experiment with color and explore ideas about form, texture and light. Arguably the most productive period of his career, the body of work that Sloan created during this time continues to astonish and delight viewers a century after it was completed.

The Cape Ann Museum is proud to have five major works by John Sloan in its permanent collection: Sunflowers, Rocky Neck, 1914; Old Cone (Uncle Sam), 1914; Glare on the Bay, c.1914; Red Warehouses at Gloucester, 1914; and Dogtown, Ruined Blue Fences, 1916.  Approximately 30 additional works, drawn from public and private collections across the country, will also be on display.

MONARCH BUTTERFLY EGG BONANZA!

Milkweed Field ©Kim Smith J.PGNancy’s Milkweed Field

Ninety-nine thank yous to Nancy Lutts of Salem who responded to my plea for Monarch butterfly eggs. She follows both GMG and my blog and emailed immediately after reading the posts. Nancy has the most amazing farm and fields located along the Danvers River. She and her family have been farming the land for decades. Nancy invited me to come and collect eggs. She had been to one of my lectures, but you hardly get to know people at the programs so it was a delight to meet her and super fun to peruse her fields for eggs while chatting and sharing butterfly info. milkweed butterfly eggs ©Kim Smith 2015 Interestingly, Nancy’s plow wasn’t working as well as usual, so the mowing of her fields, which usually takes place in early summer, happened later than usual. Good thing! The two-inch tall emerging milkweed shoots were the females’ preference. This goes to a topic that is often brought up in the lectures that I give and one of the most frequently asked questions, “When is the best time of year to plow my fields?” I recommend plowing in early fall, well after the monarchs have emerged from their chrysalides and headed to Mexico. Although, the very, very best practice for the pollinators is to mow half a field annually, alternating from one side of the field to the other every other year. This allows for the pollinators to complete their life cycle within a two year time frame. The single greatest threat to Monarchs, as well as all bees and butterflies, is habitat destruction in the United States, whether it be from Monsanto’s Roundup or from mismanagement and loss of fields and meadows. Nancy Lutts Salem ©kim Smith 2015Nancy has a truly fabulous butterfly and hummingbird garden that I’ll be back to photograph on a sunnier day. Nancy Lutts garden ©kim Smith 2015

Schooner Adventure Mast Hoops Made in Gloucester by Geoff Deckebach, Greg Bover, and Bill Holmes

Schooner Adventure Gloucester ©Kim Smith 2015The perfectly formed mast hoops on the Schooner Adventure were custom made at Gloucester’s own C.B. Fisk organ building company. The Newbury company Pert Lowell makes mast hoops however the largest they have to offer is only a foot in diameter. See the video of Greg, Geoff, and Bill making the hoops, from shaping the strips of steamed ash around the form to finished fastening. Geoff Deckebach is the lead shipwright and restoration project coordinator for the Adventure. Greg Bover shares that Geoff made the ingenious circular jig. The ash for the hoops was donated by Jim Knott, who also donated the ship’s engine.

The next member sail is this coming Wednesday, August 12th at 3pm. Take advantage of this fabulous offer! For more information about becoming a member and sailing benefits visit the Adventure website here.

Butterfly Days are Here!

Monarch Butterfly Female -2 ©Kim Smith 2015Female Monarch Butterfly Necating at Red Clover, Waring Field, Rockport

I am looking for Monarch eggs and will travel! Monarch eggs are found on the upper leaves of milkweed plants. The eggs are tiny and dome-shaped, only as large as a pinhead, and are a pale golden yellow color.

Waring Field supports myriad species of pollinators and is simply a fantastic place to explore. Although I didn’t find any eggs on my search on the leaves at the Common Milkweed patch at Waring this morning, I did see four adult Monarchs, three male and one female, along with fritillaries, a Common Ringlet, a bevy of Pearly Cresentspots, Blue Azures, and Yellow Sulphurs. The Monarchs, Ringlet, and Sulphurs were nectaring at the great field of Red Clover and the Pearl Crescents at the milkweed.

Emerging from the woods onto the sunny lower field, I startled a small herd of White-tailed Deer foraging. If you click on the photo to enlarge, you can see the male deer antlers are covered in velvet. Antlers are true bone structures and are an extension of the skull. The velvet provides blood flow that supplies nutrients and oxygen.
