Robson is a British/American artist (MFA, Chelsea College of Arts, London UK) who has spent the last twenty years visiting  Cape Ann.  For her first US solo exhibition, she presents a series of paintings made from drawing while sitting on just one rock overlooking the mouth of the Annisquam River over the course of six weeks in 2019.  Though based on one viewpoint, the highly diverse work celebrates the infinite possibilities of keen observation combined with an artist’s subjective experience.  Produced in a pre-Covid time, the series is prescient as we now find ourselves inhabiting infinitely smaller universes.

American Legion Post #98 / Rockport Fundraiser

I’m getting back into my artwork now that I’ve retired from nursing after 43 years.  I’m doing a fundraiser for the vets and James and Anna of Cape Ann Giclée are helping me with printing.
EssentialPigeonCovePoster.jpg
Every summer (with the exception of this one) the Legion in Rockport hosts vets for a fishing trip/ social event. I spoke with Larry Story, the vet who organizes the event and he said that lobstermen from Rockport and Gloucester donate their time for the outing.  I asked him about contributing to the cause with a poster I made from a painting of mine. As I mentioned James and Anna are doing the printing when I get orders.  The unframed poster is 11 x  14 inches and retails for $20.00.  All profits go to the Legion.
I live near the Pigeon Cove harbor and have gotten to see the workings of the waterfront since I’ve stopped working as a nurse and since COVID has pretty much curtailed my normal activities.  What I’ve learned is that the lobster industry is a very complicated and dangerous business and the work never stops as you know! I really admire what the guys are doing down here because it’s really a rare and treasured industry in Rockport.  We don’t have much tourism and the granite industry is long gone. And they’ve been working right through COVID as I’m sure the guys over in Gloucester are doing.

Seven Cape Ann Artisan Studios to host first ever Summer Mini-Tours| Creatively expanding space to the outdoors to accommodate visitors

2020Mini.jpg

The Cape Ann Artisans sorely missed the opportunity to open up their studios in the Spring so they are introducing a new twist for the summer months.  Instead of a full weekend tour, a sub-set of the full group will open their studios for one Saturday in July and one in August.

The participating artists include David Archibald, Cynthia Curtis, and Erin O’Sullivan & Scott Place (Twin Lights Studios) representing the ceramic arts.   They are joined by painter Jillian Demeri, sea glass jeweler Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco, glass artist Beth Williams, and Pamela Stratton Mosaics.   The group has self-selected based on their ability to use outdoor spaces and welcome visitors safely.

CAA collage for print.jpg

The Cape Ann Artisans have been discussing all possible ways to welcome our friends, family, neighbors, and visitors safely after a long winter of making new artwork.  We are thrilled to now be creative in the use of our combined indoor and outdoor spaces to make visitors feel comfortable and to enjoy the exquisite gardens and views of Cape Ann.  Cynthia Curtis will open up an entire end of her gallery to the outside thanks to a newly installed garage door.  Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco will expand into her lower barn space and set up tables to sit outside and enjoy the garden. David Archibald’s luscious garden will be in full bloom.

Visitors can easily group the tour into geographic proximity by visiting the Gloucester artists and Rockport artists in sequence by neighborhood from East Gloucester, to downtown, to Riverdale, Lanesville, and Rockport (or reverse) according to the digital postcard which will be circulated online or can be downloaded from CapeAnnArtisans.com

Artists are all taking appointment by phone, email, and Square appointments for visitors that would like to reserve a specific time.  Appointments will be given first priority if the studio is at Covid-compliant capacity.  Look for our pink flags to way find to the open studios!

All the  Cape Ann Artisans welcome appointments throughout season and hope to hear directly from visitors.

All Artisans will be asking for visitors to be Covid-Compliant, wearing facial coverings, using hand-sanitizer, and practicing social distancing.

Here’s a re-cap:

What:  The Cape Ann Artisans Summer Mini-Tours

When:   Saturday July 18th and Saturday, August 15th 10-5.

“Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a modern day hero, responsible for essentially every decision involving Women’s rights.” — Linda Bourke, Gloucester MA

“My self-portrait may seem as a cautionary sign for the viewers but in reality it is the way I step into the world, with caution.” —Lizbeth Cabral, Methuen MA

“The writer Alan Watts once said that when we refer to our lives, it’s absurd to say that we came into the world.  Instead, he suggests that we have grown out of it like fruit off the branch of a tree.

Through the act of painting, I often feel this to be true.” — Leon Doucette, Gloucester MA

“What identifies oneself is more complicated than what meets the eye, for example, DNA, fingerprints, and what lies beneath the skin.  The exploration of human identity is an endless journey.” — Nina Fletcher, Essex MA

Tough Love explores trauma I’ve experienced… the figure emerges from the paint and confidently looks ahead, not as a victim but as a survivor.” —Moriah Gilbert, Somerville MA

Woman in Winter: “Long after my mother was very old, I made this drawing. It was supposed to be of her.  But, my mother was beautiful.  As an old woman, she looked nothing like this drawing.  And yet…there is something about the drawing that reminds me of my mother.  Perhaps it is simply that the drawing was supposed to be of her.” —Juni Van Dyke, Manchester MA

Matz Gallery cancels “Where Is It?”

stairs.jpg
As the pandemic has grown and more restrictions are put in place, we have become concerned about how the pandemic will affect this year’s Matz Gallery schedule including “Where Is It?” which is coming up in June.  We have concluded that given all the confusion and insecurity about what will and what will not be open in the months ahead, it is better to cancel this year’s photo show.  This is very disappointing because “Where Is It?” has been one of our most popular exhibitions since 2005.  Every year this unique exhibit features photographs that showcase interesting and out of the way places in Gloucester, and we will miss it.
If you have submitted images for us to consider, we will keep your application materials for the 2021 “Where Is It?” Stay well in these strange and difficult times.

The Jane Deering Gallery – Opening for the exhibition “Formally Taught … and Not” is Virtually On!

Dear Friends,

The exhibition Formally Taught … and Not is fully installed at JDG and is a grand showcase of creativity.

We had hoped to celebrate the many Senior Citizens who put forth their work and the wonderful professional artists who gave their art and support to this show.

And then …… the world shut down.

But there is good news — virtual reality has come to the rescue and all the art can be viewed by going directly to the works via this link: https://janedeeringgallery.com/exhibitions-jdg-gloucester-ma/formally-taught-and-not/1.

Once there, click on the small arrow in the upper right-hand corner to surf through all images.  Plenty of info for each work.

Thank you for your support of the arts.
But most importantly, stay healthy,

Juni Van Dyke
