Abstract artist Gordon Massman, in conjunction with Cape Ann Cosmos Media, will host an OPEN STUDIO event in the artist’s 2500 square foot industrial studio warehouse, on June 11, 4:00-7:00pm, at 31 Pooles Lane, Rockport MA. FREE and open to the public.
Mr. Massman paints large-scale emotional depth charges, taking the viewer on magnificent journeys into the soul. The artist’s statement:
“I paint the unstructured indeterminate character of feeling, irrespective of logic and reason. I reach deep inside the complex nature of urges, desires, wishes, and motivations of the blazing human psyche. In the end, for me, there is only the tube of paint, the canvas, and the sum total of my life. I am blessedly untrained and, therefore, have no guardrails or painterly traditions to restrict my creativity.”

The Matthew Swift Gallery in Gloucester represents Gordon Massman’s work. In addition, the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA, represents eight of his “museum quality” paintings through its corporate lending program.
Before Mr. Massman embraced painting full time, The New York Quarterly Press published seven volumes of Gordon’s poetry. In 2013, his four-hundred-page volume of collected poems was nominated for The Pulitzer Prize.
Mr. Massman holds an MFA in creative writing from The University of Alaska. He received his undergraduate degree from The University of Texas-Austin in 1972.
The June 11 Open Studio event will be Gordon Massman’s first unveiling of his work to the public. Attendees should be astounded, moved, and inspired by this vibrant, large-scale production of a uniquely creative outburst of expression. Gordon continues the legendary Rockport art tradition but moves into a new dimension and an unparalleled scale of painting.
Food, libations, and music will enhance a wonderful experience for all.

Rockport Art Association & Museum is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings by Lully Schwartz. The exhibition will open 25 June and remain on view through 14 July 2022.
Exploring a range of subject matter, Lully Schwartz creates oil paintings that capture the light of summer with a spectacular range of colors. Rich strokes of paint combine abstract qualities with realism to form Lully’s signature style of art. Beach bathers, bold flowers and brilliant ocean surfaces seem to convey the artist’s love for sun-soaked moments found in Rockport and beyond. “I paint the color of light with all its complexities, moments of joy, pain and beauty” explains Lully of her recent paintings. This exhibition offers the audience visual art that reimagines Cape Ann from a contemporary perspective.
LULLY SCHWARTZ (b. in Beverly, MA) graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1983 and today paints and teaches from her studio known as the North Shore Atelier.

With the help of a grant from the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and NOAA, Sea Scout Ship 5 has installed a public refillable water station at the Gloucester Harbormaster Building on Harbor loop. The Grand Opening is Saturday May 21 from 11-1. In addition to the Grand Opening, there will be local Environmental Organizations on hand to showcase their projects and offer opportunities for our community and youth to get involved.
Ship 5 has been working with the Gloucester Harbormaster since 2017 collecting and documenting trash at public boat landings on Cape Ann. To date Ship 5 crew members have logged over 33,500 items on the Marine Debris Tracker. Plastics are the worst offender. This refillable water station is Ship 5’s attempt at making a change. The trash is not going away, but maybe, with the refillable water station, people will change their habits and stop buying disposable water bottles. Everyone can use the refillable water station and feel they are part of the solution in the attempt to reduce plastics in the ocean.
Per manufacturers recommendations the Refillable Water Station will only be operational in the warmer months, Mid-May through Mid-October. Ship 5 will continue to maintain the refillable water station throughout the summer. The unit is filtered and has a water meter. Sea Scout Ship 5 will monitor the water usage and will be able to determine the number of potential water bottles that were kept from the ocean.
The Youth Environmental Summit portion of the event is to introduce the community and other youth to local environmental organizations that are available for people to participate in. There are environmental organizations that want youth involvement but are having trouble finding interested youth. And there are youth looking for environmental organizations. Ship 5 Youth Environmental Summit is a place to meet.

WINDHOVER Center for the Performing Arts is ushering in a new era!
Windhover is open! We hosted our first gathering of performance artists this past weekend, and there are many more gatherings and retreats to come. Our Windhover season really began with the showing of the premiere of Quarry Dance X: The Film, on April 24, 2022. Many thanks to the more than 300 of you who tuned in. It was great to know that so many in our audience share our enthusiasm for this unique dance form which combines the art of dance in the natural world.
In addition to showing the film, we hosted conversation among the creative team of artists who made the film, including the choreographer, several of the dancers, the videographer, the producer and the composer of the music. It was a thrill to listen to them share their perspectives on their collaborative process. There was also a time for a Q & A with the viewing audience.
The making of this film highlights one of the core principles here at Windhover — collaboration. We offer the opportunity for artists to spend time together, to work together, and to create together. And with your help, we will continue to do so.

Lanes Coven will present Macbeth in August. And the prose poem “Dogtown” by Percy MacKaye will be performed on Windhover’s grounds for a weekend in September.

Disney’s Frozen JR. is playing at the John E. Lane Performing Arts Center in Rockport, MA. Rockport Middle School Drama presents this spectacular 60-minute musical, designed for middle school-aged performers. The show runs Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 at 7:00 pm with a matinee on Sunday, May 22 at 1:00 pm. The musical is based on the 2013 Disney film and the 2018 Broadway adaptation. It’s right around the corner. Literally, you can walk or drive down the street or up the highway and enjoy some of the most engaging artists in the region. It’s the 39th year of the Cape Ann Artisans Open Studio Tour and 16 artists spread across 15 studios are looking forward to welcoming art lovers from near and far.
This year’s tour welcomes three new Artisans all based in Gloucester. John Abisamra, Photographer, on Carrigan Court; Rebecca Anne Nagle, Painter and Mixed Media artist who is located in the Cripple Cove Studios; and Melody Phaneuf, Painter located on Centennial Avenue. The new artists have brought exciting energy to the tour and also complement the genres of art that can be experienced. Enjoy the updated CAA video to get a window into what to expect as you traverse Cape Ann.
Many of the artists have expressed their inspiration and current direction in the “From the Studio” blog on the Cape Ann Artisans website. Here are a few highlights from the blogs:
Deb Schradieck was recently interviewed for Cape Ann ARTWaves and her story is fun and engaging. She is a prolific painter who has done sketches and paintings her entire life and recently added street scenes to her portfolio. Deb and Jon Abisamra are part of a trio that launched the new Gallery One in Rockport.
Jon Abisamra shares “My real passion is to capture the beauty of Cape Ann and its magical light through my camera. I try to capture the uniqueness each season brings. Photography for me is all about capturing a moment in time which may never be repeated. My real studio is the great outdoors.”
Melody Phaneuf shares: “I appreciate looking at things, particularly old, tarnished, abandoned things. Objects are combined, arranged, rearranged, discarded. All the parts are judged for their role in the design and expression of idea. “
Pam Stratton continues to expand her repertoire with encaustic wax and glass. She recently completed a work reminiscent her of her time in Ravenna Italy. She carved into a field of blue wax to inlay multicolored stars in her piece called Ravenna Dreams. Pam has also started a new line of jewelry incorporating glass threads that she pulls using the shards from her mosaic works.
Sinikka Nogelo recently made a piece called “Hidden Treasures,” for The Experimental Group of Rockport Art Association & Museum’s. The piece honoring the late Jacki Harrington. combines two disciplines, sculpture and painting. Nogelo has rolled two paintings that evoke the beauty of the outdoors into a richly textured cylinder, inside of which is a surprise fashioned from recycled paintings – a flower in full bloom. Look out for more surprises from Sinikka.
Artisans are always expanding their collections and finding new ways to get work into the hands of patrons. Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco’s blog, co-authored with Beth Williams, focuses on the importance of relationships with galleries. Sallie Strand is expanding her reach by leading a collaboration with the Emerson Inn.
The tour is “self-guided” with 15 individual stops to visit with 16 artisans. The CAA encourages visitors to do some advance planning to maximize their visit by using the Brochure with the map which is now available at all the tourism outlets and online. You will find brochures at the Cape Ann Chamber, North of Boston CVB on 95 South, Stage Ft. Park Visitors Center, local banks, and CAA partner locations. I’m thrilled to report that our last update raised an additional $9500 on top of the already received donation of $5,000 toward the expansion and modernization of the Windhover restrooms. This $25K matching grant allows Windhover to complete a much-needed expansion and update to its restrooms, modernizing them, and adding an ADA accessible restroom so that everyone can enjoy performances at Windhover.
There are no extensions for this $25K matching grant. I am hoping that all of you will be able to contribute even a small amount. As a thank you, we are planning a Donor Appreciation Day this summer to share in the communal spirit of Windhover and to experience these expanded upgrades with you in person. TheRocky Neck Art Colony’s much-anticipated annual fundraiser, BIGtiny, returns on Sunday April 10 and runs through Wednesday, April 13.
Close to 200 original works – all on a scale of 7-inches square – created by more than 100 artists are offered for sale. Artists’ names are not revealed – each work is signed on the back, so participants just buy what they fall in love with.

First-comers get the best shot at the work they want. Artwork is priced per day:

Museum To Give Back with “Gloucester Gratis Days” Offering Free, Self-Guided Tours on Tuesdays for Gloucester Residents
Hammond Castle Museum opens to the public on Friday, April 1, 2022. The Museum is marking the beginning of its 47th consecutive season with a ribbon cutting ceremony and daylong celebration on Saturday, April 30th, 2022. This season also marks the beginning of Gloucester Gratis Days, offering free tours for all Gloucester residents on Tuesdays throughout the regular season.
On April 30th, the ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 10 am and will be hosted by the Greater Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce. The Museum will open to the public from 10 am to 4 pm and will offer free, self-guided tours. Self-guided tours require registration which can be made online at www.hammondcastle.org prior to a visit or upon arrival at the Museum.
In keeping with John Hays Hammond, Jr’s original vision for his seaside, castle-home to serve as a museum offering the Gloucester community access to ancient works of architectural art, Hammond Castle Museum will offer Gloucester residents free, self-guided tours each Tuesday throughout the regular season which runs through the end of October. Self-guided tours require registration and may be made in advance upon arrival at the Museum. They are offered from 10 am to 3 pm to allow for enough time to adequately tour the museum which closes at 4 pm. Proof of residency is required at check-in.
The 2022 season schedule offers numerous opportunities to visit the historic site including weekends in April, November and December. The Museum will open daily beginning in May. The schedule is as follows:
· April: Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm
· May through October: Open daily from 10 am to 4 pm
· November and December: Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm
This season also brings forth new exhibits. The Spring/Summer rotating exhibit will feature Hammond’s explorations throughout Europe, the Caribbean, and Canada. In the Summer/Fall, the Museum will feature a temporary exhibit on Hammond’s family with a focus on John Hays Hammond, Sr. There will also be a new permanent exhibit on the staff members of the Hammond’s household. Over the course of the season, Hammond Castle Museum is poised to offer nearly 70 educational and community programs. Returning favorites include Candlelight and Spiritualism Tours and movies on the back lawn to Arms & Armor presentations. Some new programs include a Day of Puppetry with Vaudeville Puppets, an Animal Adoption Day with the Cape Ann Animal Aid and a New Year’s Eve Ball.
“So many in the community visited the Museum as a school child, but maybe have not returned since then. As one of their community museums, we want to them feel a sense of belonging here,” said Linda Harvey, executive director. “It is our hope to better engage our neighbors through our Gloucester Gratis Days. We are not the same museum they may have visited all those years ago,” she continued.
John Hays Hammond Jr.,known as “The Father of Radio Control,” was one of America’s most prolific inventors and a protégé of Guglielmo Marconi, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell. Built from 1926 through 1929, and incorporated as a museum in 1930, the castle’s architectural style is a mix of a medieval castle, a French chateau, and a Gothic cathedral. It was custom built to encompass Hammond’s private residence and laboratory, as well as his museum quality collection of architectural elements such as the facades of medieval shops and doorways from French chateaus. Also on display is Hammond’s extensive list of patents and his work with radio control and guided torpedoes for the military.
Hammond Castle Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is not handicapped accessible. The museum offers self-guided and guided tours and numerous educational and cultural events throughout the year. It is also available for corporate and private event rentals. Susan Erony is an artist and independent scholar based in Gloucester, MA. Her artwork has focused primarily on history and the human condition, has been widely exhibited, and is in public and private collections in the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Israel, Mexico and Ukraine. She has worked as a writer, curator, lecturer and teacher, always focusing on the intersection of art and society, and is currently represented by the Matthew Swift Gallery in Gloucester, MA.
A Timely Talk:
Art and politics are strange bedfellows. The first is in the realm of the spiritual, the magical and unconscious. We want art to move us, help us find transcendence and peace in a troubled world. Politics is in the realm of governing, and is about power. At its best, its goals are humane and generous. Susan believes art and politics do not cross, but art has a role in society’s ability to deal with dark times. What is that role?
The Experimental Group is a creative forum, its main mission is to increase public awareness and to foster self-expression by bringing artists together to explore and share ideas that cultivate creative freedom. The EG is encouraged and supported by the Rockport Art Association & Museum.

Works on view in the exhibition range in medium to include paintings, mixed-media, graphics, sculpture, digital art and photography. The exhibition runs from April 2 through April 30. The Experimental Group is a creative forum, its’ main mission is to increase public awareness and to foster self-expression by bringing artists together to explore and share ideas that cultivate creative freedom. The EG is encouraged and supported by the Rockport Art Association & Museum.

With the arrival of the choirs of spring peepers (tree frogs) singing throughout Cape Ann as of last evening, spring has begun! Windhover Performing Arts Center is taking flight this year with wonderful news and happenings. Through the generous support of so many, we have purchased a permanent frame tent covering that will enable live performances at Windhover, rain or shine! I am most grateful for this support, and I invite all of you to come visit our Windhover campus this summer to experience our performances under the brand-new open-air tent. The tent is scheduled to be installed during the first week in May. Once the tent is installed, I will provide an update with photos.

Finally it’s almost here! Quarry Dance X Online Cape Ann’s signature dance event, Quarry Dance X: The Film, will have its premiere on Zoom in early April and be released on Vimeo and Windhover.org. The premiere features Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre dancers filmed at two private Cape Ann quarries during the summer of 2021. This 30-minute film, produced by Windhover and filmed by Anders Johnson, features original music composed by Joe Mulholland, Professor of Harmony/Jazz Composition at Berklee School of Music in Boston. The Zoom premiere is free to attend. Registration information to see the film will be sent out in late March.
Another Incredible Summer at Windhover Windhover is proud to welcome audiences back for an array of exciting, inspiring outdoor events this summer. The 2022 schedule of performances, dance company residencies, classes and workshops is nearly set. The Gloucester Stage Company will return for the month of July. The newly formed Lanes Coven Theater Company will present two weeks of performances of Shakespeare’s Macbeth in August. Windhover is looking forward to hosting notable dance performances by Cornfield Dance, Continuum Contemporary Ballet, Queen of Nori Dance, Saving Grace Dance Ensemble, the North Atlantic Dance Theatre and more. Windhover will also offer movement and dance classes, as well as meditation and yoga retreats this season. To preview the 2022 season see the schedule here and check for weekly updates.

Thirty photographs by Bill Dwyer will be on display at the Naimo Gallery in downtown Ipswich, MA March 12 – April 12, 2022, in an exhibit titled Dead Phone Booths, Vol.1. Bill became infatuated with these structures about fifteen years ago as we became more dependent on cell and smart phones. He is inspired by the fact that we will never know how many countless conversations, break-ups, hook-ups, emergencies, drug deals, prank calls, etc. happened on each phone booth, but we can be sure they did. Phone booths are a dying breed and get scarcer every year. These images will be the first of hundreds of different images Bill has taken. All images are 30 x 18 inches and were shot all over New England, NYC & Brooklyn, NY.
In addition to the photography exhibit there are multiple musical performances as well as beer, wine, and finger food served at the opening reception on Saturday, March 12th between 4:00 – 9:00 PM, with a $10 suggested donation at the door. Come down for a full day of art, music, great people, and most of all, LIFE. All are welcome!
