Windhover Gala Fundraising Event – Fête Du Moment (Celebration of the Moment)
Following upon the tremendous success of Quarry Dance 3, Windhover invites you to a GALA FUNDRAISING EVENT: Fête Du Moment (Celebration of the Moment).
Windhover Performing Arts Center has been given a matching grant for exciting new plans to build an indoor theater. This will extend the season of live performances from May through October and allow for the continuance of excellent dance and theater events regardless of the weather. The goal will be to provide the audience with an exceptional experience at Windhover at all times.
In celebration of this grant and with a commitment toward building this theater and realizing this vision, we are hosting a two hour gala presenting Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre and Sarah Swift Slifer in a short program of dance during this intimate evening that also includes culinary treats, live jazz music, champagne and conversation. Dušan Týnek and his troupe from New York City performed the last three quarry dances on Cape Ann as well as their own choreography in the past on the Windhover stage. They are returning to perform a duet. Sarah Slifer Swift, a well-known performer on Cape Ann and award-winning choreographer, will present a solo dance she created while on artist’s retreat at Windhover.
Jazz pianist Joe Mulholland will perform some jazz riffs on keyboard.
Tickets are $55.00 per person and include festive drinks, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, the dance and music program – and an opportunity for great camaraderie.
Please join us as we launch our efforts to match the grant for a theater, and to rally around the expanding vision of historic Windhover. This Fête Du Moment will take place on the grounds of Windhover rain or shine, both indoors and outdoors (weather permitting.)

James Montgomery just added young, rising Country star, Whitney Doucet to his lineup for the Celebrate Gloucester Benefit for The Open Door this Friday at Cape Ann Marina’s Waterfront Pavilion in Gloucester. Whitney is fresh off a duet with Country Star and American Idol judge Keith Urban that blew Keith away.
Whitney’s addition to the stellar lineup will add a Country flavor to the already unique benefit concert that showcases two beautiful and talented young women namely Jazz phenom Marissa Licata, and rising Blues star Danielle Miraglia, and also one of the Founders of the Boston Rock scene Willie Loco Alexander. Backing the Montgomery Band that night will be the Sax Attack horns, one of Boston’s premiere horn sections, who add a lot of power on the songs they perform.
The very best in Blues, Rock, Jazz, and Country will all be represented in one unique electrifying performance. EVENT DESCRIPTION: The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church is pleased to announce the next event of its monthly series called Music & Meditation in the Meetinghouse (MMM) that offers Cape Ann residents and visitors a unique combination of beautiful music and relaxing meditation.
Each MMM event offers the participants an opportunity to enjoy a different combination of peaceful self‐awareness through various kinds of meditation enhanced by the musical offerings. The MMM experience is intended to be comforting, entertaining and spiritual but it is emphatically not a church service. It is held in the candle‐lit sanctuary of the grand Meetinghouse, a place of gathering and welcoming for the entire Gloucester community for over 200 years. The Meetinghouse, whose lantern tower with a Paul Revere bell has guided generations of mariners safely into our harbor, is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the oldest surviving church building on Cape Ann.
The August event will feature meditation leader Brian King with cellist Kristen Miller. There will be a collation with light refreshments afterwards in the Entrance House, giving participants the opportunity to meet the leaders and each other in a convivial atmosphere.
The Sanctuary is accessible with facilities for persons with disabilities via the side entrance at 10 Church Street. A free‐will offering of $10 is requested but no one will be turned away and everyone is welcome regardless of financial capability.
Find your way Sunday evening to the green at the corner of Middle and Church Streets to discover an hour of peace, enjoyment and contemplation in Gloucester’s historic 1806 Meetinghouse.
MEDITATION LEADER: Brian King is a singer, songwriter, and performer. Since a young age, he has cultivated his passion for spirituality, religion, and mythology by studying multiple traditions from Buddhism, Neo‐Shamanism, and Theosophy to Tarot, Jungian psychology and world mythology. Brian has been greatly influenced by the works and teachings of Joseph Campbell, Alan Watts, and Pema Chodron. He has practiced various forms of meditation and contemplation throughout his life, and has found the chakra system to be a beautiful way to balance the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.
For a decade, Brian worked in public health as director of Prism LGBT Health. He fronts the local band neo‐cabaret band, What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?
MUSICIAN: Cellist Kristen Miller is a one‐woman ensemble. She connects her antique cello to a live digital recorder to stack layers of lush cello, spoken word and singing to create a style that
Billboard writer Bobby Borg calls “romantically, hauntingly, charmingly, brilliant.” As a solo artist, Kristen has released three CD’s, all of which charted on college and community radio nationwide. Kristen is the recipient of several awards and scholarships, including Jam Magazine’s Female Artist of the Year, and the Zara Nelsova Cellist Award for excellence in performance. In addition to solo performing and film scoring, Kristen also enjoys work as a session cellist. She has appeared on records for artists as diverse and varied as Vance Gilbert, Assembly of Dust, and Grammy Award winner Irma Thomas. When she is not performing, Kristen shares the joy of cello and singing with students of all ages. She is also a practicing Shaman, trained in the Unani tradition from Malaysia.

You may or may not know that major rock stars live right down the road in Beverly, MA. CASPIAN, performed at Beverly’s Block Party last year, but mostly they tour the world. On October 18, they’re celebrating their 10th year as a band with a special hometown anniversary concert at The Larcom Theatre. Yesterday at noon, they offered pre-sale tickets to their fan-base, who turn out to be highly loyal — meaning the show is nearly sold out barely 24 hours later (most of the orchestra was sold out within an hour). Hard on the heels of a brilliant stint as Music Director of the Annisquam Village Players’ production of “Peter Pan,” 21-year-old Turkish pianist Cem Oslu turns his talents to a mostly classical concert at the Annisquam Village Church, Sunday, August 17. Pushing the ivories in another direction is nothing new for this young prodigy. Born in 1992 in Adana, Turkey, Oslu started his music education with piano lessons at age 12. In only a year, he had won a full scholarship to Bilkent University’s Faculty of Music and Performing Arts where, for five years, he had the opportunity to study with Sanem Berkalp, Hande Dalkilic, Karl-Andreas Kolly, Oxana Yablonskaya, Edna Golandsky and Olga Kern.
In 2009, Oslu was awarded Third Prize in the Kamuran Gundemir Piano Competition, and later that year performed the Grieg Piano Concerto in A Minor with the Bilkent Sypmhonic Orchestra (the Turkish “BSO,” in Ankara), conducted by Isin Metin. He was also invited to perform in the 10th Antalya International Piano Competition and at the Musica Mundi International Chamber Music Festival in Belgium. In 2010, he performed Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No.1 with the Bursa Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ahmet Taviloglu. Later that year he was accepted to Vienna Conservatory where he studied for two years.
At Berklee College of Music, Oslu’s concentration has been Film Scoring and Electronic Production & Design. In 2013 he was awarded First Prize in the MTNA (Music Teacher’s National Association) Compositions Competition on both state and regional levels, and Second Prize at the national level.
Oslu moves to Los Angeles in September, with film work in his sights. Terry Sands, Director of the Annisquam Village Players, says, “Peter Pan might have stayed a boy forever…but Cem Oslu has already hit 21, and we’re going to say ‘We heard him when…’ He’s got a great future ahead of him, and we were lucky to get such a talent for our play. This concert will be cream on the top!”
The concert will include piano music of Bach, Chopin, Schumann, and Scriabin. Oslu promises to play a bit of Turkish music on the harpsichord (with its buff stop imitating the sound of the oud!), and a composition of his own, as well. The historic Annisquam Village Church is at 820 Washington Street in Gloucester (corner of Washington and Leonard Streets). General admission is at the door only: $15. / Students $10. One performance: Sunday, August 17.
