ARRRRRGGH!

I’m incredibly frustrated! To save money,we switched to Comcast Triple Play  from Verizon for our phone and internet a week ago. We already had cable TV.

What a huge mistake! The cable guy installed it wrong, so we had to do it over the phone with some guy who knew nothing. Then, of course, the next day it went out again, so another hour was wasted getting it to work. Finally it seemed to be fixed. Five days went by, and each day I felt a little better about the switch.

And THEN…yesterday the service was extremely slow, and it eventually died. So we call again and this ditsy girl kept apologizing. I hung up on her when she put me on hold for the fourth time. Of course when you lose service with Comcast, you also have no house phone. So we’re using up our cell phone minutes trying to resolve this problem.

Well, after several calls, we got it on again. (And got a refund on our installation fee).

Yay, it finally worked late lsat night! Maybe it will stay on this time.

RIGHT! So why am I here at 9 a.m. on my slow-as-molasses laptop on somebody in the neighborhood’s network?!!?

I’m calling Verizon!

Where Zat Answer from LAST WEEK!

Deck

It took a lot of figuring where this actually is. But we think it’s up behind the Lone Gull or the Joke Shop.  Joey took it from the Gloucester Bank parking lot.

I think Capt Wayno got it “Is it when you pull out of Sovereign Bank parking lot???????”

Think so?

Where Zat? Video with Prize!

Uh…this video is just about the worst I’ve ever seen, but you’ll get the key points. If you know this Where Zat?, it won’t matter that you get motion sickness watching it. Good luck! And next time I’ll use my Flip instead of my iPhone! Or at least I’ll hold the camera horizontal instead of diagonally!

Clue: This is in Gloucester (not downtown), definitely off the beaten path.

You win a great CD of Kitt Cox’s music if you’re the first person to identify this location! Thank you, Kitt!

Whoops! I forgot to anounce last week’s winner! Watch for it at 4:00 this afternoon.

My Incredible Adventure- The Liberty Clipper

DSC_2052 [640x480]

Home Port: Boston
Rig: Gaff Topsail Schooner
Year Built: 1983
Sparred Length: 125 Feet
Draft: 8 Feet
Beam: 25 Feet
Hull: Steel
Web Site: Liberty ClipperDSC_2056 [640x480]

The 125-foot Schooner ‘Liberty Clipper’ is a majestic steel replica of an 18th century clipper ship.

The term clipper as applied to ships may derive from the idea of them cutting through the water. Clipper bows were distinctively narrow and heavily raked forward, which allowed them to rapidly clip through the waves. The cutting notion is also suggested by the other class of vessel built for speed, the cutter. One of the meanings of clip since the 17th century is “to fly or move quickly”, possibly deriving from the sound of wings. The term clipper originally applied to a fast horse and most likely derives from the term clip meaning “speed”, as in “going at a good clip”.

Local Musicians CD release party in Cambridge

Dan King etc oval2
KBMG at the Berklee Preformance Center

BOSTON, MA: Singer/songwriter Dan King will perform with David Brown, Dave Mattacks, and Wolf Ginandes for their Boston CD release party at Atwoods Tavern in Cambridge on Thursday, July 30. The band, also known as KBMG, will play in support of their latest studio album, Western Color. KBMG played most recently to a fantastic audience at the Berklee Performance Center and are pleased to be back in Boston.

Their first combined full-length studio effort, Western Color, overflows with wasted love, light, rumors, and castaways—a ragged journey of sound and story combining folk, rock, and roots influences. A highly anticipated album, Western Color evokes the tangled landscape of northern New England’s rugged working class, crashing waves and ultra violet sunsets; and is the culmination of efforts from some of the best artists in the area

Guitarist David Brown is resident of Gloucester, Mass. and is a guitar legend, known for his work with Billy Joel, Dr. John, and Simon and Garfunkel. Brown’s Dobro and electric guitar are staples of the album and each note serves the gravelly no-frills roots-rock vibe of Western Color.

Wolf Ginandes lives in Framingham, Mass. and is a bass veteran known around the Berklee campus, Boston, and beyond. Among others, he’s played with GE Smith and The Mohegan Sun All-Stars, and his purposeful sound and obvious joy are heard throughout the album.

Drummer Dave Mattacks started performing with big bands in the UK before he joined the influential folk/rock group Fairport Convention. In 2000, Mattacks emigrated to Boston, where he continues to enjoy a full career as both a musician and a producer, spanning live and studio work. Mattacks’s discography includes five CDs with Paul McCartney and various albums and tours with—among many others—Nick Drake, Brian Eno, Jethro Tull, Elton John, Jimmy Page, Cat Stevens, XTC, and Loudon Wainwright.

An accomplished musician, King has played all over New England and both coasts. Highlights include the Indie Music awards at the famous Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, along side Luke Temple at Arlene’s Grocery and the Knitting Factory in New York City as well as being in Whoopi Goldberg’s birthday Band jamming with Whoopi and Robin Williams at The Cutting Room also in NYC.  He sites the moment Whoopi introduced him to Keith Richards and Ron Wood of the Stones backstage at Fenway Park as “the highlight of it all.”  He has also worked with Tom Hambridge, Willie Alexander and Tony Goddess, to name just a few.

King believes Western Color is the “epitome of the sound we’ve been striving for, I can’t imagine being able to work with a better group of musicians.”

From Paul:

“The Kalmar Nyckel from Delaware pulled into Gloucester at 4:30pm(yesterday) to refuel and pick up some Crow’s Nest T-Shirts. I gave them directions and told them to buy the shirts and then get out of there fast. ;]”

Right here in Gloucester! Here’s some great photos that Paul Frontiero took last night.  Thanks Paul!

The Kalmar Nyckel at the State Fish Pier!

The Kalmar Nyckel is a full‐ scale re‐ creation of the original 17th‐ century ship, whose historic significance rivals that of the Mayflower. The present day Kalmar Nyckel serves as the Delaware region’s floating Academy and Goodwill Ambassador. The ship provides a unique platform for the Foundation’s educational programs, offering the best in recent scholarship and experiential learning. Students get to experience the “Age of Sail” first‐hand during the Kalmar Nyckel’s floating classroom programs, helping to set sails, heave cannons, steer the ship, navigate with 17th‐century instruments, and learn about America’s maritime and colonial history.

The original Kalmar Nyckel was built by the Dutch in or about 1625 as a “Pinnace” – a class of vessels that could operate either as small warships or as armed merchantmen. This was the “Golden Age” of Dutch naval power and seaborne world trade, and the Dutch were the most advanced naval architects and shipbuilders of the 17th century.

photos by Sharon Lowe

Measuring 93 feet on deck and with a sparred length of 141 feet, she was stoutly built and remarkably seaworthy, characteristics that would serve her well throughout her long and remarkable career. Her original armament probably consisted of 12 six‐pounder cast iron cannon, with two smaller swivel guns attached to the quarterdeck rails.

The Kalmar Nyckel was purchased from the Dutch in 1629 by the Swedish cities of Kalmar and Jönköping and given her new name. The name means the “Key of Kalmar,” which derives from the 12th‐century castle that guarded Kalmar harbor, a fortress defense the ship was meant to honor and augment.

The Swedish Empire reached its zenith under King Gustavus II Adolphus (1611‐1632), the greatest war leader of his age, known as the “father of modern warfare,” whose battles are still studied in military schools. Gustavus wanted to enhance Sweden’s position as a Great Power and to secure his recent territorial additions around the Baltic. This would require the building of a navy to match his powerful army.
