Just one word…

Karen Ristuben will be performing “Just, one word…” On Monday, March 5, 2012 7:30 pm at the Rose Performance Hall at Endicott College Center for the Arts, Beverly, Mass., co-sponsored by Salem Sound Coastwatch and the Endicott College Environmental Society.

“Just, one word…” a performance lecture about plastics, addresses the issue of marine plastic pollution from an artist/educator’s perspective.  Karen offesr a different way to represent and communicate the hard scientific data currently the focus of many marine scientists, toxicologists, epidemiologists, and policy-makers. Her project deals with our use, over-use, and disposal of plastics, their toxicity, and their effects on our public health. Highlighting the issue of marine plastic pollution and its impact on ocean ecosystems including the marine food chain, she uses a multi-media performance/lecture format, using her own and archival video and photography, presenting the facts and data in an aesthetically compelling format. Her message is made personal by her personal story, including her voyage in July 2011 through the North Pacific Gyre with a leading science team from Algalita Marine Research Foundation.

BASE Jumping at Good Harbor

The guy’s name is unimportant, but he said he was working up to something a little taller…

Submitted by Charlie Carroll

Did You Know?  That BASE jumping, also sometimes written as B.A.S.E jumping, is an activity that employs an initially packed parachute to jump from fixed objects? “BASE” is an acronym that stands for four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: buildings, aerials, spans (bridges), and earth (cliffs).

The Land of Later On

Noted writer Anthony Weller gave a reading from his latest novel, THE LAND OF LATER ON, on February 25, 2012, in the Annisquam Village Library.  It is a compelling journey into the author’s imagined view of the after-life, engagingly and masterfully written.   Published by Amazon and available from them online and in paperback, it is also available at the Annisquam Library for $15.

Earlier books by Weller have included THE SIEGE OF SALT COVE, DAYS AND NIGHTS ON THE GRAND TRUNK ROAD, AND WELLER’S WAR.

Did You Know? (For Painters & Photographers)

When I come across something great, I like to share it.  I recently discovered Fine Art America, an internet art print marketing, social networking and sales site that I find really amazing and wanted all GMG painters and photographers to know about.  Every creative person who has any interest in exposing and selling their work needs to have an internet presence as part of their marketing effort.  Many artists I know do not have a website, or have a website which is not properly Search Engine Optimized, so no one finds it.  Fine Art America not only allows you to have a web presence, but gives you an impressive array of tools and muscle to make it possible for your work to actually be found on the web and not just sucked into the huge vacuum of the internet.

For free you can upload up to 25 of your images (up to 25M each – the larger the better as it allows you to offer larger good quality print sizes).  For $30/year (with a 90 day free trial), you can have a premium customized website and upload as many images as you want into an unlimited number of galleries, directly connected to FAA’s millions of visitors each month.  You can also connect it to your own existing website, especially if you have an e-commerce site, to drive more traffic to it.

You determine what you want to make on the sale of your images. When you receive an order for one of your prints on your website, FAA takes care of everything for you, including: printing, framing, matting, packaging, insuring, shipping, collecting payments from your buyers, and sending your profits to you each month via PayPal or check.  It’s a no brainer, so check it out.  I feel strongly enough about FAA that I have become an Affiliate, so if you do sign up for an account with them through this link, you’ll help yourself and me too.  http://artistwebsites.com/?affiliateid=G8661

Did You Know? (Rocky Neck is the Spot)

With Spring right around the corner, if you are starting to think about your visit to Cape Ann this summer, think Rocky Neck and reserve your room now at the Rocky Neck Accommodations.  Then you can easily walk over and join us for Sunday morning Mug Up at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery.

Located in the historic Rocky Neck Art Colony on Smith Cove in Gloucester Harbor, it is only a short walk to galleries, shops, restaurants, entertainment, beaches and professional theatre. Good Harbor and Niles beaches are easily accessible as are Gloucester’s museums, monuments, whale watches, fishing trips and island tours. Rocky Neck Accommodations offers 11 distinct room arrangements, each with original (1890) exposed beams, queen or king sized beds, private bath, kitchen facilities, private decks, wireless internet, and water views. On the water at Rocky Neck Accommodations means on the water. A futon or sleep sofa can accommodate an extra person(s) in seven units.

Did You Know? (The Fame of Epes Davis)

That this is grave of Rev. Epes Davis at Mount Adnah Cemetery in Annisquam?  Rev. Davis was a Free-Will Baptist who held services at his house until 1830 when he built a meeting-house, now known as the Annisquam Village Hall and still regularly used for community events and functions.

In addition to being a Baptist minister, Davis was also a shipbuilder in Annisquam, probably most known for building the original schooner Fame.  When the War of 1812 appeared imminent, privateers out of Salem purchased the fast little pinky schooner that had recently been built by Epes Davis in Annisquam. Fame could carry two small cannon and a crew of up to 30. Fame had originally been designed for fishing, so her new owners brought her to Salem and fitted her out to carry the armament and larger crew of a privateer.

The replica of Fame, which was built by Harold Burnham at Burnham Boat Yard in Essex and launched in 2003, first sailed to Gloucester, where her fitting-out continued, and then made her return to Salem on July 12th. On July 25, 2003, she carried passengers from Pickering Wharf for the first time.

Two legacies of the Rev. Epes Davis.

Spring in February

Yesterday was such a glorious day.  We had a very low tide, so I was able to walk from Cambridge Beach to Lighthouse Beach along the shoreline and see things from a perspective I hadn’t seen before.  People were kayaking, walking to the end of the sandbar and sand dollars were exposed along the water’s edge.  All that after a wonderful morning of cameraderie and sharing at Mug Up.  As Joey would say: “This doesn’t suck”.

Did You Know? (Robins)

To many people Robins signal the return of Spring.  Although these days more winter over than they used to, seeing a flock of them in the yard eating berries makes me feel that Spring has made an early return.  Did you know that a young robin has a black beak and a full adult has a yellow beak with just a tip of black at the end of the beak?  The first robin has a definite black beak and therefore appears to be young.

Since I am still on my nuts and berries diet (have lost 17 lbs. but still have 10 to go), like the robins, I got to have some wonderful mixed berries and red grape fruit salad at Mug Up this morning.  Everyone else got to have what’s in the third photo.  I don’t know what it was, and I avoided looking at it any longer than it took to photograph it to avoid temptation.  It was a great Mug Up.  Thanks so much Donna and Rick.

In My Dreams Unrestrained There is No Place I Cannot Go

Since I haven’t  been getting out much now that I am in the throes of a mad creative period which I don’t want to interrupt, I thought I’d share another new piece.  Whenever I go through a creative quantum leap, I always end up leaving this planet for a bit.  This is from my most recent sojourn into the outer realms.  In addition to being a wall art piece, it also serves as a little display shelf for small collectibles (pretty rocks, shells, pieces of meteors, etc.).  This is one of a whole collection of three dimensional pieces where I get to be a designer and constructor of displays as well as a painter.  I am so loving it.  There has to be something in the water here because I am not smoking anything funny – honestly.

Moonrise Over Wingaersheek

I had nothing for today so thought I’d share one of my new glass paintings.  It is the moon rising over Wingaersheek from River Road in Annisquam.

For that special evening on an Italian Cruise

If the heels weren’t so high, I could see Paul Morrison sporting a pair of these at Night on the Neck this summer, if for no other reason than to drive Joey crazy.

Adventure on the Railways

The Adventure organization is beginning 2012 at a rapid pace with our goal to have Adventure sailing in the 2012 Schooner Festival. She will not be completed, just able to sail with crew. On February 13th we plan to be hauled on the South railways at Gloucester Marine Railways starting at 2:30PM. We will then have the masts pulled within the next few days. I will schedule this project as soon as Adventure is on the rails

That will be a photo op! Mayer Tree Service is coming with a 270’ crane to pull 92’ masts out of a vessel 25’ in the air. Wasn’t sure if anyone from GMG, maybe EJ or Kim Smith might be interested. We will be going back in the water while calculations are determined for the engine bed, engine installation, water tight bulkheads , and ballast etc., but will be out again on the North railways the beginning of April to complete this phase.

Good Harbor Sunrise by Skip Montello

Len’s photos on the Feb 7 captured the sunset and the moonrise…here is the sunrise at Good Harbor on the 7th…

“Even a leafless winter tree is strikingly beautiful when set against a Good Harbor Sunrise”

Bird Mancini’s Back

Any of you who came to Nights on the Neck this summer on Rocky Neck in July, August and September, got the great treat of hearing Bird Mancini on Madfish Wharf outside Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery.  I’ve known Ruby Bird and Billie Carl Mancini for a number of years, and they are a great couple and awesome performers.  If you want to hear them again, or for the first time, before this summer when they return to Rocky Neck, come by the Dog Bar at 65 Main Street tonight at 9:00.  You can go to Fred Bodin’s party first and then hop, skip and jump to the Dog Bar for a rockin good time.   Look for Wendie Demuth and yours truly there.

Cape Ann Painters and Photographers Group

Post from Alice Gardner about the next upcoming Cape Ann Painters and Photographers Group.  This is a great group that is really supportive and sharing.  If you are a painter or photographer looking to network, share what you are doing, or just get out of the studio or house in the winter and connect with other likeminded people, you really should come.  EJ

“Since we are about to outgrow the Pleasant Street Tea Company space which Trish and Allison so graciously let us use for the first three meetings, we have changed our meeting space to accommodate more people. Our meeting we will be Monday, February 13 from 9-10:30 AM at
“the Annie” on One Washington Street ( The Old Blackburn Tavern) – entrance on the side.  Henry has offered the space for our meetings . Thank you Henry. We will have Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and some tea  available for everyone. There is free parking in the city lot near the water.

We will continue to have a “check in” so that each person has 3-4 minutes to share how their art is going. E.J. has offered to do a brief presentation on marketing of our art.

Welcome to any new members who are about to join us.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.”

Sincerely, Alice Gardner
