Searts: ART TALK

Kathy Roberts

What Is Your Medium?

My medium is painting, predominantly in watercolor, but I also enjoy experimenting with acrylics/mixed media and alcohol inks.

How long have you been an artist?

I have always been a creative person, experimenting with drawing and painting as a teen

and then taking my first formal watercolor workshop in my late teens where I got hooked and continued studying painting on a weekly basis while raising my family. Many breaks were taken from art while working as a Social Worker and family therapist in the Gloucester community. I’m currently a full time artist where you’ll find me in the “creator incubator,” my home studio and gallery.

Where do you get your inspiration?

There are so many things that influence my art: the changing seasons of New England inspire my landscapes, Gloucester’s seaside community reflects how I portray historic sites, beaches and seascapes which I’ve been very connected to since childhood. I also enjoy the art of the Impressionist Movement.

Weaving memories, traditions, family and my love for nature and food create a blanket of work that embraces who I am.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know?

After a year of isolation, with the news of covid, I felt I needed to plan an event to boost my spirits and bring hope, color and music to my neighborhood. I decided I would have a drive by art show, where people could stay in their cars, wear masks and view my paintings displayed on easels and a clothesline on my front yard! With Carol King music playing in the background many cars came through with the 10th car awarded a print. It was very successful and a lot of fun! I have also enjoyed being an art teacher at GHS and have taught adult & child watercolor classes from my home. Anyone whose interested in visiting my Gallery can call or text for an appointment @978-853-7825. I will have periodic art sales and open houses throughout the year that are open to the public. If you would like to be added to my email list just send me a text.
