THE WRITER’S BLOCK with John J. Ronan

THE WRITER’S BLOCK

with

John J. Ronan

Season Premier October 4, 2018

1623 Studios and Gloucester resident John J. Ronan have announced the 29th season of the television series, The Writer’s Block with John J. Ronan. The award-winning production is one of the oldest, continuously-running public access shows in New England. In 2005, The Writer’s Block was awarded First Prize for an Educational Program Series by the New England Cable Television Association.

Once more, the season starts with a celebration of young writers: the student-poet winners of the spring’s Poetry Without Paper contest, sponsored by the Gloucester Lyceum! Students from elementary, middle, and high school will read and discuss their poems in front of a live audience of family and fans. The program airs Thursday, October 4, 2018, at 8:00 p.m., channel 12, and is repeated week later. All of the year’s shows present interviews with writers and artists of varied backgrounds.

John Ronan, producer and host of The Writer’s Block, is a former Gloucester Poet Laureate and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow in poetry. His most recent book, Taking the Train of Singularity South from Midtown, appeared in 2017. (theRonan.org)

“1623 Studios is a dynamic force for culture on the Cape and we are proud of The Writer’s Block record,” Ronan declares. “Twenty-nine seasons is a long run in any market, at any level. And with the transition of Cape Ann TV to 1623 Studios, this season will be innovative and fresh, our best yet!”

Domestic Pigeon At Maritime Gloucester

Hi Joey,

This little guy showed up at Maritime Gloucester yesterday and is still here today. We’ve managed to give it some water. It has two leg bands, one has the number 4101. We think it is a domesticated pigeon who is lost. We’d love to know how to help it or who might be best to contact. Would you mind putting this out to the community to see if anyone knows who to contact?

Thanks,

Mary F Kay

Replica schooner COLUMBIA off Beauport Hotel 9/2/2018

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

In 1927 the original schooner COLUMBIA was lost with all 22 hands near Sable Island. COLUMBIA had been launched in 1923 in Essex and was on a salt cod trip, likely for Gorton’s, for her previous trip was taken out there. Gorton’s was canning fish cakes – ‘Ready to Fry’, they were called, and there was great demand for such a convenience food. When I went to work for Gorton’s in 1964 ‘Ready to Fry’ was still popular but fish sticks were gaining fast in popularity.

There is a movie at the Cape Ann Museum showing the smiling crew of COLUMBIA as she departs on her fatal trip to the banks.

Also in 1927, at the site of this new hotel, Clarence Birdseye, who came to Gloucester the year COLUMBIA was launched, patented a process for rapid ‘indirect freezing’ of fish. His patents led to the birth of the frozen food industry and to the creation of fish sticks. His company, then General Seafoods, was purchased by Marjorie Merriweather Post, aided by E F Hutton and Goldman Sachs, becoming General Foods. The Birdseye brand today is known worldwide.

Birdseye’s plant stood here until just a few years ago when it was replaced by Beauport. The plant had a distinctive tower that housed an elevator to carry salt cod to the roof for drying in the sun.
