Rockport Public Library, Sawyer Free Library and the Gloucester Genealogy Group present: Michael Brophy, World Renowned Genealogist on Saturday, September 28 from 10:30 to 11:30 am. This event will take place at the Rockport Library located at 17 School Street in Rockport. Registration is required at sawyerfreelibrary.org.
This lecture explains and debunks some of the popular fiction about Genealogy and Family History. Subjects covered include: You can do your whole family history on the internet; The Courthouse burned down and destroyed all the records; I am descended from an Indian; Our name was changed at Ellis Island; Plymouth Plantation myth and reality; All records that you find are accurate and reliable; If my grammie said it was true, it must be true ! You can do your whole family history by using the records of the LDS church. Well researched proof will be presented to explain these myths.
Michael Brophy is a nationally known, professional genealogical researcher, heir search specialist, and lecturer from the Boston area. His currently the President of the Council for the Advancement of Forensic Genealogy (CAFG) and the first Treasurer of the New England of Association of Professional Genealogists. Mike earned an MBA degree from Suffolk University and a BBA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Mike was featured on the TV series Who Do You Think You Are? and the Irish TV series Dead Money, a genealogy show about heir searchers. Mr. Brophy was hired to conduct research for Ancestry.com and several historical authors.
He has lectured on a wide variety of genealogy subjects at the National Genealogy Society’s Annual Conference in 2023, 2022, 2019, 2014, 2012, and The Institute of Genealogy and Historic Research (IGHR). He specializes in New England and Irish genealogy subjects. His genealogy education includes eight certificates from the Institute of Genealogy and Historic Research (IGHR) and certificates in Private Investigation and Advanced Forensic Genealogy from Boston University. He is also a licensed private investigator in Massachusetts.

Join the Sawyer Free Library on Thursday, September 26 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm for an engaging presentation describing recent discoveries and old mysteries surrounding the life and art of Leonard Craske, the sculptor of Gloucester’s iconic Fishermen’s Memorial, Man at the Wheel. James Clark, of Gloucester, will share insights from his research which began in the small town of Annascaul, Ireland. Clark soon developed his research to become the first biography of Craske’s life. It was presented as a signature story of the Gloucester400+ Commemorative Book, Our People, Our Stories.
Mr. Clark and Terry Weber Mangos, Gloucester 400+ Stories Project Leader, have identified many long-forgotten works by Leonard Craske. Please join us at 21 Main Street to learn more about this remarkably creative life and remember an adopted son of Gloucester!

Michael Glabicki & Dirk Miller from Rusted Root in our 360 in-the-round series – This show will take place in the venue, but the musicians will be on the floor for an extra cozy and intimate vibe. There are still tickets available for this show. 7:30pm. Genre: Rock, Jam Band, Singer/Songwriter.

The 100 Women Who Care is an organization committed to helping local Non Profits in our community. 100 women pool in $100 or more and tally up $10,000.00 every quarter and select three Non Profits and them give a 5 minute oral presentation followed up with 5 minutes of questions. Tuesday evening, Vice President-Peter Cannavo and board director/Trainer Adrian Gedney gave their speech on how the money would impact the youth in our community by providing a free safe environment where they can work on self development, humility,respect and hard work. All through a 100 percent volunteer base group of individuals who commit their time to give back to the community. The Gloucester Boxing Club has been serving our community for over 10 years. The Club couldn’t have been happier with the results. The Boxing club will continue to be the cornerstone of this community in developing athletes by taking a holistic approach to boxing all while feeling apart of a brotherhood and sisterhood. | In the past year, our small shelter has faced a challenge we haven’t seen in recent memory: an influx of local dogs and cats flooding our doors. From September 2022-2023, 18% of our total animal intake consisted of local animals. In that same time period this past year, this percentage skyrockets to 30% of our total intake consisting of local animals, meaning this ratio increased a dramatic 66% in one year. Taquito, found as a stray in Lynn with no medical history, is estimated to be around 10 years old. He is receiving a full medical workup from our shelter medicine team before we will be able to consider his adoption. He arrived with dental disease, a grade 3/6 heart murmur, and severe ear damage from long-term infections. In our care, Taquito has already received an echocardiogram from an outside clinic. Going forward, he will need surgery to remove the large amount of scar tissue clogging his ears, and our team is consulting with cardiologists to help him safely undergo anesthesia with his heart condition. Because he is a senior cat, his adoption fee will be reduced to between $0-50. While the reduced fees can help senior animals find homes, it doesn’t even touch the costs that we have incurred taking on his care. |
 | Taquito’s age and future medical needs will be a barrier that will likely delay an adoption, but we are committed to his care for as long as it takes for that to happen. Despite the challenges he faces, Taquito remains affectionate and gentle-going. He spends his days quietly resting on comfy blankets, and he softly leans in to staff and volunteers when given attention. When he is ready, he will be seeking a quiet home where he can enjoy his golden senior years. |
