The Blackburn Challenge measured with Google Maps

So easy to measure distances with the new Google Maps-

The Blackburn Challenge measured with Google Maps-

Here’s how to do it-

Measure and calculate distance

You can measure the distance between two or more points on the map using Google Maps. For example, measure the distance between two cities. The instructions below are different depending on whether you have the new or classic Google Maps.

New Google Maps

To see the distance between points in the new Google Maps, use the right-click menu.

  1. Open the new Google Maps.
  2. Right-click on your starting point.
  3. Click Measure distance.
  4. Click anywhere on the map to create a path you want to measure. Click to add additional measuring points.
  5. [Optional] Drag a point to move it, or click a point to remove it.
  6. Look on the map and under the search box for the total distance.

When done, click the “X” in the card under the search box or right-click on the map and select Clear measurement.

BLACKBURN CHALLENGE THIS SATURDAY: JULY 19, 2014

Posted on July 14, 2014 by Paul Morrison Leave a comment Edit Post

blackburn

You can still race. Registration closes at midnight tomorrow (Tuesday July 15). Do you want to challenge yourself to something not quite ordinary? Jump in a craft powered only by the paddle or oar in your hands and head north from Gloucester High School down the Annisquam then start turning right until you went all the way around and pulled into Gloucester Harbor and aim for the Birdseye plant and the Greasy Pole Finish?

You get a T-Shirt proclaiming your completion as well as pulled pork, beer and a band at Pavilion Beach.

Rubber Duck will be on the halfway-point boat anchored in Straitsmouth Gap to record your number as you go by. Yell the number out since she has very small eyes and no ears.

Sign up now. No walk-ons. Or come out to a viewing area anywhere on the Cape. The times are similar to a marathon. Fast boats make it in two to three hours whereas working dories take five to six hours. Cheer them on.

Here is a handy map. You can check out the list of boats already registers. 245 boats of all kinds, over 370 paddlers or rowers. Click link on this page to see current list of registrants.

Free outdoor movie series in Gloucester next up Raiders of the Lost Ark

Cat Ryan Submits-

… Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?

Raiders of the Lost Ark is coming this Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at I4-C2/65 Rogers Street for the free HarborWalk summer cinema series. Raiders is sponsored in part by Trident Gallerywhich just opened a new Gloucester focused exhibit featuring 18 contemporary artists. Stop in to see Gloucester through their eyes before the movie!

Make sure to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Food, snacks and drinks are available for purchase beginning at 6pm. You can bring a picnic too or eat/order out downtown. Movies begin at dark. In the case of rain or other inclement weather, the movie night will be postponed and will be rescheduled for the following Monday. Postponement announcements will be posted on the City website and HarborWalk Facebook page.

Seagulls, boats, and harbor…Oh My! Here’s more pictures of what you missed at last week’s Wizard of Oz, the first free movie for the HarborWalk Summer Cinema series. All the movies are family friendly classics and Oz was a fitting choice to start the series off! Big shout out to Doyon’s who sponsored Wizard of Oz. The massive screen and classic movie line up are all thanks to Rob Newton’s Cape Ann Community Cinema in partnership with the City of Gloucester’s community development department and the HarborWalk. Senior Planner Matt Coogan is orchestrating this series. Ramping up the scale of community viewing, Cape Ann Community Cinema’s owner, Rob Newton, geared up during the set-up. As you might expect in Gloucester, there was a big community turn out for art! As dusk approached, I stopped counting at 400 people streaming in. Kids played “soccer” with beach balls provided byNORTH SHORE 104.9 radio who emceed the pre-movie time. Radio host Aurelia Nelson and NORTH SHORE 104.9 crew were amiable. You can catch her show Curtain up! with Aurelia Nelson on Sunday mornings at 9AM. Carol Thistle, Senior Project Manager for City of Gloucester coordinated with the radio station. Vendors you may know from Cape Ann Farmer’s Market and/or festival and Downtown Block Party regulars set up nearby and included: Markouk’s specialty bread and sandwiches (grilled right there on their traditional Lebanese saj), Kettle corn, and fried dough. Pop Gallery added to the festive vibe—see some of their recent garb on Joey in this GMG post.

Need more free flicks and fun? Here are a few links for other line-ups (mostly Boston). I think we have the best poster thanks to Chris Muskopf!

Daisy Nell and Schooner Redbird enroute to new home on Cape Ann

About to pass by the Statue of Liberty. Look out Gloucester, here we come in time for the schooner festival_ 30th year this year! Now Stan and I can be in the race again, after selling our old schooner 8 years ago. I’ll still do the commentary on the boulevard for the parade of schooners, while Stan sails Redbird. But I’ll jump aboard for the race. Our size boat competes for the Betty Ramsey trophy, unlike the large schooners racing for the Mayor’s Cup. Stay tuned for more festival details as the summers rolls on toward Labor Day.

Hi there,

I just stumbled on Good Morning Gloucester, and thought I’d add this photo to the collection. My family owned Rockholme for several years, perhaps 1952-1955.  Daniel & Frances Kagno, J.William & Bernice Finkel. This was before the name changed to Shepherd’s Cove, and before it was winterized.  I’m sure I can find better photos. It’s so beautiful now!

Kevin and Kellen On Connemara Bay Fishing Charters Looking For Shark ID Of Shark Caught In Gloucester Harbor

Hey Joe Attached are 2 pics of the shark we caught last week.

Brief:

Last week onboard one of our inshore striped bass charters we stumbled across this shark while fishing with live mackerel for bait. The frightening part of the encounter was that we were up in Gloucester Harbor. We caught a second one that measured slightly over 5 feet long. Can anyone identify this thing?

For Immediate Release

THE CAPE ANN YMCA RECEIVES YOUTH INNOVATION GRANT FROM NORTH SHORE UNITED WAY
Grant supports Y’s effort to tackle the Achievement Gap

Gloucester, MA – The Cape Ann YMCA kicked off its “Summer Advantage program” this week.  The Summer Advantage program is the first recipient of the Youth Innovation Grant from the North Shore United Way.

The “Summer Advantage” program is designed to help high need students improve their reading comprehension during the summer months. The Summer Advantage program will help 20 third grade students in Gloucester and Rockport advance academically through a six-week program taught by certified teachers.  The mornings are spent in a classroom setting at the Temple Ahavat Achim reading, writing, and learning while the afternoons are spent at YMCA Camp Windward which emphasizes physical activities and character development.
“Data from our Y’s 2013 pilot program already shows our efforts can work,” shared Jack Meany, CEO of the YMCA of the North Shore.  He added, “With the incredible generosity of the North Shore United Way and our committed staff, we will continue to see the positive impact of our Achievement Gap programming and strategize how the Y will make a big difference in the next 3-5 years to reduce this gap.”

Statistics show that a large number of children from low-income environments reach kindergarten unprepared and that they continue to fall behind in school without proper interventions. This lag in academic accomplishment, also known as the achievement gap, can plague children in school and impact their long-term future. During the summer months, middle-income kids can gain one month of learning because they are able to afford camps and summer programs, but kids from low-income backgrounds fall behind two months due to lack of affordable summer programs.

In its continued effort to create innovative programs that solve needs for children, adults and seniors, the North Shore United Way is providing grants to encourage promising ideas and creative solutions that move communities forward. Supported by The Tribute Fund in honor of past North Shore United Way leaders, the Youth Innovation Grant will assist the Cape Ann YMCA in its effort to prepare and support children and youth by offering programs that increase their cognitive, emotional and physical development throughout the summer months. In addition to the generosity of the North Shore United Way, the Y has secured other private donations and in kind support from the Cape Ann community.

Margo Casey, Executive Director of the North Shore United Way said, “This grant supports new and evolving approaches to preparing and supporting children as they learn and grow. I expect these programs to have a profound effect on addressing achievement gaps from summer learning loss faced by children from low-income families.”

The Summer Advantage Program takes place Monday-Friday 9:00am-4:00pm from July 7th-August 15th. To schedule a visit or for follow up:

New Show On Cape Ann TV

Hi Joey,

I hope you’re doing well. I just finished production on a new show here at CATV called On the Waterfront. The concept is to take an in-depth look at the Cape Ann ecosystem, highlighting the people and businesses that rely on the ocean for survival. Shep Means is the host of the show and the first episode features the lifecycle of the clam. We go digging on the clam flats for soft shells, the beach for sea clams, weigh them up at Essex Shellfish, shuck em’ and package them at Intershell, and fry and eat them at Woodman’s. Future episodes will follow a similar format but feature lobsters, mussels, oysters, fish, etc.

I’d love it if you could take a look and please post it to GMG. I hope you like it!

Thanks and have a great weekend,

Day One With The Chiropractor- Elizabeth Bish

DSC06456

So those that know me know I’m not a fan of going to the doctor’s office.  It’s not that I don’t respect doctors or know they do good work, it’s just that 95% of the time you go in with a nasty head cold you go out knowing exactly what you knew before you went in- there’s no cure for the common cold.

Further, those of you who know me know that I’m pretty well busted up from years and years of pretty intense physical labor down here at the dock.  Last year immobilized and brought to the hospital for excruciating back pain, messed up shoulders, legs, feet, you name it.

Well this last episode of back pain which I’ve been working through with ice and ibuprofen has got my close friends and family begging me to make a doctor’s appointment to try to get me some help.  My good buddy Eric Lorden raved about his chiropractor Elizabeth Bish who has an office which faces the DogBar parking lot underneath Café Bishco.

He and Toby Pett nagged and nagged and nagged and I ignored the both of them.  Then one day I got an unexpected call from Elizabeth Bish asking me to set up an appointment.  Frustrated with my back pain I agreed and we set it up.

Well yesterday morning I went in, filled out the paperwork and went through the standard list of questions you get whenever you’re a new patient at any medical facility.

Then we get down to business. This lady- Elizabeth who is a very attractive lady I’m guessing in her late 40s and weighing about 95lbs soaking wet gets up on me, flips me around a bit tells me to relax and take a deep breath and as soon as I relax lays down a thunder of god suplex which cracks my spine which made a sound so loud I’m thinking the people upstairs at Café Bishco must have thought the the big oak in the parking lot at Dog Bar was gonna come thundering down through the side window.

Next she gently cradles my head in her hands and softly sways it form side to side telling me to relax and take a deep breath, now exhale and then yet again KABLAMMIE, a monster neck twist that managed to get multiple cracks and again on the other side of my neck.  Not gonna lie I thought I was gonna shit my pants at that spit second because I thought my neck literally might have snapped off and I’d be paralyzed but after standing up and walking around my entire back and neck which had severe limited movement felt clearly looser and the range of motion was greatly improved.

I went in skeptical, I walked out feeling much better and a believer.  Looking forward to the next visit and I’ll be sure to report back to you the results.

Thanks Elizabeth
