COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
The City of Gloucester is updating its plan for how to use federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. These federal dollars currently support many important programs in Gloucester like:
– – The City’s housing rehab program
– First time homebuyer training
– The Grace Center
– The Open Door
Affordable housing
– Small business loans
– Sidewalk improvements
– Park improvements
And more!
We want to hear your ideas and hope you’ll come to one of our public hearings.
– Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the Open Door, 28 Emerson Avenue, Gloucester, MA. Refreshments will be served.
– Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. at the Willowood Community Building (upper level), 40 Willowood Road, Gloucester, MA. Pizza and refreshments will be served.

Veteran’s Day From Virginia McKinnon
Hi Joey, I have a Veteran’s Day story to share with your readers.

My husband, Robert McKinnon, celebrated his 90th Birthday on Halloween with a
gala party at the Gloucester House.

My skipper stated “Bob, if you help me take this LCT (Landing Craft Transport} back to the states, I will have you assigned a rank of Chief Petty Officer.’” I replied “No way, I have my points for discharge and I am going home.” WW2 ended in September 1945, my time was up in February 1946. I was jumping around the Asiatic Pacific from the Philippines, Hawaii, Gilbert and Mariana Islands. I was in the US Navy stationed as a Motor Machinist Mate Second Class on LCTs and LSTs landing troops and supplies for the battles of Saipan and Tarawa. Witnessing many casualties, so many of my shipmates gone, I never believed I would ever be going home. Never to see my family and Gloucester again.
My journey home was uneventful. As I looked around the Navy ship I was aware of the many enlisted men that did not survive the war and would never be going home. I had witnessed thousands of Marines, Navy, Army and Seabees lost in battle.
Arriving in San Francisco, I was informed my formal discharge would take about a week and I would have to wait in the Fargo Building for my disability and pay. Not willing to wait, I took the first train across country. Very little money for my journey home. In the dining car, I soon ran out of money. I would request a cup of hot water adding ketchup and I would look for a few crackers to sustain me.
Arriving in Gloucester, no one was at the depot to greet me. I carried by back pack and walked home. Savoring every step as I looked at my beautiful Gloucester. In my absence my family moved from Washington Square to Western Avenue, just across the street from the Fishermen’s statue. My mother had suffered a stroke. Before I enlisted I remember her singing to me “I did not raise my son to be a solider, I raised him to be my pride and joy.” Her oldest son, my half-brother, Buster” was stationed in Pearl Harbor at the time of the Attack. I, her youngest, was away for four years, more worry than my mother could endure. There was no “welcome home party.” My dad had a job waiting for me at his machine shop, Independent Machine Company, as a diesel machinist, repairing the engines on of the many fishing boats. I was so happy and fortunate to be employed.
All my buddies survived World War II. Our reunions were happy times at Good Harbor Beach and at the YMCA. Just walking the boulevard now had special meaning of comrades together again, survivors of World War II and now part of the greatest generation in the history of our country.

The restoration of the Phyllis A
Hi Joey,
The restoration of the Phyllis A continues in earnest at Gloucester Marine Railway. This week the iconic red pilot house, spars, and engine were removed. She is being lightened up before coming off the rails and then picked up on the big blue travel lift. There is a spot waiting for the Phyllis A in the parking lot, so she can have more extensive work done without tying up the railway. We are actively seeking volunteers to help with her restoration and to help with mailing and other office type work too. Please come by the Steel Drive behind Fosters on Saturday 8-4 to help support the Phyllis A’s restoration, while getting rid of your unwanted steel.

ADDISON GILBERT HOSPITAL Announces $75,000 Grant
Funds will support capital equipment, help match Dusky Leadership Challenge
On the heels of being awarded a $1.2 million Health Policy Commission CHART grant to build on the successful implementation of its High Risk Intervention team, Addison Gilbert Hospital (AGH) has been awarded a $75,000 capital grant from an anonymous Boston-based foundation. The grant will support capital enhancements and new equipment to improve care for patients and increase clinical excellence in the Cape Ann community.
“As a not-for-profit hospital, Addison Gilbert depends upon contributions like this to invest in our hospital and deliver services to keep our community healthy,” said Cindy Cafasso Donaldson, Vice President, Addison Gilbert Hospital. “We deeply appreciate the philanthropic support that keeps our hospital thriving. This generosity will ensure AGH stays at the forefront of medical care for local patients and residents of Cape Ann.”
The grant is also helping the hospital reach the $350,000 Dusky Leadership Challenge set forth earlier this year by Linzee Coolidge, a trustee of the Dusky Foundation. The Dusky Leadership Challenge raises money for AGH in to invest in new equipment, technologies and programs that will help it keep pace with a rapidly changing health care landscape.
In February, Mr. Coolidge, made an initial $350,000 gift and challenged the community to match it through contributions. The goal of the Dusky Challenge is to raise money for Addison Gilbert Hospital and to encourage leaders from the community to support the hospital.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Boston-based foundation for this grant,” said Rebecca Imperiali, Vice President of Philanthropy at Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals. “It is through the generosity of organizations and individuals in the community, just like this, that AGH has been so successful. The Dusky Leadership Challenge has been a compelling tool for encouraging and inspiring additional contributions for the capital and clinical needs of Addison Gilbert Hospital.”
