One of the nice things about being in Gloucester is all the fresh seafood. Grabbed some Lobsters from Joey C at Captain Joes and then headed over to Compass to see PJ for a nice 210# Blue Fin Tuna. All for the menu tonight.

Hey JC!
Put together a little survey for an idea that’s been banging around for a while regarding Co-working. For those who are unfamiliar, these are spaces where people who typically work from home can go for a few hours or the day and have desk-space, wifi, printing and that sort of thing without running out that one cup of coffee they bought at the Cafe three hours ago (but people better keep going to cafes, dammit!).
Also good for meeting, conference calls, presentations, night classes, book clubs, that sort of thing.
There are a lot of ways to execute this idea, there is no space chosen yet or anything, we’re just getting the community together first, to gauge if there is enough support.
So we’d love to get a little feedback through this five minute survey. If you’d post it, this would continue the awesome. As always, you rule, etc. –Jim Dowd

First Time I’ve Seen One Of These In Action. It went along at a pretty good clip and very stable-
Tuesday, June 7th, Patrick Thorpe, President and CEO of BankGloucester, announced the winners of the bank’s ninth annual “Banking for the Community” program and presented checks to them during a celebratory reception at the bank on Main Street in Gloucester.
With over 6,000 votes cast by the public, the ninth annual “Banking for the Community” program was a tremendous success. The program awarded 19 organizations a combined total of $20,000. BankGloucester would like to thank the members of the community whose votes determined how the funds were distributed. Votes were cast through the bank’s website at www.BankGloucester.com or via paper ballot at the Gloucester and Essex locations of the bank.
There were eighteen organizations featured on the ballot, and write-ins were welcomed. The organization receiving the most votes was Cape Ann Animal Aid which received a check for $5,000. Open Door Food Pantry and Care Dimensions finished second and third respectively and received $3,000 each. The Rose Baker Senior Center and HAWC each received a check for $1,000 for coming in fourth and fifth place. Family Promise North Shore and Day by Day Adult Care both write-in’s, each received $500 along with the following 12 organizations: Grace Center, Wellsping, Old Farm Rockport, Gloucester Education Foundation, Saint Vincent De Paul, Sawyer Free Library, Action, Inc, North Shore Health Project, North Shore Art Association, Essex Senior Center/Council on Aging, Education Foundation Rockport, Magnolia Library.

JUNE 22, 2016 ~ BACKYARDGROWERSGLOUCESTER
Ryan, Fernando, and Sarah stand proudly in front of their garden.
Fernando, his wife Raquel, and their two children Ryan and Sarah are participants in the 2016 Backyard Garden Program. Raquel and Fernando are originally from Brazil, and they heard about our program when they volunteered to translate our program application into Portuguese.
When asked about his experience with their garden, Fernando said that “it’s getting the kids to eat healthier and showing them where their food comes from”. His daughter Sarah, when asked what her favorite thing to do in the garden was, said she “likes watering, because it makes the plants grow”.
Fernando said that there isn’t one day where the whole family doesn’t go out to the garden to see what had changed from the day before. Often when Fernando is in the garden his young son Ryan comes to help out. Fernando noted that both Sarah and Ryan “are impressed that they’re growing things they can eat” and laughed when he recalled all the times Sarah would ask, “Dad what is this, can you eat this!?”.
Not only does their immediate family love this garden, but Raquel’s mother, a McPherson Park resident, plants in the BYG managed McPherson Park Community Garden. Often Sarah’s grandmother and her can be found out in the garden watering and harvesting, and Fernando said that the garden is therapeutic for his mother-in-law. As a chef Fernando has loved having the fresh produce and herbs for his cooking, and mentioned that he has had the chance to explain to Sarah and Ryan that sometimes they make salads with multiple types of lettuce. Not only that, but because they have their own garden they have had the opportunity to plant some things from Brazil that they can’t find in stores in the area, and Fernando’s mother-in-law has been able to use that produce in cooking traditional dishes that they missed.
When asked what this garden means to him and his family, Fernando said “it’s another chance for us to do things together, and it’s strengthening our family”.

North Shore Arts Association: American writer, artist and philosopher E. Hubbard said “Art is not a thing, it is a way.” The historic North Shore Arts Association of Gloucester celebrating its 94th year, reflects this philosophy with its “Art in Action – Connecting Communities” focus this season, by hosting a groundbreaking collaboration with Gloucester’s marine conservation/research group Ocean Alliance, now headquartered in Gloucester’s iconic Paint Factory, and historic Rocky Neck Art Colony. Supporting the Ocean Alliance mission to protect and preserve our oceans and marine life and North Shore Arts Association and Rocky Neck Art Colony’s mission of supporting the arts, an “Art Exhibition of the Sea and Science” will be on display June 17 through July 30 in the galleries of NSAA. Although works of all genres will be on display, the main focus will be works depicting the sea and Cape Ann. A very unique component of the exhibition will be a show and silent auction of works painted on old roofing slates removed from the historic Paint Factory building. These historic slates donated to NSAA by non-profit Ocean Alliance provide the substrate used by NSAA Artist Members to create original paintings, each approximately 12″x24″ depicting a myriad images. Bids for the silent auction may be placed June 17 through July 30 by visiting or contacting NSAA. One hundred per cent of silent auction proceeds will go to fund the ongoing restoration of the NSAA’s gallery building and Ocean Alliance’s Paint Factory headquarters. The collaboration also offers an extraordinary series of Ocean Alliance and Rocky Neck Art Colony lectures and performances. This special programing was made possible through partial funding by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The first of the series will be marine conservation/research group Ocean Alliance presenting a lecture “Why Whales?” by CEO Dr. Iain Kerr on Sunday, June 26th, 12:30-1:30pm followed by a reception, open free to the public 2-4pm. A dynamic performance/poetry reading, “Sea Change: Reversing the Tide” will be presented by President of Ocean Alliance Dr. Roger Payne – whose profound discovery of whale songs has been a major force in their protection – and his wife, noted British actress Lisa Harrow on Thursday, July 7th at 7pm. Rocky Neck Art Colony President and arts and marine conservation advocate Karen Ristuben will present a lecture “Intersection of Marine Science, Conservation, Activism and Art on Saturday, July 23rd 3pm. All lectures and performances are free with a suggested donation of $5. To learn more about these three iconic non-profits visithttp://www.nsarts.org, http://www.whale.org and rockyneckartcolony.org.

The main point of this post is that there is no time like the present to enjoy life. Secondarily, if you are able to help someone less fortunate than yourself while enjoying a slice of life, then take the opportunity to do so. (see golf tournament info, below).
Though I was fortunate to enjoy a delicious Father’s Day breakfast and great company with my family at Lobsta Land (thanks, Dad!), this annual holiday has more recently been tinged with a level of sadness that underscores the miracle of life and the importance of taking the time to enjoy it to its fullest.
Five years ago, on January 6, 2012 my dear friend Aran Patrican tragically succumbed to a viral disease that attacked his heart just two weeks after his only son, Thomas, celebrated his first birthday. At the time, we knew Aran had been dealing with a stubborn seasonal cold, but he carried on as usual, kept reporting to work as a Gloucester Police officer. Otherwise, his spirits were up during this holiday season and he reveled in his new role as a doting father. By the time he realized the severity of the illness it was too late. Since that time there has been a void left in the lives of the many who knew and loved him.
Thomas, now five and a half, is bright and happy and has thrived in the loving home of his mother and older sister Sophia, but he will not have the benefit of being nurtured in the presence of his father’s generous wisdom, tremendous wit, and warm heart. It is for this reason that — getting back to my opening points — I’m asking you to participate for fun, competition, and quality time with friends in the Aran/Ryan Patrican Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit Thomas’ future.
Every year since Aran’s passing I have worked with a close group of friends to raise money to help support the future of Aran’s son, Thomas. Please complete the following form to ensure that you reserve a spot for your foursome in the Fifth Annual Aran/Ryan Patrican Memorial Golf Tournament which will take place on Monday, July 18th at the Beverly Golf and Tennis Club.
This golf tourney, coupled with the annual early June hockey tournament (special thanks this year to Mike Hale, Eric McNiff, Tony “Legend” Frontiero, Will Brown, and all that turned out for a great night of hockey earlier this month) is helping to build a scholarship fund for young Thomas. Our goal is to continue raising money that Aran’s son will use to fund his education after he graduates high school.
If you are able to play, as a single or with a group, I look forward to seeing you on the links having a great time — again, see contact info below. If unable to make it this year, please be sure to take a moment to reflect on the good that life has to offer.
Thanks,
JD Perry
