October 14 Meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club

October 2, 2016 ~ Michael Deneen

blogpic

At this month’s meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club, Friday October 14, 8:00 pm at the Lanesville Community Center, we’re lucky enough to have our very own Mario Motta with a presentation on his latest science project, an investigation of a white dwarf star (WD 1145+017) in Virgo that is orbited by the remains of a disintegrating small planet or asteroid.

This is the star that was thought by some to have an alien mega structure around it, because of its very strange patterns of dimming and brightening. Alas, no aliens that we can see, but the truth is almost as interesting; the star seems to be tearing apart a small planet, leaving multiple small planetesimals and cometary trails in its wake. The destruction of an actual planet is bound to lead to a really enthralling tale, and this one has the benefit of being true.

Mario’s been following and charting this phenomenon, and is going to share the process and the results with us on the 14th. It’s always fun to have GAAC speakers who can report first-hand on actual astronomical events, and our October 2016 meeting will be one of those rare nights. This will be an evening of astronomy, decaf, good snacks and great conversation. Don’t miss this one!

GAAC meets at 8:00 pm on the second Friday of every month except August at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street in Lanesville. All are welcome; you don’t need any special knowledge to have a great time. There are no dues or fees, and off-street parking is free as well. For more information see the club Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/GAACpage, the website at http://gaac.us, or follow us on Twitter, @GAACster.

Can you describe for someone that doesn’t know, what are the types of things you do as an agent other than the obvious- negotiating contracts?
I’d say there are like a million kids that go to college and they want to be sports agents.  Glamorous, right?  So there has to be a tremendous amount of competition as an agent getting athletes to sign with you.  How do you reach out and let players know that you are available and convince them they should sign with you?
I can’t imagine the amount of pressure you would feel negotiating a contract for an athlete when you come to a crossroad with a team and try to push the line but not lose the deal.  Your stress level must be completely out of control.

All Home Care is NOT Created Equal

More Cape Ann Wellness News-

ABC Home Healthcare's avatarCape Ann Wellness

People age 65 and over now make up the majority of the population in the United States. We are living longer and the majority of seniors choose to do so in the comfort of home, also referred to as “Aging in Place”. It comes as no surprise that with the senior market growing, businesses geared to seniors are also on the rise, including tremendous growth in the home care industry. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the Senior-Care Business Booms for Franchisers (August 10, 2016).

Businesses competing for the same market share often benefits us as consumers by providing us with more options. Home care doesn’t necessarily follow that rule because it’s not truly an “apples to apples” comparison. Massachusetts and the Federal government DO NOT regulate private home care agencies UNLESS the agency has contract(s) with Elder Services. Agencies, including ABC Home Healthcare Professionals that have these contracts…

Gloucester Dog Park Event – Halloween

October 2, 2016 ~ Joey C

Hi Joey,

I just started a Meet-Up group called “Pomeranian People” and our first meet-up will be at the Gloucester Dog Park Halloween Photo Shoot, Costume & Agility Contest. I would appreciate it so much if you could spread the word about the Dog Park event in hopes of support of the dog park, but also anyone who is looking for a Pomeranian clan of friends… LOL.

I felt not many people knew about last years event, and if people are aware in advance I believe the turn out will be awesome. Last year together we raised a lot of money for the Gloucester Dog Park’s Annual Budget, which includes the doggy bags supplied at the park, mowing and maintenance of the grounds- which is always great news for the dogs.

This seriously awesome event is possible, because of the donations businesses and people make. There are winners for the contests and actually great gifts given to those winners. Last Years Prizes included….

GIFT CARDS GRACIOUSLY DONATED BY TD BANK NORTH IN GLOUCESTER.
GIFT BASKET DONATED BY ESSEX PET SHOP & BIRD SUPPLY
GIFT BASKET DONATED BY PETCO IN GLOUCESTER.
GIFT BASKET DONATED BY ANIMAL KRACKERS.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT THIS 2016 EVENT, YOU CAN DO SO ONLINE AT WWW.GLOUCESTERDOGPARK.ORG OR SEND CHECKS TO THE GLOUCESTER FUND, 45 MIDDLE STREET, GLOUCESTER, MA 01930..AND WRITE THE GLOUCESTER DOG PARK IN THE MEMO LINE. THANK YOU!!

September 29, 2016 ~ trixy546

needymeds-slide-20161013-01

SeniorCare Inc. will host a presentation by Richard J. Sagall, M.D. regarding the difficulties many people face when trying to pay for their medications and options to explore to help on Thursday, October 13, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the SeniorCare offices located at 49 Blackburn Center in Gloucester, MA.

Dr. Richard M. Sagall received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo. After completing his family practice residency at the Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, ME, he practiced family medicine and occupational medicine there for nearly 20 years. During that time he began NeedyMeds. Dr. Sagall has written articles on assistance programs and occupational medicine topics for a number of publications. He has given presentations on patient assistance programs and occupational medicine throughout the country.

There is no charge for the workshop.  For information and to reserve your space, contact Tracy Arabian at SeniorCare Inc. at 978-281-1750 x-508 or tracy.arabian@seniorcareinc.org.
