Alicia Unleashed: No Surrender. A Previvor’s tale with Eva Silverman

Here’s the reality: about 1 in 400 women carry a BRCA gene mutation, but their lifetime risk of breast cancer can skyrocket up to 60 to 70 percent — compared to just 12.5 percent in the general population. And it doesn’t wait until old age. Many women under 50 — some in their 30s, even their 20s — are already facing tough, life-changing choices about surgeries, screenings, and their future.

They are called previvors — women who are taking control of their health before cancer has a chance to strike. In this episode, they are speaking with Eva Silverman, she’s a Riot Girl from New Jersey by way of Oakland and discuss what it means to live with the gene, the emotional and medical challenges behind every decision, and how awareness can quite literally save lives and what it’s like to be one bad ass taking charge doing so.

She talks about having procedures to lower her risks of getting cancers that come along with the gene mutation. You may be surprised it’s not just breast cancer that comes with the BRCA gene!

Trigger warning: they’ll be sharing details about anatomy and mental health. Please listen with care and know you’re not alone in this conversation. They will share resources and practical steps you can take right now to protect your health and support the people you love.

This episode could save a life. Maybe even yours.

(We’re not medical professionals, and this content is not a substitute for medical advice.)

Picture this: you’re driving to your boyfriend’s house on the Fourth of July weekend when the phone rings. It’s your doctor — and you already know what’s coming. “You have breast cancer.” You’ve been diligent about mammograms since your early 30s — years before the recommended age of 40 — only to discover you have two types of breast cancer.

That’s the reality our guests faced. In Episode 127, B-Side sits down with our own Alicia Cox and Mix 104.1’s Kennedy Elsey as they open up about their diagnoses, their recoveries, and the journeys in between.

A special thank-you to Quincy’s own Annie Dow for recording our opener, sharing the facts, and giving important trigger warnings.

Kennedy and Alicia talk about the moment they found out, the decision to go public, the ups and downs of treatment, and how they’re doing now.

⚠️ Trigger Warning: This episode includes discussion of anatomy, mental health, suicidal thoughts, and body-related topics.

Bowling for Breath

As many of you have seen on Facebook Kathy Ernest is a double lung transplant recipient. She is also our very own BSide’s mom. Kathy and her family and friends raised thousands of dollars to help medical costs back in 2020 prior to her surgery through an organization that was to help patients with costs.

In April 2024 that organization closed abruptly with no notice to its patients and leaving money that was donated to patients unaccounted for.

Kathy is now facing Lung and Kidney failure and now facing more medical costs.

BSide and her family are now faced with fundraising the money they lost all over again. With that a Bowling Tournament is being held on June 23rd at Cape Ann Lanes from 5-7pm to help raise funds for Kathy.

If interested, you can enter “Bowling for Breath” on Facebook or TeamKathyGal for more information.
