The lion’s mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata) is one of the largest known species of jellyfish. Its range is confined to cold, boreal waters of the Arctic, northern Atlantic, and northern Pacific Oceans. It is common in the English ChannelIrish SeaNorth Sea, and in western Scandinavian waters south to Kattegat and Øresund. It may also drift into the southwestern part of the Baltic Sea (where it cannot breed due to the low salinity). Similar jellyfish – which may be the same species – are known to inhabit seas near Australia and New Zealand. The largest recorded specimen was measured off the coast of Massachusetts in 1865 and had a bell with a diameter of 210 centimetres (7 feet) and tentacles around 36.6 m (120 ft) long.[2] Lion’s mane jellyfish have been observed below 42°N latitude for some time in the larger bays of the East Coast of the United States.

Gloucester Launches Kindness Campaign to Celebrate Community Spirit

Kindness brews community—and it could earn someone a mug!

The City of Gloucester is proud to launch a new Kindness Campaign encouraging residents to share meaningful acts of kindness happening across the community. From July 1 through October 31, 2025, residents are invited to submit stories about thoughtful gestures they’ve witnessed or experienced—particularly those that reflect Gloucester’s long-standing tradition of neighbors helping neighbors.

Stories will be shared and highlighted publicly. The person who carried out the kind act will be recognized with a special mug featuring the campaign’s message: “Kindness is the flag we all reach for.”

“Our goal is to shine a light on the quiet, generous moments that often go unseen, but truly define who we are as a community,” said Mayor Greg Verga. “Whether it’s a helping hand, a kind word, or a supportive gesture, these stories deserve to be shared.”

Submissions will be accepted through October 31, 2025.

Captain’s Compass Bar at Yankee Clipper Inn

Our sister and brother in law visited recently and stayed in the Bulfinch House at Yankee Clipper Inn. We decided to check out the Captain’s Compass Bar on the grounds of the Yankee Clipper Inn on Granite Street in Rockport. They were super pleased with their experience there and we enjoyed an afternoon of drinks and snacks on the lawn. The bar is open summer weekends only Friday 4-8 PM; Sat and Sun 2-8 PM. Drinks and snacks are available from friendly efficient servers such as Cam. Pictured here you see prosecco, mojito, turkey panini, cheese and fruit plate and quesadilla. It was just right for the afternoon we were there visiting. Jim and I will plan to go back and take friends!
