Dinner at The Burn

We had a really delicious dinner at The Burn last night. Yesterday was opening day….and they’ll continue to open at 11:00 each day. During the day I was thinking about how nice it would have been to pay them a visit so I’m glad it worked out later in the evening. After a day of work, a late afternoon boat ride down the Annisquam into Ipswich Bay, and some great reggae music on the rooftop of the Beauport, we went to The Burn and were so happy to land some seats at the bar and eat a delicious dinner. A few of us tried their Rice Bowls (I opted for no protein….pictured below….but, my friends had chicken and shrimp and the portions were impressive for sure), one ordered the Grilled Shrimp Skewers, and another ate the Buffalo Chicken Dip. All were tremendous! Congratulations to their team for a job very well done and no doubt some fantastic success going forward! Get on over there. The Burn 289 Main Street, Gloucester

Don’t Miss Tuesday Schooner Challenges!

Despite the rainy launch last week, the weekly Tuesday Schooner Challenge kicked off from Maritime Gloucester. We were aboard the Isabella with Amanda, Rica and Tucker. Another goup was aboard Ardelle with Capt Burnham in his reenactment regalia. The point is to give the interns an opportunity to deal with customers as well as gain some sailing experience during the race challenge. I think it’s a great idea and opportunity for people like me to help with the education of future mariners as well as get some behind the scenes insight ourselves. I assure you, we had fun even though we got a bit wet. You see the most interesting things going on out in our harbor! You can book tickets online at Maritime Gloucester (**tip and reward for those of you reading to the end….check for a coupon code for a discount**)

Bunker Hill Reenactment — pat morss

This is my view of the 250th anniversary Reenactment of the Battle of Bunker Hill that took place at Gloucester’s Stage Fort Park last weekend. There were nearly 20,000 estimated visitors counting the two days.

The Colonists were positioned at the top of the hill, above the British charge.
Reenactors numbered about 750. Mass. State Senator Bruce Tarr is at bottom left.
Colonial reenactors practicing, culminating 5 years of planning.
British reenactors in uniform, gathering outside their weekend tents.
The first action was British Marines leaving their vessels in Gloucester Harbor.
And landing on Half Moon Beach, in Stage Fort Park.
While Colonial snipers fired from the woods on the left shore.
And from the old fort on the right shore.
The Colonists heard inspirational words of encouragement, read from historical text.
And were ready to stand their ground.
After the Flanking Attack (bodies remaining) came the Main Assault by the British.
They were repelled by the Colonists who were behind their hay and dirt earthworks.
British cannons pounded back.
After reinforcements arrived, the British stormed the hill a second time.
And were forced to retreat again, where the officers planned their next move.
All Redcoats front and center.
It was straight up the hill once more, through the gun and canon smoke.
This time with superior numbers, and the Colonists running out of ammunition, the British prevailed.

At Bunker Hill in 1775 the Colonial casualties were 140 killed and 271 wounded, whereas the British suffered 226 killed and 828 wounded. The battle was a loss, but a moral victory for the Revolutionaries.

In response to Alicia Cox’ preposterous blog post asking GMG readers if lettuce belongs on lobster rolls I’ll simply leave these photos from people that obviously are not idiots- The Fortnins.

See? The Fortnin family are a sane, rational, god fearing ‘Merican family that knows not to fuck up a lobster roll with anything but a split top roll, toasted or grilled with lobster meat and butter or mayo. That’s it. End of story. Spare me any stupid questions Alicia.

Thank god for the Fortnin family and common sense.
