Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of many cannabinoid compounds found in cannabis. It does not appear to alter consciousness or trigger a “high.” A recent surge in scientific publications has found preclinical and clinical evidence documenting value for CBD in some neuropsychiatric disorders, including epilepsy, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Evidence points toward a calming effect for CBD in the central nervous system. Interest in CBD as a treatment of a wide range of disorders has exploded, yet few clinical studies of CBD exist in the psychiatric literature.
Objective
To determine whether CBD helps improve sleep and/or anxiety in a clinical population.
Design
A large retrospective case series at a psychiatric clinic involving clinical application of CBD for anxiety and sleep complaints as an adjunct to usual treatment. The retrospective chart review included monthly documentation of anxiety and sleep quality in 103 adult patients.
Main Outcome Measures
Sleep and anxiety scores, using validated instruments, at baseline and after CBD treatment.
Results
The final sample consisted of 72 adults presenting with primary concerns of anxiety (n = 47) or poor sleep (n = 25). Anxiety scores decreased within the first month in 57 patients (79.2%) and remained decreased during the study duration. Sleep scores improved within the first month in 48 patients (66.7%) but fluctuated over time. In this chart review, CBD was well tolerated in all but 3 patients.
Conclusion
Cannabidiol may hold benefit for anxiety-related disorders. Controlled clinical studies are needed.

It was fun to watch the GHS sail team out on the water on a windy afternoon recently. The sailboats seemed to skim across the water effortlessly but I know better than that. Some color out there was a sight for sore eyes. Another sign of spring.

Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department extinguished a kitchen fire in an apartment complex Thursday afternoon.
On Thursday, April 17, at about 12:29 p.m., Gloucester Fire was dispatched to 1110 Heights at Cape Ann for reports of a fire in the kitchen of an apartment.
Responding crews observed smoke showing from the side of the apartment building and took immediate action to knock the fire down. Crews were able to extinguish the bulk of the fire using a water can.
The fire was completely knocked down by 12:40 p.m. Crews remained on scene to ventilate the building and ensure the fire had not spread. A building inspector also arrived on scene for further examination.
Pets were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and were returned to their owners. No other injuries were reported.
Beauport Fire provided mutual aid on the scene, while Rockport Fire provided station coverage.
Gloucester Fire determined the cause of the fire to be accidental.

“Hey Joe, I got a great topic for you. What do we do with the Shrink wrap every year? It drives me nuts. I want to recycle it somehow. Good little topic for you. Hopefully you know the answer. Thank you for all your hard work. Awesome stuff.”
I’ll do some digging Joe and get some answers.
I asked Jamie Mathison and she pointed me in the right direction:

How does it work?
Seaside Sustainability is partnering with Dynamic Waste to distribute dumpster bins to different locations in the Cape Ann area so boaters can bring their shrink wrap to be recycled. The bins are accessible to the public during normal business hours throughout the week and the program is free and open to boat owners everywhere, no marina membership required. This program will run annually in Gloucester, Manchester, Essex, and Rockport from April to June. The plastic has to be free of foreign material (dirt, sand, trash, wooden supports, plastic vents) and rolled neatly before being placed in the dumpster bins.Dynamic Waste is committed to sustainability and diverting waste from landfills. It invests in our environment by ensuring the safe, practical, and economic recycling of many different types of waste.

On Wednesday Rick and I went to the Beauport Hotel for a delicious lunch. After lunch had to go do some errands and since it was not raining, we walked. The flowers from Generous Gardeners at the police station are looking pretty. Generous Gardeners does such a great job, and we thank them. Walking around St. Peter’s Square with the boats and lobster traps were getting ready for the summer.

Want to help feed local people this summer? The Open Door Empty Bowl Enchanted Forest and Online Artists’ Bowls Auction, which benefit summer hunger-relief programs, offer a way for anyone to donate or volunteer.
Empty Bowl Enchanted Forest will be held on Thursday, May 1 from 4-7 p.m. at Cruiseport Gloucester. Pay-what-you-can tickets and the Online Artists Bowls Auction are available at FOODPANTRY.org.
With inflation and looming cuts to social services agencies, the fundraiser comes at a critical moment for food security.
“As we prepare for significant cuts to the federal safety net, more children are at risk of going hungry, especially during the months they are not in school,” said Julie LaFontaine, President and CEO. “We invite the community to join us for an event to remember what we hold in common and to raise critical funds for our summer programs including Summer Meals, Mobile Market, and Food Pantries.”
The Greater Boston Food Bank estimates that, without state intervention, proposed federal cuts and changes to SNAP, TEFAP (USDA), and school meals will lead to a 77% increase in demand at local food pantries like The Open Door.
Last year, The Open Door distributed 2.35 million pounds of food to 11,893 people through its Food Pantries. The nonprofit met a 30% increase in requests for food assistance in 2024, through 100,774 visits.
The Open Door distributed more than 18,000 breakfast and lunch meals to local children during the summer of 2024. The nonprofit also distributed more than 169,000 pounds of food through its Mobile Market.
Attendees of Empty Bowl Enchanted Forest will choose a bowl hand-painted by a member of the community, soup to-go, cookie, roll, fruit, and water. A soup tasting will also allow participants to try a handful of soups prepared by The Open Door kitchen. Additional soups will be available to-go by a handful of local restaurants, caterers, and eateries.
The artists’ bowls will be available to view at Empty Bowl Enchanted Forest, and a select few are featured at Cape Ann Savings Bank on Main Street in Gloucester leading up to the event. The online artists’ bowls auction features bowls painted by numerous, talented local artists.

These impressive fellas were strutting their stuff the other day….and were none too eager to let me pass by.

My friend and FOB Susan L sent me these beautiful photos of our reward for April showers: rainbows! Seems appropriate for Good Friday and the start of the Easter weekend.
