GLOUCESTER — Fire Chief Eric Smith, Police Chief Edward Conley and Mayor Greg Verga wish to update the Gloucester community about an incident that took place Friday night at a city grocery store.

At approximately 8:23 p.m. Friday, March 14, first responders received a call about a fire at Market Basket, 101 Gloucester Crossing Road. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered two separate fires: one in the stockroom, another inside the cardboard compactor. The fires were knocked down by 9 p.m.

The store is now open after passing multiple Health Department and Building Department inspections. It was thoroughly cleaned and disinfected overnight, and any impacted food and packaging has been discarded.

“I am grateful to our capable Fire Department and mutual aid partners for their efficient work last night to bring down this fire. Ensuring our residents have access to safe and quality food remains a top priority, especially given the recent news in our community. I am relieved that the store has quickly met the Health Department’s requirements and is back open,” said Mayor Greg Verga. “I have full confidence in our public safety officials, and I’m grateful that no one was hurt during the incident.”

An investigation into the fire continues, with assistance provided by Gloucester Police and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office

Back To Destinos

There are so many favorite places to go for a meal that it’s not uncommon for us to find ourselves saying “Let’s go to (favorite place), we haven’t been there in a long time”. Destinos is a great example. We stopped by for lunch. You can’t really beat the dine-in option of having the daily soup/salad available as part of your meal. I like the Buffalo chicken dinner and Jim ordered a tuna sub. I brought some of the tenders home with me for another meal. They are efficient and prompt with their service which the many customers seem to appreciate. I’m glad we went back…..now on to the next “I forgot about that place!”

Irish Coffee At The Beauport

I impulsively decided to try an Irish Coffee while I was at the Beauport Hotel on Rogers St. recently. I don’t know why, but it’s not the first place that pops into my head for an Irish Coffee but this one was delightful. It gets big points for the vessel it arrives in, as well as the whipped cream. I can take or leave the Bailey’s depending on my mood but, in this case, it hit the spot 100%. And you can see our friends Pam and Nichole also enjoying the sight of this one! This one makes it to the top three. Slainte.

Patiently waiting for the float at the Magnolia Pier

With the warmer weather coming, walking has been easier to be outside.  On the Pier, Tuesday, noticed how the ramp wants the summer to get here.
