I saw this guy zipping around the Annisquam River on his Hydrofoil board the other day. He made it look fairly easy although I’m certain there must be quite the learning curve to remain so steady. Hydrofoils deflect the flow of water downwards…which then exerts a force upwards on the board. Once it picks up speed the board then lifts out of the water. Fun to watch….no doubt fun to ride as well.

The Friends of Plum Island Lighthouse offered tours of the small lighthouse on Northern Boulevard in Newburyport a few days ago. What a great opportunity to get inside the well-kept lighthouse and interact with the volunteers. They offer occasional tours and host a limited number of events. The scheduled tour time was only 15 minutes which was both adequate and worth the ride up there. Perhaps you’ve seen this lighthouse and wondered about it……..for more info click here.

Chief Edward Conley wishes to provide an update about the ongoing investigation into an incident involving juveniles on Friday, Aug. 30. The Gloucester Police Department remains fully committed to thoroughly and methodically investigating the matter and will continue to keep the community informed.
A specially trained civil rights detective, with the support of other officers, has been carefully identifying potential witnesses and preparing for interviews. Detectives have been in regular contact with the Essex County District Attorney’s Office regarding the investigation.
Given that this incident involves juveniles, Chief Conley cautions that a comprehensive and impartial investigation could take several weeks.
Chief Conley emphasizes that the safety and security of the community remain a top priority, and the Police Department is taking proactive steps to ensure that community members feel safe and secure both at school and throughout the City.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Gloucester Police Department at 978-283-1212.

Jim and I had a chance to tour the newly renovated Gloucester Police Station a coule of days ago. Our host was Chief Ed Conley and he gave us an informative and thorough guided tour. Though we had never seen the previous state of the inner workings at the police station (including the infamous pink cells), Chief Conley explained to us some facts about the renovation, the improvements and the long process to get to the current stage.
The renovations keep public and employee safety at the top of the considerations. All the wiring and technology has been updated; the offices and lobby got a facelift; and extra safety measures have been put in place to all concerned. AND the women have their own locker room now! The Chief arrived in 2019 and then the pandemic hit slowing the entire process down considerably. But the GPD have been in the new digs for about 2 months now and everyone we ran into seemed pleased.
Renovations continue in the court on the floor above and are hoped to be completed by the end of the calendar year. A new training facility will also be added on the 3rd floor.
Residents should be pleased with the project and the state of the art safety facility built with the community in mind. Thank you Chief Conley for your time! We look forward to a tour at the end of the next phase.

Join the Sawyer Free Library on Monday morning, September 8 at 10:45am for a fun and interactive storytime celebrating this year’s Gloucester Reads 2024 children’s book selection, Our Skin: A First Conversation About Raceby Megan Madison and Jessica Ralli, with pictures by Isabel Roxas. Following reading the book together, there will be a fun craft to work on!
From Penguin Random House:
While young children are avid observers and questioners of their world, adults often shut down or postpone conversations on complicated topics because it’s hard to know where to begin. Research shows that talking about issues like race and gender from the age of two not only helps children understand what they see, but also increases self-awareness, self-esteem, and allows them to recognize and confront things that are unfair, like discrimination and prejudice.
Developed by experts in the fields of early childhood and activism against injustice, this topic-driven picture book begins the conversation on race, with a supportive approach that considers both the child and the adult. No registration needed. For questions, visit: SawyerFreeLibrary.org or 978-325-5500.
Gloucester Reads is a collaboration between the Gloucester Racial Justice Team, the Sawyer Free Library, and Gloucester Health Department.
