FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH SAVOUR’S SUSAN RICHARDS

Susan Richards has had a lifelong interest in and love of wine and knew that someday she would turn her passion for wine into a second career. In 2018 Susan began to make that dream a reality and while still working full-time in healthcare completed the Wine Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 2 Award in Wine and Spirits and Level 3 Award in Wine.

To gain practical experience Susan worked for the Tasting Company, running wine tastings, and Westport Rivers Winery as a wine educator and salesperson. In 2020 Susan achieved the Certified Specialist of Wine credential from the Society of Wine Educators and is currently a candidate for the Master of Bourgogne Certificate from the Wine Scholar Guild.

Today, Susan is a wine sales consultant at Savour and recently launched her own company, Always Sharing Wine, through which she offers private wine tastings, wine education, and wine and food writing. Susan has published over 50 articles for the online magazine “Recette” and currently writes for “NapaValley Life” Magazine. Susan loves helping customers with food and wine pairing for any occasion. Her passion for and knowledge of wine is infectious. We are so pleased to have her on our team!

WINES

Tormaresca, Calafuria Rosato 2023, Salento, Italy

This wine comes from the “heel of the boot” in the southern Italian region of Puglia. Made from 100% Negroamaro grapes, the wine has a peach-pink hue with pleasant fruit aromas (strawberry, raspberry) and floral notes of violet and peony. On the palate it is fresh, well balanced, with the same fruit flavors as nose and persistent acidity for a crisp finish. Calafuria is produced from vineyards that extend along the Adriatic coastline. Its name comes from one of the over 700 bays on the Apulian peninsula. The region boasts a long tradition for producing rosĂ© wines made from Negroamaro, a variety that best expresses its full potential near the sea. Tomaresca is part of the Marchesi Antinori family of wines and is produced with the same attention to high quality. Pairs well with mild soft cheeses and seafood. Alc. 12%, $21.99

Joao Portugal Ramos, Marques De Borba Vinhas Velhas Branco, 2022, Alentejo, Portugal

The name comes from the happy coincidence of João Portugal Ramos’ vineyards and winery being in the Borba sub-region of the Alentejo and that his uncle has the noble title Marquês de Borba, a title created in 1811. Coming from this large wine region in southern Portugal, the wine is a blend of four native grape varieties: Roupeiro, Antao Vaz, Alvarinho, and Arinto dos Acores. Classic dry white from this region with aromas of citrus fruits on the nose and bright, crisp green apple, citrus, tropical fruit, and ripe peach flavors. The wine spends 8 months in a mix of French and Hungarian oak barrels, giving it a creamy texture and smooth finish. It pairs well with seared scallops, light pasta, and pork chops. Alc. 13%, $21.99

Nino Negri, Ca’Brione Alpi Retiche di Sondrio 2022, Lombardy, Italy

From the northern Italian region of Lombardy, this white wine is a blend of four grapes, including the red great varietal Nebbiolo (10%) along with 30 % each of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Incrocio Manzoni, a native grape to the region. Ca’Brione is an alpine white wine born in 1986. The soil’s geological origins go back to when the African and European plates collided, forming the Alps. The great variety of soil lends both minerality and elegance to the wine. The wine has a golden straw hue with an aroma of pear, apple, and white peach. The palate is the same with a hint of citrus, medium to full body with a bit of weight and structure in the mouth, and a pleasant long finish. It pairs well with cured meats, hard and mature cheeses, and creamy pasta dishes. Alc. 13%. $47.99.

Joao Portugal Ramos, Marques De Borba Vinhas Velhas Rosso, 2021, Alentejo, Portugal

The red wine comes from vineyards with more than 35-year-old vines . One of the most emblematic brands of JoĂŁo Portugal Ramos, MarquĂŞs de Borba combines the tradition of the Alentejo region with excellent quality, present since the first vintage in 1997. A bold red blend from the southern Alentejo region of Portugal, It comprises three native grape varieties: Aragonez (Tempranillo), Alicante Bouschet, Castelao, and the international varietal Syrah. The dark ruby red color leads to aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry. It spends 12 months in French and American oak barrels giving it a round structure and hint of tobacco along with the black fruit flavors. Rich, supple tannins lead to a long, enjoyable finish. It pairs well with red meats, pork, and strong cheeses. Alc. 14.5%. $21.99

Le Salare, Vicino al Mare, Old Vine Montepulciano D’ Abruzzo, 2020, Abruzzo Italy

Made from the Montepulciano grape varietal from the region of Abruzzo in central Italy. It comes from old vines that give it a depth and character beyond its age. The wine has a deep rose red color and a nose with ripe red fruit flavors of cherry and plum. Its full body has modest but well-integrated tannins that are mellow in the glass and lead to a long, elegant finish. Delicious when paired with classic Italian dishes like spaghetti and meatballs. Alc. 13%, $17.99.
