FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH GORDON ALEXANDER, OWNER OF TERROIR WINES
“A vineyard’s terroir is what makes each wine unique. It is everything that contributes to the distinction of a vineyard plot. It determines which grape varieties will thrive there. The best winemakers help the grapes to express their uniqueness, without technical intervention or heavy processing.”
” Terroir Wines is dedicated to the principle that place matters. We work with winemakers around the world that cherish their land, produce wines that express the sense of place, and that work with minimal intervention in the vineyard and the cellar. Most are organic, some biodynamic, all sustainable. Our wines are as unique and individual as their makers… and their terroir.”

Hermann Moser Zweigelt Rose “Rosi Mosi” Sparkling NV, Kremstal, Austria
Varietal: Zweigelt Alc 11.5%
Weingut Hermann Moser is run by Martin and Carmen Moser, the 26th generation of the family producing wine from the family vineyards. The estate is nearly 400 years old and is located in the village of Rohrendorf in the Kremstal wine-growing region in Lower Austria. The vineyards cover 19 hectares and are the best vineyards from Rohrendorf. Zweigelt is a cross between St Laurent and Blaufrankisch created by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt in 1922. It combines some of the best characteristics of both varieties, with a beautiful combination of earth and berry fruit. The Rosi Mosi is a lovely dry sparkler, with notes of red crushed fruit on the nose and strawberry on the palate. The red fruits carry forward with nice weight and balance matched by ample zing. Serve as aperitif. Pairs well with roast chicken, summer salads, spicy Asian dishes. $21.99
Vinos del Viento, Aragon, Spain
Michael Cooper, proprietor, vigneron, and winemaker for Vinos del Viento, is originally from Santa Barbara, California. He met his wife, Rosario, who hails from Zaragoza, in Rome and fell in love with the wines and landscapes of her home country, the Grenache territory of southern Aragon. Campo de Borja is in the province of Zaragoza, within the Aragon region, just southeast of Rioja. It includes parts of the Ebro valley and spills up the slops of the Moncayo Massif, part of the Sistema Iberico mountain range just to the south. Vines were introduced by the Romans, although the first written records of viticulture in the region are contained in monastic records dating to 1203. One of the unique features of Michael’s wines is that they’re all from these ancient vineyards, all dry farmed, and all high-altitude. In fact his lowest vineyard is at 1,800 feet of elevation! These are some of the purest expressions of great indigenous varieties in all of northeast Spain. Today we’re pouring three wines from Vinos del Viento.
A blend of Garnacha Blanca and Viognier, from a single high- altitude vineyard on calcareous clay soils at about 1950ft. Hand-harvested and then vinified in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of fruit, then rested on fine lees for four months to create texture and aromatics. The wine is long on the palate. Ideal as an aperitif. Pairs well with salads, white meat, or soft cheeses. $25.99
Amber
Varietal: Moscatel del Alejandria Alc. 12%
This natural, skin-contact wine is produced from 100% Moscatel del Alejandria, old vines dry-farmed at 2,000 feet of elevation on poor, rocky, calcareous-clay soils. Harvested at dawn and cold-fermented in stainless steel using natural yeasts and spontaneous fermentation, then long lees contact and bottling with minimal sulfites. A classic amber wine with earthy tobacco-leaf aromas and underlying bright Muscat fruit; it has a long, succulent finish. Pairs well with lamb, roasted or caramelized vegetables, and eggplant. $24.99
Aventura is a juicy and forward blend of primarily Garnacha, Garnacha Tintorera and Syrah made with grapes from 30-year-old, dry-farmed vines planted between 1,800 feet and 2,200 feet on clay-rich soils. Deep purple in color, it has notes of berry, plum and herbs, and a kick of black pepper. Pairs well with roasted meats, casseroles, stews. $19.99
Vaughn Duffy Sonoma County Pinot Noir, Sonoma, California
Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc. 14.5%
After stints with a variety of Sonoma winemakers and a stint running a tasting room out in the Sierra Foothills AVA, Matt Duffy and Sara Vaughn made their first two barrels of wine in 2009. Quickly gaining critical acclaim, they’ve become a favorite in the Bay area. With total production now in the 2,000 case range, Vaughn Duffy is part of the new era of first-generation winemaking families in California. Sourcing grapes from farmers across the finest North Coast appellations, Vaughn Duffy crafts small lots of primarily vineyard-designate wines. The wines are compelling with brilliant, succulent fruit and long, savory finishes. Matt feels that the Sonoma County Pinot Noir does a great job of showcasing the diversity of the different AVAs within Sonoma County when they come together to make a single wine. The wine is a blend of fruit sourced on Sonoma Mountain, on the Sonoma Coast, and in the Russian River Valley. Mostly destemmed before fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels (25% new) for 10 months , bottled unfined and unfiltered. The black cherry, red plum, and baking spice aromatics hint at the fruit and spice interplay that dances on the palate. The layered textures open up to flavors of strawberry preserves, cranberry and notes of savory fresh herbs. Pairs well with roast chicken, salmon, barbecued ribs. $44.99
Bernard Magrez L’Aurore de Gascogne Le Douceur de Vignes, Gascony, France
Varietal : Gros Manseng Alc. 12%
Gascony is the region in southwest France that sweeps south from the Bordeaux region down to the Pyrenees Mountains and the Spanish border. The Cotes de Gascogne appellation is slightly inland, nestled behind the pine forests of Les Landes, 5,000 square miles of former marsh, moor and dune-field that was stabilized with maritime pine tree plantations in the early 1800s. Born in Bordeaux in 1936, Bernard Magrez left school at 16 to begin trading wine. Over the decades, he has built a formidable firm owning no less than forty-three individual domains, including several of Bordeaux’s most famous Crus Classes. In fact, he is the only individual to own 4 separate Cru Classe Chateaux. Today Magrez has properties all over the world, and a yacht racing team. At Magrez’ estate in the Cotes de Gascogne, he produces two wines, both made from 100% Gros Manseng. The dry version is a classic Cote de Gascogne, dry, crisp, and clean. The Aurore de Gascogne Le Douceur de Vignes, however, is his masterpiece from this estate: lightly sweet, with heady floral aromas and a long delicate finish. Pairs well with a lunchtime picnic, afternoon fruit and cheese board, or to accompany a cheese selection after dinner, especially blues. $17.99

Sawyer Free Library will raise steel beam signed by community into place on February 9
It has been just four months since the Sawyer Free Librarybroke ground on its historic renovation, expansion, and modernization project, and at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 9, the Library will celebrate the project’s next significant milestone, the placement of the highest steel beam at a topping off ceremony. The long-standing construction tradition of a beam topping will mark the completion of the structural phase of this historic project.
The ceremony will feature remarks from local elected officials and library representatives, to be followed by the exciting moment of the last steel beam of the newly expanded 2025 Sawyer Free structure being put into place by a crane. In keeping with tradition, the beam will be adorned with an evergreen tree on one end and an American flag joined by the City of Gloucester’s on the other. Due to limited space on the site, the public is welcome to witness the historic moment outside the safety fencing.
This momentous day will also pay tribute to the incredible community that the Sawyer Free Library has the great honor of serving. Over the past week, the commemorative 11-foot steel beam was signed by over 400 people from throughout Gloucester and beyond, making them a permanent part of this transformative project. Participants of all ages joyfully joined together to leave their mark on the symbolic steel beam, expressing their support, sharing personal messages, and commemorating loved ones, making it a beautiful representation of the community’s collective spirit and deep appreciation for its beloved public Library.
As we reach this exciting milestone for the 2025 Sawyer Free Library, we celebrate not just the physical structure taking shape but also the collective vision and dedication of our Gloucester community,” said Sawyer Free Library Board of Trustees President Mern Sibley.
“The topping of this beam symbolizes the culmination of the tireless effort and shared commitment of so many, including the countless volunteers, elected and city officials, generous donors, talented creative partners, dedicated Library staff, and our incredible patrons,” added Sibley. “Reaching this exciting milestone has been a tremendous team effort, and as construction progresses, I would especially like to recognize the outstanding work of our partner, W.T. Rich Construction, and our subcontractors in bringing us closer each day to the grand opening of the reimagined 2025 Sawyer Free Library.”
“W.T. Rich is proud to celebrate this construction milestone for the Sawyer Free Library project. We are honored to be a part of a project that is so important to the Gloucester community. We have had a great working relationship with the City and our construction partners, and we look forward to continuing that collaboration to turnover a beautiful, newly renovated and expanded Library in the spring of 2025,” said Jonathan Rich, Chief Executive Officer of W.T. Rich Company.
The 2025 Sawyer Free Library capital campaign is continuing during construction to raise $11M towards the $29M goal. To date, it has approximately $10.3 million in grants secured from the Massachusetts Public Library Construction Project (MPLCP) and Green Library Incentives. In addition, the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund, a Commonwealth of Massachusetts program administered through a collaborative arrangement between MassDevelopment and the Mass Cultural Council, has provided substantial funding for the project.
The Library is also immensely grateful for the tremendous engagement and investment at every level from all parts of the community committed to realizing the 2025 Sawyer Free Library. The project has received transformational gifts from individual and corporate donors, including room-naming contributions from the Institution for Savings, Bank Gloucester, Cape Ann Savings Bank, Gorton’s, and Sudbay Motors.
There are still naming opportunities available for donors interested in leaving their legacy, honoring a family member, or aligning their company’s mission and values while supporting the Library, Gloucester, and the Cape Ann community. To learn more about investing in the 2025 Sawyer Free Library, please visit sawyerfreelibrary.org.
The comprehensive renovation, modernization, and expansion of Gloucester’s public Library officially broke ground this past September. The project, which remains on schedule and budget, will take approximately eighteen months and is expected to be opened to the public in the summer of 2025.
When its doors open, the 2025 Sawyer Free Library will exemplify what a 21st-century public library can and should be in terms of architecture, sustainability, accessibility, use of natural resources and light, wayfinding, lines of sight, air quality, and public safety. The 2025 Sawyer Free Library project will preserve the original exterior, housing an entirely redesigned interior, and will also double the size of the existing Library’s footprint with a 14,000-square-foot addition.
The 2025 Sawyer Free Library will offer current and emerging public technology, diverse collections, engaging programs, and new dedicated spaces for collaboration, learning, and relaxation. It will feature a digital learning lab, a 100-seat community room with state-of-the-science media presentation equipment, a local history research center, a dedicated teen room, a beautiful expanded children’s room with an early learning center for toddlers, study rooms for individual and group study, a 16-seat conference room, and much more. With its modern and sustainable design, the Library will provide an inspiring environment for library patrons, staff, the community, and beyond.
W.T. Rich Company of Beverly, MA, is leading the construction of the 2025 Sawyer Free Library. The comprehensive project was designed by a team composed of Oudens Ello Architecture and Dore + Whittier Architecture, Construction Management Firm W.T. Rich, and Library project leaders, along with the vital input of the citizens of Gloucester.
The Sawyer Free Library is temporarily located at 21 Main Street and online 24/7 during construction. The Library remains committed to providing a dynamic and enriching environment for all. For more information about the 2025 Sawyer Free Library, please visit us in person at 21 Main Street, online at sawyerfreelibrary.org, or 978-325-5500.
