Good Saturday Morning Joey,
Carin Macnamara Here…
In the crashing waves, I heard a sounding buoy…
Hurricane Lee’s path churning northward, whipping up waves and pounding our Cape Ann’s lady guardian… “Mother Ann.”
Mother Ann has been there for ages… she is forever looking outward, buffeting the waves and protecting Gloucester Harbor. It was a battle of the sea between the two ladies, “Lee” and our “Mother Ann,”… but our lady worked her magic as Lee’s fury weakened to a Category 1 storm…
Our “Mother Ann” is a beautiful formation of coastal rocks situated on the shore near the Eastern Point Lighthouse. Casually observed, it is just a pile of haphazard boulders… but with an imaginative eye, and when viewed at a particular angle, the formation can be seen as a reclining lady with a noble profile, and hair flowing back in the wind. Some people say that the shape of the rocks represents the royal mother of King Charles I, Anne of Denmark, after whom our Cape Ann was named.
And the sounding buoy I heard is known as “Mother Ann’s Cow.”
