WINES

Gerard Fiou Sancerre Terroir Silex 2021, Loire, France

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc, Alc.13%

Marked by its charming hilltop village in the easternmost territory of the Loire, Sancerre is famous for its vivacious, citrus-dominant Sauvignon Blanc. Variations in topography—rolling hills and steep slopes from about 600 to 1,300 feet in elevation—with great soil variations, contribute to the variations in character in Sancerre Sauvignon Blancs. Flint (silex) soils close to the village of Sancerre produce particularly perfumed and age-worthy wines. Domaine Gerard Fiou is a family Estate created several generations ago by Gerard Fiou’s ancestors. Since taking over, Gerard Fiou has been developing his property by taking care to limit the yield of his vineyard and to respect the ecosystem of the grounds moving toward biodynamic methods. The 2021 Sancerre Blanc, Terroir Silex, opens with a clear and elegant, very aromatic yet refined bouquet with aromas of white and yellow tropical fruits (passion fruit) as well as a hint of cassis, fresh nettles, and crushed flint stones. Medium-bodied and with clear, well-defined fruit, this is an elegant, stimulating, and fruity Sancerre that finishes with tart grapefruit and lime bitters with ripe but refreshing, perfectly integrated acidity. Pairs well with shellfish and spring salads. $ 29.99

Clendenen Family Vineyards Pinot Gris 2020, Santa Maria, California

Varietal: Pinot Gris, Alc.13.5%

Jim Clendenen had already collected countless honors and accolades for his Au Bon Climat wines when he created the Clendenen Family Vineyards label in 2000 as a vehicle to bring many of his most artisanal and experimental wines to market. All are produced in very small quantities; many of these wines are crafted from unique varietals grown primarily on his organically farmed Le Bon Climat and Rancho La Cuna Vineyards. The project has expanded to include special plantings at Bien Nacido Vineyard as well. While two of the jewels from this project are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, he also makes benchmark examples of Nebbiolo, Tocai Friulano, Viognier, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc, and a Syrah/Viognier blend. The Pinot Gris has stone fruit aromas and a rich, full body with juicy peach and nectarines notes and a spicy ginger note on the finish. Pairs well with sushi, salads and fresh vegetables, shellfish. $27.99

M. Chapoutier Marius Blanc, Languedoc, France

Varietal: Vermentino, Alc. 12.5%

M.Chapoutier began in 1808 and has since expanded into an internationally recognized domain. It was Marius Chapoutier, current winemaker Michel Chapoutier’s great-grandfather, who put the Chapoutier name firmly on the Rhône Valley map in the early 20th century and established its reputation for quality as far afield as America. Michel is continuing his grandfather’s legacy. The grapes are harvested at nighttime so as to prevent their oxidation and thus obtain richer and fresher wines. They are pressed directly without any maceration. No sulphur is added during the fermentation, which is carried out at a low temperature. As soon as the alcoholic fermentation has ended, the wines are cooled and left to mature without any sulphur on fine lees. The Marius Vermentino pours a pale yellow with green tints. The nose is very open, with citrus aromas and notes of grapefruit and ripe fruit. The palate is ample, rich, and fruity with good acidity. Pairs well with fish, herby and citrusy dishes, and artichokes. $14.99

Mirabeau Rosé Classic, Provence, France

Varietals: 60% Grenache, Syrah 30%, 10% Cinsault, Alc.12.5%

In 2009, former wine importer Stephen Cronk, his wife, Jeany, and their three children left London and moved to Provence to pursue their dream of becoming winemakers. They were joined by master winemaker Angela Muir, and Mirabeau Rosé was born. Domaine Mirabeau falls within the newly created subregion within the Côtes de Provence, AOC Notre Dame des Anges. The terroir covers 3,900 hectares of vineyards interwoven within the landscape of umbrella pines, cork oak trees, and chestnut groves typical of the Plaine des Maures, an ecosystem rich in fauna and flora. The 20-hectare estate includes 14 hectares of vines, principally Grenache, Cinsault, and Rolle (Vermentino). Domaine Mirabeau is in the process of converting to organic farming and regenerative agriculture. The Rosé Classic pours a pale peach color with brighter pink reflections. It is elegant on the nose, with aromas of cherry, vineyard peach, apricot, orange zest, freesia, and a hint of strawberries and cream. Ample and generous in the mouth, it has good acidity. Notes of dried peach and ripe strawberry, and a slight grip, gives some real layered depth to the palate.

Pairs well with charcuterie, ratatouille, and grilled salmon. $18.99

Octopoda Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, California

Varietal: Pinot Noir, Alc.14%

Precision Wine Co. presents a distinguished and diverse collection of wines. Each wine is made with meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to quality; from harvesting the grapes in the vineyards to designing original packaging, every step of the winemaking process is handled with precision. The wines are made to showcase the complexity of flavor, diversity of terroir, and distinct characteristics of California’s appellations and wine regions. Proprietor and vintner Trevor Sheehan started his journey to create a top wine collection when he became a winemaker 10 years ago. Octopoda Pinot Noir pours a ruby red, and rich aromas of red cherries and plums on the nose continue on the palate, along with a hint of toasted oak. Pairs well with fish, chicken, and Asian food. $22.99

Natale Verga Intré Rosso, Lombardy, Italy

Varietals: Corvina, Sangiovese, Nero d’Avola, Alc. 14%

The Verga family has been producing wine since 1895. These days, the fifth generation of Vergas is making wine in Lombardy, and they have made improvements and innovations in production that have allowed them to expand distribution worldwide. The Natale Verga Intré Rosso is an Italian red blend that hails from three different terroirs, Corvina (Veneto), Sangiovese (Toscana), and Nero d’Avola (Sicilia). It opens with a bouquet of red currants, blackberries, black cherry and a sweet spice of licorice. The flavors travel to a round and warm palate, and while the tannins are present, they lead to a soft, lingering finish.

Pairs well with baked macaroni and cheese, chicken ravioli, or pizza. $ 14.99

Help Keep the Happy Humpback Family Afloat

From Dan, Aaron, from the Happy Humpback’s brother

The Happy Humpback is a great local cafe

Hi, my name is Dan and my amazing older brother has been recently hospitalized with meningitis, as well as a blood infection, leaving him unable to work while he fights to get well. This leaves my brother and his family in a difficult situation as their cafe, The Happy Humpback, is their main source of income. As a neighborhood spot that recently celebrated its one year anniversary, we are worried that this loss of income will result in a forced permanent closure of the restaurant. We would hate for that to happen. Please, consider donating to help keep my brother’s family and the Happy Humpback on solid ground. All donations will go toward paying bills, covering lost wages for employees, and supporting family expenses. Happy Humpback Cafe Page

Dinner on the Deck at Mile Marker One

Several friends and I had dinner on the deck at Mile Marker One last night. We shared a few appetizers (which I forgot to photograph) that were delicious….specifically the SRIRACHA HONEY CAULIFLOWER BITES, CRISP & SPICY BROCCOLI, and the TAHINI HUMMUS, WHIPPED FETA & GREEN OLIVE TAPENADE. For dinner we also chose to share a few different entrees so we sampled the SEAFOOD-STUFFED PINEAPPLE, LOBSTER MAC & CHEESE, STEAK TIPS, FRESH BURRATA, CLASSIC CAESAR, and FISH & CHIPS. The Painkillers and Watermelon Coolers were perfect as well! Check out the menu here: https://capeannmarina.com/dining/menus/

Red Throated Loon In East Gloucester

Pat D's avatarGood Morning Gloucester

As you have heard me say, I am not a birder though I do love taking bird photos. I was doing just that with this unusual (for me) bird in East Gloucester. I had observed it previously but was without my camera but this time I hit the jackpot as it paddled close by. I suspected at first it might be a loon, something I have always wanted to see, but clearly this wasn’t the loon I was expecting. The Photo ID on the Merlin app identified it as a red throated loon, apparently a bit unusual in our area. Some additional info at this Cornell link if you are interested…birder or not…..
