Video – 2013 Sunday Greasy Pole Walking for Loved Ones and Former Champs

Nicky Avelis Walking for Loved Ones

Nicky Avelis captures the flag for the third year in a row. Avelis dedicated his win to family friend and St. Peter’s Fiesta legend Sleepy Pallazolla.

Congratulations Nicky!

I love filming this event for several reasons; to capture the camaraderie and the hilarity, and mostly because of the the true grit and determined spirits of the Greasy Pole Walkers. It takes tremendous courage to walk and to keep trying. To all the Greasy Pole Walkers–may you all experience the glory of a win!

Duck Tour Question

Jonathan Olly asks-

Greetings Joey,

I have a minor photographic mystery for you.  I recently came across this postcard on eBay, showing a WWII DUKW emerging onto Pavilion Beach, with Ten Pound Island Light in the background.  Do you or any of your readers remember when these tours operated in Gloucester?  The caption on the back of the card reads "Amphibious duck ride from land to sea on a guided tour of Gloucester Harbor.  Leaving every half hour from Pavilion Beach, Gloucester, Massachusetts."
Best regards,

Jonathan

Hey Joey,
I found a bracelet near the high school, which might be of sentimental value to someone.  It’s an Alex and Ani bracelet with one big medallion- owner can email me to identify.

A Question To The Rockporters- Fog Horns in Rockport – what happened to them – HELP ME PLEASE

Wayne asks-

Hi Gloucester;
I absolutely enjoy your blog. But I have a question concerning the Fog Horns in Rockport  and no one seems to be able to answer my question. I am hoping you can help.
I live on Phillips Ave, Rockport (near the Emerson Inn)..For years I could hear the FOG Horns during overcast days and find the sound so comforting & soothing (reminds me of days gone by). However,, for several months now-they have been silenced and I am heartbroken………
what happened to the Fog Horns?  Please don’t tell me they have ceased due to some disgruntled residents?
Please make my day – can you help me and maybe do a little digging around and see what you can find out?    ..I’m quite serious.
Most Appreciative-look forward to hearing from you
Wayne

Female Ruby-throated Hummingbird ~ Susan Kelly Photo

Susan shares this photo of a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird that frequents her garden. If you want female hummingbirds to choose your garden to build their nests nearby, I recommend putting your hummingbird feeders out early, in March and April. Northward migrating hummingbirds are in need of nourishment by they time they reach our shores. Their diet consist primarily of small insects; there are few insects on the wing and even fewer nectar plants blooming. I place my hummingbird feeders above early blooming Red Riding Hood Tulips. Although the tulips do not provide nectar, the red flowers lure them to the hummingbird feeders.

A note about hummingbird feeders. Never add red food coloring or use honey to sweeten the water. To make your own sugar solution, combine 1 part pure granulated sugar to 4 parts water. Clean you hummingbird feeders weekly with a 50/50 combination of vinegar and water; more frequently in warm weather.

We’re coming back next year strong. Count on it!

Kudos to all of the people who put in the time to build floats and walk in the Parade.
Special nod to The folks at Ryan and Wood and Camp Spindrift who were far and away the Best In Class IMO.

The "You. Are. Beautiful. – Tribute to Warriors" show is now up at LAT 43 in Gloucester!

Dear Cape Ann Community,

The "You. Are. Beautiful. – Tribute to Warriors" show is now up at LAT 43 in Gloucester! This special event to celebrate art and support our wounded vets is this Monday, July 8 from 6:30-9:30pm.  Tickets are $20/person and 100% of the ticket price goes to benefit the Semper Fi Fund.  You can buy tickets at the door or here:  http://youarebeautiful.eventbrite.com/

Through this body of work, I am proud to share the voices and portraits of five veterans, four of whom are from Massachusetts.  All five of the veterans I photographed will be at the event, including Corporal Evan Reichenthal, USMC.

Evan decided he wanted to become a Marine when he was in middle school.  After graduating from high school in 2009, he enlisted and would see his dream of pursuing the ultimate profession to test one’s mind, body and spirit, come true.

In December 2010, Evan’s unit deployed to a small base in Marjah in southern Afghanistan.   Evan was an infantryman and was on foot patrol on January 5, 2011 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED).  The explosion severed his right leg, damaged his left calf, destroyed his right elbow and sent shrapnel throughout most of his body.

Evan underwent 26 surgeries following his injury.  He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service.  Evan applied the same calm determination he maintained in becoming a Marine to his recovery.  His will to adapt and overcome continues to make him a warrior.  As he says, “My body may break but my mind cannot.”

Evan would say he is not a hero because he was just doing his job.  I think he’s a hero, and sometimes even heroes need help.  This is why we are doing this event.

Evan is also on the cover of my book, "You. Are. Beautiful. Volume 01 – Portraits and Poems."  I launched it in April, and it features 26 people I photographed for my project, veterans and beyond, across Boston and surrounding areas, Chicago and surrounding areas, Los Angeles, Oakland and San Francisco.

100% of net proceeds from the book go to charities that empower wounded vets and at-risk youth.  The book is available at Lula’s Pantry in Rockport, Willow Rest in Gloucester and online at:  http://ThiLinh.pixpasites.com.

I hope you are inspired by this work, and I hope you will pay this message forward.  You are beautiful.

Sincerely,

Thi Linh Wernau, Rockport, MA
