Good evening Joey,

I know that you are just wrapping up your coverage of this year’s FIESTA but I wanted to share with you some other great news about Gloucester I thought you might want to share with your dedicated followers.

The organization I am involved with through the North Shore of the United Way –  Women in Action – announced a new round of grants with $20,000 going to Cape Ann based organizations. I wanted to share the following press release elaborating on the grants for your consideration…

NORTH SHORE UNITED WAY’S WOMEN IN ACTION AWARDS $20K  TO CAPE ANN PROGRAMS WITH FOCUS ON HEALTHY FAMILIES

The North Shore United Way’s Women in Action initiative announced that $20,000 of their total $30,767 in grant awards will support two Cape Ann programs with a focus on Gloucester: The Cape Ann Farmers’ Market Backyard Growers Program and The Open Door.  Gloucester is one of 35 communities in Massachusetts with the highest concentrations of hunger, six times greater than the state average.  In Gloucester’s schools, more than 1 in 3 children (actually 44%) come from families that struggle to feed their children. The Women in Action (WIA) grants address the barriers to purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables, increase exposure to and understanding of healthy food for elementary aged children and provide resources for low-income families.

Launched in 2011, Women in Action is an initiative that grew out of the North Shore United Way’s strategic focus area of health.  Through the efforts and commitment of WIA committee members and Manchester residents, Nancy Bildner, Betsy Brown, Tracy Davis, Deb de Sherbinin, Ann Noble-Kiley, Sue Philbrick as well as WIA Co-Chair and Essex resident, Scottie Robinson, 100% of all money raised through WIA is awarded each spring through specific grants to local programs focused on nutrition and physical activity for children.
