Is it really such a good idea to have internet access in a restaurant? The last thing you need is people sitting all day with a cup of coffee chatting with their friends who buy their coffee in San Francisco I should think. Any restaurant owners here have experience with this?

It seems to bring folks in to the coffee shops who might buy a cup of coffee and a scone or something. I bet there are some who abuse the privilege but it doesn’t seem to hurt sales at Starbucks, The Lone Gull, Pleasant Street Tea and Coffee Co or Cape Ann Coffee. Many times transients look for places like this to connect to the grid when on the road. I imagine soon enough laptops and mobile devices will all work off of 3g networks and the need for wifi hotspots will be less of an issue for those who like to be connected.
