Things To Do- Homes For The Holidays Event 11/22 11AM-4PM
Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce
Eight fabulous homes in Magnolia will be open to the public on Saturday, November 22, for a self-guided tour from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Many of these beautiful homes will be professionally decorated for the holidays. “Homes for the Holidays” is a program of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Businesswomen’s Division.
The Home Tour is being planned by the Businesswomen to support the Carolyn O’Connor Scholarship. Named for the first Chairperson of this active Chamber group, the scholarship benefits a woman who is changing careers or returning to the workforce after an absence and is in need of further education. The Businesswomen have given out three $1,000 scholarships since it was created in 2006. The group is hoping to raise enough funds to either increase the scholarship amount or the number of scholarships for 2009.
Tickets are $25.00 in advance and $30.00 on the day of the tour. Actual tickets and a map showing the location of the homes can be picked up on the day of the tour at the Magnolia Library, 1 Lexington Avenue, Gloucester, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Contact the Chamber office to order your advance tickets.

THE TRAP
SHOWN AT 7:15PM -FREE SHOW!
A modern film noir reflecting the true face of Serbian “society in transition,” It’s a story that could happen to you. An ordinary man is forced to choose between life and death of his own child. “The Trap” is a film about post-Milosevic’s Serbia, in which there is no more war, only a moral and existential desert. This is Serbia in transition, in which human life is worth little, and normal life remains almost unreachable.”Beautifully executed…deeply moving…a thoroughly involving cinematic experience” -Stephen Farber, The Hollywood Reporter
This is a free show, and like at all of our free shows, patrons can purchase any quantity of discount passes for future ticketed shows for $6.00 (which is the price you would normally have to purchase 25 passes to get).
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21
MOMMA’S MAN
SHOWN AT 5:00PM (SHOWING NOVEMBER 21-23)
From the producers of “Half Nelson” and “Maria Full Of Grace,” “Mommas Man” chronicles the increasingly anxious dilemma of Mikey, a young husband and father who stops off at his parents’ loft during a business trip to New York and finds himself emotionally unable to leave. Unsure of his own motivations, he makes up excuses about why hes staying — his flight is delayed; his flight is canceled — but while his doting mother (the directors real mother) is more than happy to enable his procrastination, his father (the directors real father) grows suspicious of his son’s changes of plans.”A touchingly true film, part weepie, part comedy, about the agonies of navigating that slippery slope called adulthood.” -Manohla Dargis, The New York Times;”A beautiful, wise, shaggy, poker-faced comedy of discombobulation.” -Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
THE POOL
SHOWN AT 7:15PM (SHOWING NOVEMBER 21-23)
Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, “The Pool” is the story of Venkatesh, a “room boy” working at a hotel in Panjim, Goa, who sees from his perch in a mango tree a luxuriant garden and shimmering pool hidden behind a wall. In making whatever efforts he can to better himself, Venkatesh offers his services to the wealthy owner of the home. Not content to simply dream about a different life, Venkatesh is inquisitive about the home’s inhabitants — indeed about the world around him — and his curiosity changes the shape of his future.”Gorgeous…glowing luminescence.” -Stephen Holden, The New York Times;”A truly independent gem of a feature. Informed by incisive observations about the class divide but more interested in the mysteries of the human heart, this gentle variation on neorealism is a delight on every level.” -Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter
Art Auction To Benefit The Library’s Book Fund
.hmmessage P { margin:0px; padding:0px } body.hmmessage { font-size: 10pt; font-family:Verdana } Hi; Joey,
I was wondering if you could put a post about the Art Auction That’s going on at the Sawyer Free Libray on your site. There are over 60 paintings by Cape Ann artist’s Hanging in the Library’s Lobby. Most of the paintings are of Gloucester scenes. I have a small one of “Autumn on Good Harbor Beach”. The Silent Auction goes on until December 1st and then they follow up with a live Auction on the Paintings on December 3rd. Proceeds go to the library’s book fund. I enjoy your site very much, strangely enough I enjoy your photo’s of the “sleeping” Gulls.
I’m sure your post will help out very much.
Here’s a link to the librarys calendar page That explains the Auction;

Winning Good Morning Gloucester Logo Beth Swan
There were many submissions for the GMG Logo Contest and truthfully I loved every single one.
Each one had a different style that brought individual elements that I really liked and the separation between the winning design from Beth Swan at Black Swan Design and the rest was minimal but she hit everything on all points for me with the sunrise symbolizing Morning, the homie, and the simplicity of the design.
Thanks to Alicia Pensarosa, Cathy Tarr, Kat Valentine, Hedgie, and Lia Parisi for playing along.

“A bit about what I do: (this is always tricky for me, feel free to change things or not include at all.)
I come from a fine arts background and grew up in a family of construction workers – so I create. Currently, I work doing graphic design (print and web) for nonprofits, small businesses, and public libraries. Recent work includes the Fitchburg Public Library website, Natick Veterans Oral History Project website, and The Work of 1000 Documentary Film publicity materials (an awesome local documentary, check it out, http://www.workof1000.com through partner Extra Mile Design in Pepperell; Middle East North Africa Weekend at Harvard University materials; and Won Buddhism of Boston website. I have an interest in creative reclaimed materials uses, green construction, organization, jewelry-making, and wild edibles. “
