Making Jokes During a Presentation Helps Men But Hurts Women”

ouch

“…However, our research suggests that the benefits of humor do not extend to everyone — women may actually be harmed by using humor at work. We find that when men add humor to a business presentation, observers view them as having higher levels of status (that is, respect or prestige) within the organization, and give them higher performance ratings and leadership capability assessments compared to when they do not include humor. However, when women add the same humor to the same presentation, people view them as having lower levels of status, rate their performance as lower, and consider them less capable as leaders…”

Women of Essex exhibit at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum opens this weekend

Slated to run in conjunction with National Women’s History Month, Women of Essex Stories to Share, will be on display most weekends from March 18-April 29. The show is hosted by Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum. Lee adds:

“The motivation for this exhibit was the recognition that, while our emphasis at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum has been on shipbuilding and the men involved with it, there were many significant roles of women in the community. Hence the exhibit Women of Essex – Stories to Share. This exhibit features about a dozen women that we are featuring individually in this first phase of the project. To help scope this effort, we are focusing this phase on women who are no longer with us. These include the women that were instrumental in building the first meeting house, one of the first woman auctioneers in the country, a female professional baseball player, a woman who was a motivator behind several town projects, several individuals active in the arts, and even an enslaved woman. There will be collections of several other groups of women, namely teachers and restaurateurs, an Essex mainstay.”

10 Ways To Celebrate Women’s History Month From Beth Pocock

Hi Joey,  Didn’t know if this would be appropriate for you but thought I’d try.  March is Women’s History Month and I compiled a list of 10 ways to celebrate.  Several different Cape Ann institutions are doing exhibits:  Cape Ann museum is doing exhibit of two of Cape Ann’s best women photographers; Library is doing displays and a panel discussion on local women who have started businesses.  All of these are listed on the 10 ways to celebrate.  I’ve attached 3 things: 1) the list of 10 ways to celebrate 2)a photograph from the Cape Ann Museum exhibit and 3) the national logo for Women’s History Month.

Hope this is helpful.   Beth
