Gloucester Motif Monday: daybreak moonchase

6:06 AM

20160424_060642

On lucky mornings, there’s time enough to chase the sky. This motif has an emotional cue as well as visual. I was thinking of my parents, early risers, and phases of twilight as a dominant pull. I’m no accidental reverencer. Scratch that. I am. I barely check the weather forecast. The closest I came to regularly checking the weather forecast was the dead simple (and defunct) ‘Umbrella Today’, an early iPad download and sweet routine with my kids.

What do you think of this simple planning tool, Suncalc, for tracking the sun’s path at a particular location? It itemizes those twilight phases so it might be useful for plan-ahead types. Artists may find it easier for setting up shots or an easel; organize your garden, layout solar panels, orient a home with windows and trees sited to save energy, design the most comfortable and practical floor plan for an outdoor event, etc.

Electricity Update 18 Brian and Diane O’Connor Are Going Solar

Solar Success!!! Brian and Diane O’Connor Had Their Solar Install On East Main Street #GloucesterMA Done On Earth Day and It’s Looking Sweet!

Back In January we were there when Brian’s Solar Advisor Kevin Prickett came by to look at Brian’s house and make recommendations. Here is what he had to say back in January-

Hi Joey, Just a quick follow on Brian and Diane O’Connor’s Solar evaluation. Brian and Diane’s home has qualified and they have decided to put rooftop solar on their home in Gloucester. (Only 15% of homes in MA are eligible.) Because of their home’s orientation to the sun and other factors, their entire cost will be covered by various federal, state and utility incentives. In fact they will actually be making money over and above their cost. And getting 90% of their electricity for free. If anyone else would like to find out if their home qualifies, I just need their contact information and our techs will initially rate the home via satellite. If it qualifies, we can up with a time for us to talk about how it all works. (About 90 mins.) I am in the process of working with several other Gloucester residents and will keep you posted on their progress. Many thanks for your continued support, Kevin Prickett Solar Advisor

As you can see it’s all come to fruition!

If you would like a completely free Solar evaluation to see if your house qualifies for the crazy amount of incentives and as Kevin states potentially 90% of your electricity for free, Fill Out The Form and They Will Contact You To Set It Up-

How solar power and electric cars could make suburban living awesome again

From the Washington Post:

The suburbs have had it rough in the last few years. The 2008-2009 economic collapse led to waves of foreclosures in suburbia, as home prices plummeted. More recently, census data suggest that Americans are actually shifting back closer to city centers, often giving up on the dream of a big home in suburbs (much less the far-flung “exurbs”).

It doesn’t help that suburbia has long been the poster child for unsustainable living. You have to drive farther to work, so you use a lot of gas. Meanwhile, while having a bigger home may be a plus, that home is also costlier to heat and cool. It all adds up — not just in electricity bills, but in overall greenhouse gas emissions. That’s why suburbanites, in general, tend to have bigger carbon footprints than city dwellers.

You can see as much in this amazing map from researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, showing how carbon footprints go up sharply along the east coast as you move away from city centers:

Affordable Electric cars are Coming Soon Study Says

From Gizmodo

For many of us, purchasing an electric vehicle is still a pie in the sky dream. But that might be changing soon, if a new peer-reviewed study is correct that the cost of electric car batteries is falling much more quickly than we assumed.

Lithium ion batteries make up anywhere between a quarter and half the cost of electric cars today. By systematically reviewing over 80 cost estimates published between 2007 and 2014, researchers at the Stockholm Environment Institute found that the cost of Li-battery packs used by leading manufacturers like Tesla and Nissan is falling by roughly 8 % per year. That’s similar to the rate that was seen with the nickel metal hydride battery technology used in hybrids like the Toyota Prius.

What’s more, it means that battery cost is rapidly approaching a threshold that could make the average Joe think seriously about trading in his gas guzzler. According to MIT Technology Review:

Electricity Update: Boston Globe Says Electric Companies Now Fear Solar

Utilities fight rise in home solar power

By Joby Warrick

Three years ago, the nation’s top utility executives gathered at a Colorado resort to hear warnings about a grave new threat to operators of America’s electric grid: not superstorms or cyberattacks, but rooftop solar panels.

If demand for residential solar continued to soar, traditional utilities could soon face serious problems, from declining retail sales and a loss of customers to ‘‘potential obsolescence,’’ according to a presentation prepared for the group. ‘‘Industry must prepare an action plan to address the challenges,’’ it said.

The warning, delivered to a private meeting of the utility industry’s main trade association, became a call to arms for electricity providers in nearly every corner of the nation.

Three years later, the industry and its fossil-fuel supporters are waging a determined campaign to stop a home-solar insurgency that is rattling the boardrooms of the country’s government-regulated electric monopolies.

Wow, solar has come that far that the Electric companies are fearing them as making them potentially obsolete.  I had no idea when Brian O’Connor signed up and qualified for Solar at his house that he told me that it’s actually going to pay him to have solar panels installed.

In my mind solar went from not to long ago something that rich environmentalists did to feel good about themselves to now a viable financial alternative that makes sense not only for the environment but also for the pocketbook and for the common man.

Electricity Saving Update 19- Energy Saving Tips and How To Get Energy Saving Stuff For Free

In an interview with Energy Advisor Geoff Martin:

What can homeowners do to prep for cold weather?
This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but getting a home energy assessment really does help prepare you for changes in weather. There are almost always things that you can do through the utility programs that will make your home warmer and more comfortable – at a lower cost, too, thanks to available incentives and rebates.

But beyond that, there are a couple things I swear by. I always suggest people check their hot water temperature. Don’t set it above 120 degrees. If your water is any hotter than that, you’re paying more for hot water than you need to. It’s just a little knob on your heater. Carefully lower the dial until your temperature goes down.

Also close your curtains or blinds. It won’t replace an insulation job, but when we use our infrared camera over closed blinds or drawn curtains versus open ones, we do see a reduction in heat loss. Closed heavy window curtains or blinds also make a room more comfortable and slow heat loss.

For those of you who have not taken advantage of the Free Home Energy Assessment that you’re already paying for in the line item “Energy Efficiency Charge” On Your Electric Bill, sign up in this form and you will get a ton of free lightbulbs that use 10 watts of power but replace ones that use 70-100 watts and give great light, also free power strips, and replace old style thermostats with electronically controlled ones as well as water saving green shower heads.

Home Solar Evaluation At Brian O’Connor’s East Gloucester House
As part of our ongoing series since National Grid went up 37% on Elecricity prices we interviewed Kevin Prickett who came out to East Gloucester to do a Home Solar Evaluation. According to the Kevin, not only do you save money, but if your home qualifies, you actually will get back more than you put in. Watch the video to listen to how it works and if you are interested sign up for a Free Evaluation for yourself. The way he explained it is that Deval Patrick signed something into action that calls for National Grid to have a certain percentage of homes using renewable energy by a certain date. If they don’t reach that quota, they will be fined three times the cost to the Government. Currently from what he says there are less than 2% of households taking advantage of the program so there is this huge pool of money available for the smart people who make the call and take advantage. Our goal is to educate our readership and to get as many of us to be inside of that 2% of the smart people who are getting something back for the money they are putting in.

Update: just got a text from Brian O’Connor who just told me that if his house qualifies, not only would he have no electric bill but he would get a check in the mail.
