On Sunday a group of kids gathered on the dock behind the Heritage Center for the adventure of a lifetime! They were taking a 5 day trip on the Spirit of Massachusetts using the ocean as a classroom.
Tall ship sailing involves teamwork, adventure and strength of character. This is the platform off which the kids and crew will explore the sea. This summer Gloucester Museum School Project Adventure Summer Camp is offering four opportunities for campers to embark on a fantastic voyage of discovery!
Thirteen year old Gloucester student Jessica Blazewicz will be writing log entries for the trip and sending them to us to share with our readers. Watch for upcoming posts on this incredible adventure!
Kaos knocks off two-time champs

GLOUCESTER — Following yesterday’s championship seine boat race at Pavilion Beach, Kaos coxswain Joe Novello jumped up on the bow of the boat and yelled, “We’re back.”
Novello and Kaos were the cream of the crop in the seine boat world in the early part of the decade winning titles in 2000 and 2002. Recently, however, Kaos has been close, but hasn’t been able to find a third title, falling on Sunday in five of the last six years. But yesterday the two time champions were truly back, as Kaos outmuscled two-time defending champion Seize the Moment, who was attempting to become the fourth crew in history to win three straight titles. Kaos captured a 1.5-boat win to earn the 2009 men’s seine boat championship. Breakaway (Paul Giacalone’s crew) finished in third….

The kids (and parents!) had a great time on Beach Court. Joey P organized the games and with the help of volunteers, the event was a huge success!

The True Few dueled with On the Rise the entire way out to the flag. It was a back and forth battle with both crews gaining their share of small leads. To top it all off, both crews went into the turn at the same time.
The True Few, however, came away with a slight lead thanks to a slick turn from scuttler Joe Balbo. A few strokes later, The True Few built a boat lead, another 100 yards further, the eventual champions extended their lead to three boats. By the time they hit the beach, The True Few turned the championship race from a deadlock at the halfway mark, to a resounding win of more than five boats by the time the race was finished.
Up until 11:30 yesterday morning Debbie Giacalone Kelly was prepared to coach the crew on to victory. But then she got the call that a rower had injured her arm and could Debbie take her place. Debbie hadn’t rowed in 2 years. Her arm’s been bothering her. But she said “Yes” and the rest is history! The crew celebrated at the Dog Bar in style! What a night!
Congratulations to the Oar’Dacious crew!

Here’s where you catch up on everybody’s life since last Fiesta. The Novello family has a new granddaughter, Julianna. Bob Whynott’s last day as City Clerk is today. All the city officials were there talking about next fall’s possible candidates. Steve Maniacci and Jerry Ciolino are doing great at the “West End Sweets”. And on and on…. Good food, good people!
